Is Toy Story Land really needed?

I doubt that they will add any more thrill rides at HS beyond what they have planned for SW land. ToT and RnR are big draws for the moderate-thrill seekers, which is the level Disney aims to please. Walt wanted a family atmosphere, where parents and children of all ages to participate in experiences together.

They don't need to become Islands of Adventure or Six Flags but it sure would be nice to get 1 or 2 more thrill rides in. Like I've said in many other threads, it's not all about the kids folks.

I agree. Even some rides like Spiderman at WDW would be great. IMHO, Universal has better top tier attractions than WDW but it does lack the immersive atmosphere.

I think that DHS is a unique beast. It needs two completely immersive lands because the park right now is a thematic mess. Its a not-a-studio park that is still themed like a studio. They need to developed themed areas to help define the park and to move away from its original vision. The park used to be where you went to see HOW the movies were made, Disney has since abandoned that theme but the park has never really gotten the overhaul it needs to move away from that early vision. If the parks new focus is about EXPERIENCING the movies, then they have to build immersive environments to properly convey the new theme.

I don't think that Disney will build a new immersive land for every new attraction it builds for here on out, but if DHS is going to move to a more defined footprint in its park, its going to need it.

On the other hand if we get the rumored new attraction in Frontierland, they will not have to build a whole new themed area, because we already have a fleshed out Frontierland. The same thing for the new Frozen ride, they already have the atmosphere and architecture, so they don't have to build a new environment (granted I still think its stupid, but that's a different thread! )

It certainly is needed in HS, currently there aren't enough attractions in HS to appeal to all ages. We're excited, but it's frustrating that these improvements take so long. You'd think a company like Disney could afford to put the rush on. When it take years and years...I'm over Avatar land. Whatever movie they are making to coincide with Avatar land better be good enough to pull my focus. Maybe I just feel that way because my kids never got into that movie? Between my two kids, I've seen the Toy Story movies well over 100 times, the Star Wars movies dozens of times (the relatively non-gory episodes anyway). We are all super excited about both of those expansions. I do wish they would have gone with a more generic land that tied together all the pixar movies, but maybe that's an expansion for the future?

That's not even debatable.
It is debatable, because not everyone is looking for the same things in "top tier attractions". We will just have to agree to disagree. You want thrill rides. Fine. I love thrill rides, but I go to Cedar Point for that. At WDW, I would be happy if they never opened another of their version of a thrill ride. They are far better at themed attractions, so I hope that they continue to invest in that area.

Different strokes.

WDW has only one "thrill" ride - ToT.

"Thrill ride" and "immersive theming" are not mutually exclusive.

I think part of the reason they are creating Toy Story Land is the success of Carsland in DCA. No, it won't have a Radiator Springs Racer (fantastic attraction!), but that area has appeal for its incredible design. You walk in there and you are IN Radiator Springs. I always try to be there at dusk, when they make a show of turning on all the neon lights. So much fun!

Will Toy Story Land have the same feel? If it's done right, it could. We will have to wait and see.

Disney isn't a thrill ride park. Do people expect that? I don't expect Disney to have the same kids of rides as Six Flags and vice versa. They're different.

Honestly, Carsland at DL is beautiful. It's just really REALLY well done. There's one thrill type ride (it certainly isn't a thrill ride by real definitions), a nice kiddie/family ride, two places to eat and a place or two to shop. It doesn't sound impressive, but it really is. We actually spent a decent amount of time there in the evening because it was so nice. Even my Disney-cynic husband really enjoyed it. It was like being IN the movie. I hope Toy Story is done similarly at DHS.

Why do people keep bringing up Six Flags? Once again, please quote someone on the Dis who has said they want Disney to resemble Six Flags. Disney is HUGEEEEEEE. It has many parks around the world which are verrrrrrrry verrrrrrrrrry big. They have enough land to build enough attractions that appeal to all ages. Little girls and boys, tweens, teens, young adults, old adults, and ancient.

Maybe Disney could use more rides geared to older kids (i.e. "Thrill rides") but DHS actually needs more Family rides! The only ride there for younger kids is TSMM. There are some of the shows, but the other rides in the park are RnR, ToT, Star Tours, and Great Movie Ride, which has scary parts and isn't really a "kid's ride." If Slinky-Dog Coaster can be as good as 7DMT, also a "family friendly" coaster, then I'll be very pleased with it.

There are so many people who won't or can't ride thrill rides. I can go to any park and find excellent ones. But I can travel to Disney with my whole family and everyone will enjoy their day. I took my kids, parents and grandfather to Busch gardens. There wasnt a single ride we could all do together. Disney is the only park we've been to where we can stay together 75% or more of the time.

I think hs is lacking for entertainment for the under 40" set, so I'm thrilled with the direction of their renovations. Family rides is a huge part of what sets Disney apart for us

Would you feel better if I brought up Cedar Point or Busch Gardens? It's the same sort of comparison, but feel free to insert whichever park it makes you happier to compare to in that equation.

The point I'm making, and that you're missing, is this; Disney is seeking to do something different. You don't have to like it, but if you've visited those other theme parks, you obviously see the difference between the rides at Disney and <theme park of your choice here>. We spent summers going to Cedar Point. Cedar Point has some AMAZING rides. Seriously. They're great, but they're not the rides at Disney. The attention to detail and immersion into theme just isn't there. I think they're doing better with this at Universal because they have to if they want to compete.

The truth is, Disney already has rides and attractions that DO appeal to all of the age categories you pointed out. Maybe they're not the rides YOU want, but that doesn't mean they don't have things to do for all age groups. If they didn't people wouldn't go. However, the people who go around the country riding the best roller coasters aren't going to Disney because that's not what Disney does.

Nope. People expect Disney to provide what they've been providing for the last six decades: rides for everyone. Yep, this means gentle rides that the smallest child or biggest chicken can ride. This also means rides that offer a little thrill, hence the popularity of Space Mountain, Splash Mountain, Big Thunder, Tower of Terror, Rock 'n' Roller Coaster, Test Track, and Expedition Everest. Disney isn't about no thrills or all thrills, it's about theming, which can be done to any type of ride.

I don't expect Disney to have the same kids of rides as Six Flags and vice versa. They're different.
No one has asked them to. Whenever anyone even mentions the mere possibility of a thrill ride, people suddenly extrapolate that to mean a high-intensity, coaster-centric park like Magic Mountain or Cedar Point, despite no one ever suggesting this.

Universal is basically the same as Disney. They have rides which appeal to all ages, like Disney, but have destroyed Disney when it comes to thrill rides.

I'd be thrilled with 3-4 years. They announced Pandora in 2011 and right now 2017 is the most optimistic prediction for opening.

And you might not care about the gift sops and restaurants, but I have a hunch Disney does.

If you research carsland, which everyone raves about, announced in 2007, opened in 2012.
And concept art was 2006.
