Hoping to stay at the POLY, but if it doesn't ork out, and we have to make a trek to the Poly instead, is it worth the effort to go for the "Tonga toast"?

Thanks

Yes and get the macadamia pineapple pancakes and the pressed pot coffee too! We make sure to go there for breakfast on every trip

Dh and I decided against the Tonga Toast in October(our first trip to Kona)...I thought it was too heavy, he wanted the Macadamia Nut pancakes(he loved them, I thought them good...not great).
I'd say that b/c its such a popular item its one of those things you should try once. Maybe even share it...its darn big and rich enough to share.

Also....let it be known(cause some don't) that you can get the same thing at Capt. Cooks in the Poly..so its quicker(and cheaper..served without the meat). And also...you can get it at Boatwright's at POR...its not called Tonga Toast, but its the same thing and its served with strawberry sauce.

What exactly is Tonga Toast? Is it like french toast? Is it stuffed with anything? Just curious...I hear a lot of great things about it:goodvibes

It is deep fried french toast stuffed with bananas  YUMMO.

We always spilt it. I feel that it tends to be too much if you try to eat it all by yourself.

I'm sure that I have seen a picture of it here on the boards.

I LOVED the pressed coffee and would go just for that. I had the Tonga Toast for the first time last year and I didn't think it lived up to the hype. It was VERY greasy and I LOVE GREASE. I agree with mickeymousemom though and I think you should try it yourself. Maybe it was so hyped up that it left me disappointed.

I felt that way about te Illuminations cruise. TOO hyoed. I guess I'll have to try it for myself!

I can't help too much - because I have never had it. But I will say I hope it is good, because we have a reservation there for May 5th. I've heard it's good from many people on here, although overly sweet. That's okay... I LIKE overly sweet :rotfl:

I made the trip to try it last year, I was unimpressed. No plans to try it again in the near future.

While I wouldn't make the trip specifically for Tonga toast, I would for the other excellent breakfast selections at Kona. I thought that the TT was heavy and greasy and I didn't really care for the banana either. But I loved the Big Kahuna breakfast.

I say you have to try it once!

i agree - make the pilgrimage and go have it once!

it's really something - artery clogging perfection!

(try to share it if you can - it's quite filling!)

Plan your breakfast there for a day that you'll be going to the MK, this way you won't be exactly making a special trip just for breakfast. :)

My DH loves the Tonga Toast while I love the Pineapple Macadamia nut pancakes. We both love the 100% Kona coffee press pot! :thumbsup2

But to answer your question, YES I think it's worth a trip to have breakfast at the Kona Cafe :sunny:

Just back from the Poly and had to try the TT after reading so much about it. Had it for breakfast at Capt Cooks. OK, so I have tried it, won't order again. It is huge and was soooo sweet with the cinnamon/sugar coating. (at least that's what we thought it was) even my kids took one bite and wouldn't eat any more.

it is very good - very rich and VERY sweet. I think the pressed pot coffee is enough to make the trip - add the tonga toast to that and well - heaven (but not for my thighs) ;)

I thought it was yummy. My suggestion is to try it without syrup first. It is very sweet and, in my opinion, does not need the syrup they serve with it.

The Kona pressed pot was also a great compliment to balance the sweetness :coffee:

I'm looking forward to eating those macademia nut pancakes more. I'm nervous about the filling of the tonga toast, is it custardy?

No, not that I know of. It is basically a very thick slice of "Texas" toast type bread stuffed with banana slices and dipped in an egg something or other, then deep fried and smothered in cinnamon sugar. Not anything I would be interested in, but many love it. Overall, I just wasn't impressed with the breakfast at Kona. I had the eggs benedict and it was a bit dry and the english muffin tasted stale. The atmosphere just wasn't great....but we did get a pressed pot of Kona coffee and it was amazing!

If you want the macadamia nut pancakes, then head to Kona. Otherwise, you could stop at the Poly long enough to run into Capt. Cooks for some Tonga Toast for $4.49. It 's hard for us to predict what YOU will like, and you may become a lover of Kona!:)

There's no custard inside the Tonga Toast, it only looks like that because it's the fresh banana that's been cooked inside. It's actually quite a nice contract to the sweet, deep fried outside. :)

I also don't think it's need ANY maple syrup at all; my DH just digs into it as is. :cool2:
