Is this worth returning?

About a year ago I was exchanging a water gun that I brought for my son at Walmart. The line was not long at all, and the single girl working the counter was very efficient. In front of me was a men that had something wrapped inside a Walmart bag. When he approached the counter he proceeded to take out an OPEN cereal box and complained that the “free” toy that was suppose to be inside the box was NOT there! The girl ended up giving him a new box of cereal. So ya I could imagine someone returning something like erasers and a notebook.

I may be that person returning items not needed even though it's just small change - theoretically speaking. I quit work at the end of the school year for a variety of reasons, but primarily to put my family first. My husband earns a decent living, but he is commission based, so our income can be a little unstable during the summertime. That has been the case this summer and you better believe I count every penny spent at the grocery store. At the moment we are between checks and school has just started so there are a multitude of school-related expenses that my 3 children have (p.e. shorts, agendas, viola strings, field trip, etc). Just this past week I went to the grocery store for a few odds and ends for meals and the kids lunches and I was working hard to keep my bill at 20 dollars - that's how conservative we need to be at the moment. I came out at $20.37!! So, I can relate to that person returning a couple of items that seems insignificant to some of you. I'm finding that we (meaning my family) can be extremely wasteful when money is not tight. My goal is to be as conservative as I am now even after my husband gets his commission next week which will be considerable (Yeah!).

Oh and BTW - we live in a fairly affluent planned community so we don't "look" like the impoverished family that people might assume would return items for a buck or two - we're just the conservative, make-every-penny-count family at the moment.

For some people it's a social thing. Maybe they're lonely and looking for some interaction. I used to work in a bank and this man would come in and withdraw some weird amount, like $15.75. Then he'd be back a couple of days later to deposit $5.75. He was a widower and I think he liked coming to visit the ladies.

I would not return anything that small - heck, I'm sitting on some pricey stuff that I don't feel like returning right now and I'm waiting until I'm going in that direction.
