Is this typical for an ob/gyn (office procedure)?

DS' orthopedic surgeon did this one time and it was frustrating. Come to find out, he was driving to work and passed a very bad accident and stayed there to help.

Think of it this way, if it was YOU on the operating table would you want him to step outside, call the office, make arrangements, have to rescrub and then come back and finish??

I guess I don't see that the office did anything wrong either. They probably had an estimated time of 1-2 hours and when that went by, they rescheduled. I would certainly want my DR to drop everything for me if need be. I had one OB appointment like this when I was pregnant with our twins. It was going to be our first "real" ultrasound (had one early on to "diagnose" twins but all that we saw on that were two blobs :lmao:). They had called the house but I had already left. When I got to the office they said it might be an hour or more. I decided to wait for a while to get a better update (a hour would have given me about enough time to go back home, sit for 15 minutes, turn around and go back). After and hour they said that she had finished and would be there in about 30 minutes so I decided to wait. Had it just been a "regular" check up I would have rescheduled.

If he is in a difficult surgery on myself or my DD or Sister I want him to have his entire mind focused on the procedure he is doing not drifting off to think about having someone calling his office!!!!

If the surgery is going bad or she is crashing on the unit you don't think about anything but the situation at hand. I have been involved in crisises when I worked that 6 or 8 hours later you realize you never went to the bathroom all shift or anything else. You get into like a bubble and the world outside that patient fails to exist.

Specialists are not a dime a dozen there aren't a lot of them and they don't tend to be dealing with things that can be done with half the brain focused on the surgery and the other half thinking of his office or the grocery list.

It happens a lot with specialists and the more prone to emergency calls their specialty is the more it will happen.

I can easily believe there could be no communication with the office.

My sister's section turned into an 8 hour fiasco. I agree entirely.

Having been preganant 4 times, with the last pregnancy being higher-risk, I've spend many, many hours waiting in my OB's office. An hour wait was normal, and I brought a book. It was all worth it when I went in for my 37 week appointment, pregnant with twins, and she told me to go to the hospital, and she cancelled all of her afternoon appointments, so she could due my c/s herelf, instead of the attending.

Maybe I wasn't very clear in my original post (been a long week, sorry...). I don't think either the dr or the office did anything wrong, I just wondered if this was typical procedure. I can't imagine being the office staff trying to reschedule all those women, either! I was able to get in after work for the rescheduled appt, so won't have to take another day off.

I'm no good at multiple replies, but I know what it's like to get connected to a tv show Imzadi, that's rough.

And thank you momof1princess for your prayers for my DGM Marie. She's ready to go and join her DH who passed ten years ago next week....

Of course, then there's the time, just as I was leaving to go to my OB/Gyn appointment, that her office called to cancel my appointment because *SHE* was having a baby!

I had that happen with and endocrinologist but not my OB :lmao:.

Yeah, after the surgery went over the first hour, his office manager should have probably rescheduled everyone. I've been on both sides of the fence. I've had to sit and wait while my doctor took care of an emergency. And one time I *was* the emergency--5hours worth, at that. I like to think that the people in his waiting room weren't too upset about it. OB/GYNs are specialists and anything goes in a specialty office.

Not knowing if it was a serious surgery - or one that could "suddenly" turn serious - I would have just asked to be rescheduled..

He sounds like a good doctor - thorough and mindful of your needs - so I would stick with him..:goodvibes

I'm trying to stay positive, because I really liked him at the first two appts, but I am finding it hard to believe that there would be *no* communication between him/the hospital and the clinic about whether or not he would be returning. Even if he couldn't pick up a phone, couldn't he tell someone else to? Or is that just part and parcel of being a specialist? Sigh...

Terri

Maybe it was and emergency and he couldn't get free...I would certainly hope that if I had an any type of emergency where my Dr. had to drop everything and rush to meet me at the hospital, he'd not be making phone calls.

I think the office was being very accomodating by trying to fit you in if he came back.
