Is this true about Mission: Space or just a rumor?

Was told the other day by someone that they were watching the Travel Channel & they said that Mission: Space was going to close & they were going to invesitage why so many people were getting sick after riding it.

Has anyone else heard this? With all the disclaimers they put in writing & that they announce I find this hard to believe.

Could it be true?

I would be Very Surprised if this were anything other than a Rumor. Disney has spent way too much on the ride - and even more on advertising for the ride - to even think about temporarily closing it!

One thing of note though - they have added "Barf Bags" right inside the ride! When they opened last Sept, they were not there - but now they are!

I did notice these. When I rode in October & November they were not there, but this past April they were in plain site!!!

Probably just a rumor... there's nothing to really investigate on why people get sick, it's known WHY, I'm not sure what they would do further to figure it out ;)

That doesn't sound like anything the Travel Channel would broadcast... they are really more of a publicity vehicle than a news organization.

Rumor only... and it ignores some key facts...
Hundreds of thousands of guests have ridden M:S since its opening last year.
5 people have gone to the hospital after riding M:S.
They were all over the age of 55.
Most had already had heart surgery or had a history of heart problems.
There are 13 warning signs and multiple audio warnings that tell you not to ride if you have any heart, back, or neck conditions, or experience motion sickness, etc.

Oh, man, I hope not. I haven't ridden it yet!!!

Isn't it fairly obvious why people get sick on it? It's an intense experience inside a simulator. I got sick on that Design Your Own Rollercoaster simulator on DisneyQuest and it was no great mystery to me.

Some people refuse to heed the warnings and then blame the attraction. Jeez....

Mission Space is a centrifuge that spins over 35 mph- 40mph.

I saw it on travel channel a month ago. This is the ONLY time i ever heard about this (if i didn't i would have went on) - i read EVERY travel guide out there - went to every library + and they never mention that fact.

I would never sit and spin at 35mph in a tight circle or whatever- that would make my head dizzy & screwed up---

I just wanted to pass it on...::yes::

It is not in a tight circle if you are thinking the individual capsule spins, No it is the entire wheel of several capsules that spins as all the capsules face the center of the ride. Disney magazine did an extensive article on the ride and the development with NASA engineers etc, long before the ride was open. So I would not say they don't want you to know it.
It is still a very dangerous ride as far as anyone with medical problems is concerned. But you can't say they don't warn you.

I do not have any of the symptoms on any of these signs. I am healthy and under the age of 55. I enjoy roller coasters, TOT and the other rides, BUT.... this ride made me so sick for almost 8 hours I couldn't function. I followed the directions. I faced forward the entire duration of the ride. I even managed to push my button when I was instructed to, and there were only 2 of us in our cabin that could. One a child could not, and appeared very sick as well as my friend another person my age.

Please try to remember that certain things affect people differently. I am going to try this again in June, just to see if I was having an off day. I have seen this posted many times before, People trying to place blame, because they were not affected by this ride, Thinking that all of us must have been looking where we shouldn't have been or that we are all geriatric nursing home patients having one of the many symptoms it mentions in the warning signs.

Please remember not everyone's bodies function the same. I am sure there were a number of wannabe astronauts that don't make it for this very reason.

smiles Patty

You would have known once you got to the ride. In the preshow video, they show a dramatization of the ride capsules spinning around the room on a centrifuge.

I remember this because I wasn't aware it actually spun, until I saw the video.

So if people pay attention to the video, they will know that they will be spinning  !

I had to smile at the idea that Disney would have to spend time investigating WHY some people get sick on the ride! LOL, it is a great big spinning ride! :p

Personally I felt much sicker after going on the Teacups than I did after riding Mission: Space. I think the Mission: Space preshow does a pretty good job of letting people know what they're getting into; I hope most people who are prone to motion-sickness do the smart thing and just skip rides like Teacups and Mission: Space!
