OP there IS a solution. Since it seems packing trash is very common, why don't you just put all that stuff in a trashbag, maybe they'll just throw it in a box without looking at it

Make sure they don't pack any candles!! If it gets too warm, the candles start melting and get over everything.

We're moving from NH to VA. DH took a new job and is already down there. I am up here getting the house ready to sell by myself and then will have to do the packing. Major stress!!

I guess I didn't realize that moving companies can actually pack your boxes for you too! Would anyone be able to give me a ballpark figure? DH's new company will pay up to 25K in relocation fees, so would you recommend I go this route?

I think it would be cool. throw a little "Moving and cant take it" party. I mean my grandmother did this about 4 years ago when she relized she had TOO many paul mitchell products. I was in heaven. With the eccomony the way it is you could be pontentally helping many of your freinds.

I have no idea how much it runs, but it IS nice to have them pack for you! My DH was military so they paid. You can always ask for an estimate. Out of 8 packings we only had one thing go "missing". I just can't remember what it was. Now it's gonna bug me all night!

I think that is all insurance/haz mat stuff. They told us what they couldn't pack/move and we packed it up ourselves and wrote things that started with "Grandma's" on it (e.g. "Grandma's pans" - cleaning supplies for the kitchen.) That way, we had some idea what was actually in there.

They'll move the boxes you pack yourself, they just won't insure them. At least that's how ours went.

They WILL, however, pack your trash (really try to avoid that), and your fridge/appliances with anything left over inside. If you're not getting your stuff for a few weeks (or months) it can really be a smelly surprise to open.

Trash AND dirty dishes. Yummo.

Brother was just out of college after air force rotc, going off to his training. He and his wife were newly married (brother was commissioned, graduated, and married all in one month), he went off to bootcamp and she was in charge of the Air Force-paid move.

She didn't know about trash and dishes. She left while they packed, and when she came back the trash and dishes from the sink were gone. And so was that truck.

Took a few days to get to San Antonio (in late June, early July), took a bit longer to get into the apartment to have stuff delivered, and by the time she was ready to unpack, eeeeeewwwwww those boxes were really nasty.

They've since been moved 2 more times, by private companies, and they've never made that mistake again!

They can't take the risk that what they deem garbage you deem as, um, not garbage. Now why they don't just leave it on the counter I don't know, but I guess to them, packing it ALL is safer than picking and choosing.

We've had 8 military moves (with packers). I always go through my bathroom cabinets, kitchen cabinets, and linen closet before the movers come. I tape the lids closed and put the bottles of shampoo, vinegar, nail polish (don't tape those), etc. into large zip loc bags. Movers always to take them.

Weird stuff I had to convince them to take...

Jar-type Yankee Candles because they are "flammable"...um, sure, if you hold a match to them. If that is the threshold, so is my couch, my clothes, and that filing cabinet over there.

A single, solitary brick I pried from the street in the town where I went to college - because they couldn't move "building material". Umm, what am I going to build with a brick?

Since we always move completely across the county and spend at least a month homeless, I always empty one closet in the house, then fill it with everything we will need for the road trip (clothes, cooler, paperwork, dog kennel, etc.), close the closet door and cover it with "do not pack: signs.

He told us that he esitimated with everything it would cost our 3300 sq ft 5 bed 3 bath about $10,000 for everything including needed storage. that was a rough ballpark though

Yes I would call around and get estimates it should MORE than cover your move including packing.

One question tho - that $25,000 in relocation fees, does that include realtor fees to sell your current house or is that separate or not covered at all?

It must have to do with restricted items (US interstate regulations)... Imove.com provides lists of moving companies and other tools for your upcoming move, like moving tips and moving supplies. This moving tips section talks about some of the generally restricted items.

I would pack the items and move them myself - if you don't want to give them away or risk getting into trouble.

In England, they packed the can that we dumped our ashtrays into. I had set the can off to one side so it would not be packed and next thing it was gone. Thankfully we were moving from one house in England to another and not back to the US.

On top of that, I had a tall dresser with 7 drawers. They brought it downstairs and then to put it in the truck, since they did not have a ramp, they proceeded to lift it straight up while it was standing straight up. Needless to say the drawers started to fall out of the dresser, since they had not taken them out. The top three drawers fell out and two were damaged to the extent that they could be used, but had pieces missing from them. The third drawer has a crack in it. This was in 1989. I could not believe that they didn't take the drawers out or at least secure them with tape or something.
