Is this the new protocol on Ebay?

This is a huge pet peeve of mine as well. I pay within HOURS of the close of Auction with paypal. As soon as I receive my item I was leaving feedback - but not getting it back from some for days, weeks and sometimes not at all.

NOW - When I receive my item I email the seller to say that I have receved it. I mention that in the past even though I have always be a prompt and understanding buyer, many people have not left feedback for me even after I have left positive - so I tell them that I am pleased etc with their auction and I intend to leave positive feedback after they have left it for me since I completed my part of the transaction first. If they do not like my terms then they can feel free to not post any feedback at all and I will do the same.

So what about the buyer. How do they know you aren't a whacko? If you are a legitimate seller, you may not agree with me but oh well. What is the difference?

eta: I didn't mean this to sound so snippy! But can't help but feel either side has the same argument.

Ebay is a system of trust. I have to trust that the buyers are legitimate, the buyer has to trust that I am a legitimate seller. If they don't like something in my policies they shouldn't bid.

If I get goofy questions from people I will not hesitate to block them from bidding on my stuff. There are some people I just will not deal with.

Well, that I understand!

But it does seem to me that you are asking more trust from others than you are willing to give.

I've sold all of 2 things on ebay, and they went fine. Now I've purchased waaaay too much, and been ripped off 3 times. So, I am biased in my opinion. Do you actually state that you don't leave feedback until you get it? If you don't mind my asking.

All of this makes me not want to use ebay. No way will I leave feedback for the seller before they leave feedback for me. And if I get burned as a seller leaving honest feedback for someone who has payed me, so be it. I'm a great believer in karma and what goes around comes around.

I wait until the buyer leaves FB so I know that they received the item and are happy with it. AFAIC, the transaction is not done until then. I also have two accounts, one for buying and one for selling. If I feel a need to leave a negative as a buyer my seller account will not be burnt by a retalitory negative.

Yep because I've been burned. I won't put myself in that position again. :)

Everyone can say this. I've been burned on FB, I have never left a negative for anyone. I have left FB and never received it too. So, I guess I should just not leave FB at all.

That's up to you. You're not required to leave feedback, neither am I.

As a seller I leave feedback once feedback has been left for me. Recieving feedback indicates to me that the buyer received their package safely and was satisfied with the purchase.

::yes::

That way if there is a dispute it is resolved before any feedback is left. If I leave FB as soon as the package leaves my hands there is no guarantee that the transaction will complete with the same manner in which it started. I don't have a problem leaving FB 1st IF I know the buyer has received the item and is satisfied with the transaction - if they are not happy then I have an opportunity to resolve that issue. Whenever I have purchased an item from EBay I always email the person when I receive it so they know I got it, then the next time I am on ebay I leave FB.

In the past month or so I had the same complaint. Bottom line is I no longer buy anything on ebay.

Aw, you didn't sound snippy and really that is a legitimate question. Problem is you do not know if someone is a nutjob or not. The best a buyer can do is to not just look at the feedback scroe but go to the feedback page and READ some of the comments.

Personally I look for comments where people have said the seller communicated well with them. To me that says a lot - it speaks for their customer service and shows they make the effort to keep their buyers informed.

IMO the whole issue centers around the increase in folks who think they can receive an item in it's advertised condition and get a partial or full refund if they complain. If the seller has left feedback the game is to say they will leave negative feedback if they don't get what they want, and in these cases, they don't deserve a dime.

As a seller I leave feedback when the transaction has been completed. To me that means the item has been paid for (and payment has cleared), the item has been shipped, received (verified via DC), and the buyer lets me know that they are satisfied with the item - via feedback or email (the method of contact doesn't really matter to me)..

I've been conducting my eBay transactions in that manner for years and have never had any problems or any complaints..

When purchasing, I assume the seller I am dealing with will handle the transaction in the same manner and that's perfectly fine with me.. :)

I leave feedback once a month. So, in my case, I may not get to someone for a few weeks. What I find really annoying is the person that emails me 2-3 times looking for feedback. Maybe I'm in the minority here, but it's just not that important to me. Maybe, I have a high enough number that is why I just don't care anymore.

But at some point, when you were getting started, it did matter, I'm sure. Perhaps, they too, would like to have the same advantage you wanted.

As a seller, as soon as payment is received, shouldn’t one at that point leave feedback? I’ve bought and sold a few things on ebay over the last month, and when I sold something, I immediately left feedback when payment was submitted (either by paypal or money order). However, I noticed the things I bought have not received feedback until I left feedback for the seller. That seems so unethical to me. I understand the seller is doing that in order to save themselves if I were to leave them negative feedback, but the two transactions should be separate and apart. My feedback for them should have nothing to do with their feedback for me.

Those of you who ebay often, how do you feel about it? I’m tempted to not leave any feedback for the seller. That just annoys me.

When I buy, I always leave feedback as soon as I receive the item, I do not expect the seller to leave me feedback until I have done this.

When I sell, I always wait until the buyer leaves me feedback so I know they are satisfied. I don't know how this could be considered unethical? I'm not holding it hostage, I'm just protecting my feedback from unjust negative marks.

If you are happy with the item and the transaction was completed as promised, I'm not sure why you wouldn't leave feedback?

I have been a buyer on ebay since 1996 or so and it used to be that the seller would leave feedback as soon as payment was received. In many cases, that was how they communicated with the buyer to let them know that payment was received. In the past two years or so, it has turned so now the seller doesn't want to leave feedback until the buyer does. I guess I am still from the old school and feel the seller should leave FB once payment is received.

Because I have completed my part of the bargain by paying them, and I should be left feedback first. I don't agree that as a buyer my obligation is to be satisfied with the item. My obligation is to pay for the item.

I agree. Holding feedback until the buyer leaves it feels like extortion.

In a perfect world there wouldn't be an option for the feedback to be posted until it had went through some third party screening process, but that is not an option here. Given that, I have no problem with people handling it the way the system works, and right now, that means not posting any feedback until you have a good idea how the whole transaction went.

IMO as the seller you need to know if the buyer is on the level as far as being honest about what they received before you can give accurate feedback. And that's the problem these days, dishonest buyers.
