Is this the end??

There really hasn't been any data or consensus on whether "Global Warming" has anything to do with the intensity of hurricanes. And there has been no consensus that these hurricanes are out of the normal hurricane cycle.

Maybe I am mistaken on my understanding on how hurricanes work, but 1 degree isn't going to amount to much at all.

Ted

From what I understand, warm water fuels the hurricanes. That is why both Rta and Katrina gained speed and intensity once they crossed into the gulf. If Global Warming is heating up the oceans, hurricanes get stronger. Now as to why there are more hurricanes, I wasn't blaming that on global warming.

No, it's not the end of the world. We just had a calm period of about 40 years when not many natural disasters happened. Hurricanes go in 40-60 year cycles of bad seasons, and we are entering a bad cycle now.

I'm not flaming the OP, all this bad news is enough to make one stop and think. But, unfortunatly bad things happen to good people, and we are just entering a more busy time of "bad things" than we've had in the recent past.

Nope no end....just seeing the effects of global warming, which is a documented FACT that is completely ignored.

Yes I felt the same way during the tsunami. Okay so I can verify that I am a paranoid chicken who hates to see or hear of disasters. I was a wreck after 9/11 esp living in NYC. Thanks for the hugs and those who made light of my feelings, shame on you.
I'm not trying to make fun. I'm jsut saying that I if it is the end, I'm ready to go. I'm confident in where I'll end up. But I'm not going to live my life wondering if each time something bad happens if it's "The End." To me that's not living, because horrible things happen every day all over the world.

Using capitalization does not make it true. You need to cite real sources.

There is not enough data right now to prove whether the recent hurricanes are a product of the natural cycle or a result of any temperature increases inthe Gulf or the Atlantic.

I have seen a couple press releases for studies released by Georgia Tech and MIT that claim to "prove" that there has been an increase due to "Global Warming". But none of these studies look at the active period that occured for many years before 1970.

The main problem is that many places that study climate changes or "Global Warming" stand a better chance at maintaining or increasing their funding if they have a sensational story to keep them in the limelight.

I am not denying that all that man has been doing is having an affect on the environment, I am just saying that we need to be careful when jumping onto bandwagons. Make sure the driver is driving the wagon for the right reasons.

There is no way to know for sure.
However - I personally do not think that all the horrible things that have been happening are new nor do they predict the coming of the end of the world.
These horrible things have been occurring for years and years. We just know more about all of the global problems now because of communication technology that was not present in the past.

No one is making light of your feelings. But you'd have to admit your thread title and OP is a little overly dramatic. I think that's what people are playing off. There've always been disasters throughout history and there will continue to be disasters. It's called life.

Well, crabmeal, we're always getting closer--same way that each day we are always creaeping closer to our own death or the same way when you get in the car & drive down the road you are always closer to your destination.
We won't know when the end will come but there are signs and we are to be a ware of those signs. Most importantly, we are to make sure our souls are ready-- our own end may come sooner than we think or we could possibly see the world as we know it come to an end. It is all about choices and beliefs. Try not to live in fear of the end of life. Try to live life to the fullest and touch other while your journeying through.

Hope your family feels better soon. :)

I don't think so, but if I'm wrong, there is nothing I can do to stop it. :sunny:

On the subject of global warming and hurricanes:

http://www.cnn.com/2005/TECH/science/09/23/hurricane.cycle/index.html

Interesting article that explains things fairly well. Bottom line, we've got an entire generation that has grown up in a period of very low hurricane activity and strength, so this appears to be coming out of nowhere. In fact, it's quite consistent with observed weather patterns in the Atlantic.

Life goes on.

Just wanted to assure you I wasn't making light of your feelings. I tend to try not to think about things like the world ending..I want to LIVE life not worry about it ending. I also like to comfort myself with humor..it keeps me sane.

From all that I've read, my personal opinion is this. Either man IS causing global warming, OR the earth is warming on it's own, but man is adding to it and making it worse (like if your house is on fire and you add gasoline).

Even if gobal warming is a total myth, all the polution we cause still isn't a good thing, we are poisoning the Earth no matter how you look at it.

All that said, I personally don't feel that man has caused the upswing in huricanes. It certainly hasn't helped, but I don't think it is a direct cause.

A few natural disasters hit the US and you think it's the end of the world??!! Do you think the world ends at the borders of America? Take a look around, what's happened there is miniscule in comparison to what's happened in other parts of the world.

There has always been natural disasters and suffering. These are not the first major hurricanes, that was not the first tsunami, and 9/11 was not the first terrorist act in the world. Some of these things are just hitting a little closer to home. I think as history passes, disasters seem to be "worse" to us for a number of reasons. Media saturation has grown (for example, there are 20 news channels you can watch this stuff on 24 hours a day whereas 40 years ago you just had a few networks.) The internet gives us access to discuss these things and read articles about them with the click of a mouse. As cities become larger, population more dense, and properties more valuable, etc, there is more to lose.

I don't necessarily believe this stuff indicates the end of the world. Yes, there will be signs, but I think they will be very out of the ordinary things. As tough as it is to think about, hurricanes are ordinary things, but the intensity and frequency of them tends to be cyclical, and many of us were not living during the last cycle, and if we were, we were not aware as much of the devestation due to the fact we did not have the same technology we do today.

And to answer the questions on whether there will be signs or if no one will know when the end of the world is, based on my Christian faith I believe it is both. I believe there will be signs to tell us it is near. But I don't believe we will be able to pinpoint to a day, a month, or even a year. I don't expect anyone that does not have the same religious beliefs I do to agree with me however, this is just my opinion.

No, I don't. Regardless of the world ending or dying because a frozen chunk of airliner toilet goodies fell on my head...it could all end tomorrow. Best to just live your life for the day and never take for granted what you've got!
