Is This Still Being Done?

We had to cover our textbooks in grammar school. Most of used brown paper supermarket bags. A few hoity-toity ones had fancy covers from a store.

Once I was really embarrassed because my mother covered a book with the A&P logo showing!!!. :scared1:

Or did textbooks go the way of the dinosaurs? 🦕 🦖

When I was in school (1962-1975) we did because the school expected the textbooks to last 10 years or more.
When my youngest was in High School (2005-2009) they didn't because publishers put out new editions every year or two and the schools just budgeted to replace the book that often.
Now, I can see with online books it wouldn't be necessary.

Wrapping books with inside out paper bags is a lost art, we had A&P paper too.

My kids had microfiber wraps from the dollar store, they didn't see the beauty in the potential of a scibled bubble letter x + y = 4ever on the inside cover.

My kids don't have any text books. Everything is on Ipads. Makes the backpack a whole lot easier than the one I carried as a kid lol

Haha. My son's 8th grade science class just started using their textbooks in the 2nd half of the last semester. Students were asked to take their books home and put covers on them and most of the class had no idea what the teacher was talking about. My son found a YouTube video. There is a YouTube video for everything.

We used paper bags or paper based purchased book covers. When my children were young they had those stretchy cloth like ones. Now if anyone is still carrying books they are in a backpack so I can’t see what is common today!

I remember doing it with my kids early in their school years. Was surprised I remembered how! Later they got the fabric ones, which I wasn’t a big fan of, as they seemed to slide around a lot.

When I think of the text books I used to carry around in grade school, in a “school bag” (which was a heavy canvas and vinyl sack with a thick string pulled through the top and very awkward to carry over your shoulder), and later by hand (never had a back pack), it amazes me how practically everything is online now. The text books I carried in nursing school nearly broke my back. My friend and I spent hours in the library with stacks of books xeroxing pages and pages of information, so crazy when you think about it!

Up to a few years back, my kids were still required to cover their textbooks with paper. They all had to be done within the first week of school. Some teachers even gave 5 extra marks if students had them covered within that timeframe. For some reason, book socks were not allowed. I could never understand that. I still have rolls of brown Kraft paper in my closet to avoid having to scramble for it at the beginning of the school year.

We never had bags, never saw a backpack except when the guys played Army.

In high school, we used to carry all our books binders, homework under one arm pressed against our side. Grammar school, stayed in the same room, no moving around. But still no bags or backpacks for going home.

Loved seeing this picture - brings back memories of my school days.

My DD18 does still use some textbooks, but she doesn’t cover them anymore. When she did cover them they were cloth from somewhere like Target.

We were never required to use book covers of any kind. DH said he wasn't either. Our adult DS had some teachers who required them & some who didn't. FWIW, this was in public school. I know many of you posting went to private school.

I only carried the book I needed for the next class. I would drop it off at my locker and pick up the book for the next class during the 10 minute passing period.
I did use grocery bags sometimes, but all the retailers gave away book covers. Tower Records, all the Department Stores and all the radio stations.

No they are all digital now with iPads and Chromebooks. Do miss those days though. In HS, they started to come out with the designer textbook covers vs. the old diyer brown bag special.

We could only go to our lockers at lunch and end of the day. And one way traffic in the hallways all day.
