Is This Something New?

I just read a rental offer on the Rent Board and the member stated that MS would send the confirmation directly to the renter. Is this something new? I thought MS would only deal with the members, never renters. If I am wrong and MS has always done this, I apologize for asking, but my curiousity was piqued.

TIA

MS will only send the confirmation to the owner. I don't go to the R/T board often. There sure are a LOT of folks there with VERY low post counts.

MS will have DME documents sent directly to guests/renters, but the confirmation still goes to the member.

Re-read the post and it stated, "...member services will send the confirmation directly to you." This rental was for a lot of points and the poster had "0" posts (in addition, the money was due via certified check within 10 days of the res being made). Just wondered if MS had changed procedures.

Danger, Will Robinson! DANGER!

Sounds like something might not be kosher there. I'm not saying this is a fraud situation, but it sure seems like there are enough warning signs to set off my detector. Kudos to you for asking.

Unless you are trying to get a short notice reservation, there is no need for a certified check. If your check doesn't clear, the owner can just cancel the reservation.

Now if you are trying to get a reservation that is 60 days or less from now, I don't blame the owner one bit for wanting assurance that he/she will be paid.

As I hope you already know, the owner retains complete control of the DVC reservation until you check in. He/She is the only one who can make changes, add the Dining Plan, Magical Express or room requests. He/She also has the ability to cancel the reservation completely, even though you have paid for the reservation.

But that said, out of the thousands and thousands and thousands of rental transactions completed via the DIS, less than a handful have reported fraud.

Most problems occur when either the owner or the prospective renter are new to renting and really don't quite know what they are doing. A low post count makes this a possibility. Good to see that you are doing your homework before blithely sending off your trust and money.

If you haven't already, ask lots of questions and make sure you are comfortable with this person before you send money. Ask for something in writing that describes the terms - that won't necessarily protect you from fraud, but it will absolutely help to make sure both parties are "on the same page". Be sure you understand the owner's policy on changes and cancellations. They vary between owners. Most will consider the transaction to be non-refundable.

Good luck - renting can be a tremendous bargain in the right circumstances.

I had a CM ask me recently if it was okay to send the confirmation to the person I was making the reservation for (my son). I said cetainly all the while suspecting that it would come to me which it did.

CarolMN, I am not renting, just perusing the posts and I saw this one. I have made ressies for others in the past (been member since 1992) and have never had MS send anyone but myself (the member) the confirmation. I just wondered if the policy had changed, which per Doc's post, it has not.

I did not use the "f" word, just wondered if the policy had changed. However, I hope no one sends a certified check before they receive any paperwork.

Thanks.

Okay -- I had to look. I would run far, far away from that listing. Just joined on 4/30 with 0 posts and misspelled what his occupation is...hmm.

hummm 0 posts, joined in May, hasn't responded to the 3 DISers who have asked questions and not just said they sent a PM AND requires payment in certified cheque only?

sound fishy to me.:scared1: :scared1: :scared1:

i just gave my parents a vacation through dvc and everything goes to me.so only dvc members will get the mail than you have to pass it on

The OP has now edited the post to read that the confirmation will come to the member, not the renter. However, he still wants payment in 10 days by certified check. JMHO, but I don't believe enough renters read the caveat emptor FAQ's that Doc has so graciously provided.
