Is this saveable? If not, what should I buy?

I am sure this is asked 100 times a day, but hey, I'm new to the photo boards. Give a girl a break. ;)
We had a Canon S1 IS. It was 5 years old and a few weeks ago I was taking a pic and the viewer just went black with jagged lines through it. Not sure what this means. :confused3Turned off, back on several times. Took out batteries. Nothing worked. I am assuming its just dead with no resurrection. Am I right?

If I am in the market for a new camera what should I get?
I want something that is not real heavy, takes great pics, takes the picture when I hit the shutter button (not the picture that is happening 1-3 seconds later!), has a good zoom AND is under $500. I'm not asking much right?
We take pictures of family, sports, vacation and disney. Thats about it.
My dad (who is a total shutterbug) has suggested a Canon SX or EOS. I just wanted to get someone else's opinion. My dad tends to go high-end on his cameras (even though he is a frugal freddy when it comes to everything else!:rotfl:)

Sounds like what happened to my A75 camera earlier this year. It was my family's oldest digital and it finally went to that great delete bin in the sky.

I have an S5 and if I had to replace it today, well first, my wife would kill me since we already have a Canon Rebel and Canon XSi, but I digress. If I had to replace it today, I'd get one of the new Canon's that replaced the S5 line, specifically the SX200.

It is your sensor.
This just happened to my mom's my Sony T1. She bought a new one and gave this to me to either fix or give to our 2yr old as a toy. Well I googled the issue and got it fixed for the cost of shipping from Sony. Here is the website that details the sensor problems. Your camera is listed. http://www.imaging-resource.com/badccds.html

Here is the link to Canon's advisory on the issue with contact info.

All I had to do was call Sony and they emailed me a UPS shipping label I sent it to them last week and UPS delivered the fixed camera today. Same camera, but new sensor!! Now my wife has a nice P&S that fits nicely in her purse.

P.S. MAGICX2, GO BUCKS... I grew up in Ohio and went to OSU then moved to sunny FL.

especially for point and shoots! I'd replace it. If you don't want to go SLR then walk into a store and check out the G series especially the G10 or any of the other new ones coming out. Image stabilization and other features will be new to you. Also read up online. There are many great cameras in your price range.

That sounds exactly like what happened to my old Canon A70 - black, jagged lines (my lines were purple). A PP posted a link to Canon's advisory - email them. They'll tell you exactly what to do - you tell them what's wrong, they'll send you a mailing label and you send it back; they'll fix it for free and send it back to you. I don't really use my A70 much, but I got it fixed just in case I wanted a smaller camera to shove in my purse for when I didn't want to take my "better" camera with me.

If you're looking to upgrade, I recently got the Canon SX10 IS, and I LOVE it! :lovestruc It has a 20x zoom that is just amazing! I upgraded from the S3, which I guess is similar in size to your S1. The SX10 is a little larger overall, but it's well worth it if you don't want to go to the expense of a dSLR.

I called the number for Canon and they are going to send the shipping label for me to send it to them to be repaired. Thanks ssanders79!

I think I am going to go ahead and get a new camera. I have not been happy with the S1 IS for a while now. But, I will get it fixed for a back up! Now, I just need to do some research. Keep the suggestions coming. :goodvibes

I had my A70 replaced with a brand new A520 aan had a S1 IS replaced with a refurb S2 IS under that recall. It was more of a problem in hot humid climates. I live in SW FL, enough said...
