Is this realistic?

I did forget to add that I made this weekend's 16 mile run, which was pretty slow because we take turns with the slower runners of the group and it was my turn. Did the first 16 around 2.5 minutes slower/mile than usual. One of the guys who'd gone ahead took the second half though, so I picked up the pace the second half. Sadly, I managed to run out of water about a mile and a half from the end with no water fountain, which meant I ended up walking the last half mile or so. Thankfully we had a pair of non-runners (one the spouse of a runner and the other an injured runner) who set up a water station at the halfway point and then again at the end, so there was plenty of water waiting when I got to the end. Happily, it was a beautiful run - from Mount Vernon (yes, George Washington's house) north 8 miles and back. (Link to Google images of the trail.)

No workout Sunday or Monday (I just didn't feel like getting up this morning) so tomorrow gets 6 miles before work instead of a rest day. I did take the dogs to the dog park with a stream and we hiked up and back between waterfalls, so I got a little exercise in.

Good job getting out there and fitting in the run, as if you can "fit" in a 16 mile run. :-)

I'm kind of glad you are listening to your body. It's tough but it's not worth making it worse. So what are you thinking about your Saturday race? I hope you feel comfortable taking it easy.

I talked to my friend today and I will get in touch with the personal trainer tomorrow. Hopefully we will be able to set up a time to meet and talk about our goals this week.

I ran this morning. My shin didn't hurt, so that is good news. My foot did, but not as bad as it had been. That is good news. Mentally it felt like a million dollars to be out there running (I NEVER would have said that just 2 years ago). As for Saturday, I am struggling. I want to run the race badly. I think I could improve my corral placement. I am just trying to convince myself to go run it and have fun, that it isn't that important to improve my time, that I will be happy no matter what corral I am in at Disney, because I will be at Disney. If I don't run this race Saturday I will be GRUMPY! I will feel like a failure for not finishing a race I signed up for. I know this is the wrong way to think. I recognize it all. It's just how my mind works. It will be a cool race, finishing at the Plymouth Rock.

So, to answer your question, I have no idea what I am going to do. I am playing it by ear and I will see how I feel later in the week. It may also depend on the weather.

As always I am jealous of your running trails. :D I think it is awesome that you all take turns with the slower runners. I'm not sure how hot it has been down there, but up here we have been running in the 90's with high humidity. It's been rough. I just have to say that you are an amazing person with all the volunteer work with dogs, helping others with their running and not to mention your military service. You are an amazing example to follow. :)

I agree with StayCool on everything. I especially agree on being jealous of where you get to run. I LOVE U.S. history so to be able to run down there would be so awesome. I will run the MCM one day, I just have to. That's why I would love to finish my race at the Plymouth Rock, it's the closest I can come to where you get to run.

I just wanted to pop in and say that I have an appointment with the trainer on Friday evening to talk about boot camp and personal training. I figured you would all be proud of me! ;) lol

I do enjoy our running trails for sure. It's good to be able to look around when you're running, and since they're all paved, it's easy to run. Sometimes I laugh at myself for driving 30 minutes just to get to a different route, but that happens a lot. As for the other stuff - service is a lifestyle, not just a job. I get as much or more than I give.

Glad the rest helped...stay easy on it through the rest of the week. Go into the race to relax and have fun - you might be surprised at how well you do. Hopefully there will be crowds, that always helps keep me moving. Come back and tell us what the best outfit you saw was, and the funniest sign.

Huzzah! I am proud of you!

I ran Tuesday morning, but missed Wednesday run today because my Deputy's wife is sick and he stayed home to take care of her and the 2 year old, but that meant I needed to be in early today. Not sure he'll be in tomorrow (I told him to stay home until she's better) but I'm still going to run. The other guys in the office have the morning routine down to a science. I think Saturday in 18 miles, so I'm trying to decide how I'm going to work my third run of the week on Friday. That one may be short.

Yep, I am proud. It is a big first step. Let us know how it goes and what the plan is after you meet.

I did a 26 mile bike ride this morning just to keep up the conditioning for the race. I will rest the next 2 days. I am 98% sure I am running the race now. If I hear we are having bad weather or something that would be the only thing that stops me I think, I can't risk further injury slipping on wet roads or something. Today I was on my feet after my ride and my foot wasn't really hurting. It was weird. I have no idea what happened. It hurt a little bit but nothing like it was, especially considering I just ran 2 days ago.

As crazy as it sounds I am jealous of your 18 mile run this weekend. I should be around 20 right now and I so wish I could do it. Good job not letting the crazy schedule slow you down though.

Good on you for the bike ride! Resting until the race is a good idea.

My shins are bugging me again, so instead of running my usual Friday 6, I cut it to two since I'd done 5 miles of speedwork (6 400m repeats, 2 200m repeats plus warm up and cool down) and I have 18 on tap for tomorrow. I'm going to try to run at my goal marathon pace tomorrow, so we'll see how it goes. The good news is that the weather has broken and it won't be 80+ degrees for the long runs!

So I met with the personal trainer and he seems pretty cool. He looks like the kind of high energy, keep it moving kind of person I need. It is $130 for a month of boot camp and he offers classes every day but Sundays. It is $220 for 4 weeks of personal training. That includes 3 times a week one on one, meal plans and support via phone/text/facebook. Today I paid for a punch card for 5 classes and put a deposit on October's boot camp class. I'm going to hold off on personal training right now until I get a feel for the classes. I really really want to do the personal training because I need help being accountable. I'm just not sure about the $$ just yet. I am definitely excited though!

Thanks for the well wishes. I have been quiet for a couple days on here because I was nervous about this race. I ran it. I finished. I have a pic from the finish line but I have to figure out how to make it smaller to upload it.

I learn something from each of these races. This one started out bad, I was in pain the first 4 miles. Once everything warmed up it hurt less so it wasn't too bad. But, I got home and took my shoes and socks off and my foot is black and blue. So, I clearly need to shut it down for a while now. Even though I will try to convince myself to run my marathon in October, as time gets closer, I know I shouldn't so I am deciding not to now. I hate not doing it but I need to fix my foot as much as possible to be able to run Disney.

I didn't improve my corral placement like I wanted so I am disappointed in that but I am glad I ran. The course was VERY hilly. It was brutal. If it was flatter I could have improved my time. Once I realized I wasn't going to improve it I just tried to relax and enjoy it as much as I could. But my time was 2:06:03 with a foot injury. Not too bad I guess.

StayCool- that is great news about the classes and personal trainer. Well, not the price but if you get the results you want, and the support, and the accountability, then the price will be a bargain. When do you think your first class will be?

OK, here it is. I have the Plymouth Rock as well if anyone wants to see it, for those who haven't. :-)

I'm glad you did enjoy your race at least. It looks like a beautiful course. I'm a little concerned about your foot being all bruised though. Is there a sports med doctor you could see for guidance? It is probably a good idea to decide about the race now.

I'm hoping to go to my first class tomorrow night after work. I need to check in with the hubby first though. I'm fine with the price of the classes for the month of October. I'm guessing that the personal training cost is average but I have nothing to compare it to. At first I was thinking I would have to pay for both at the same time. I guess realistically, if I'm working out with him 3 days a week, I wouldn't really need the other classes as well. Idk though.

Happy Sunday everyone!

This was my best run of the season, which was a surprise given how poorly the morning started. The group met at a new place and I took THREE wrong turns...then arrived only to realize that I had a water belt, but no water and no nutrition. ARGH. Did I mention it was raining? One of the group had a water bottle, some extra water, and some Tailwind, which was new to me. Waiting2goback, you might give that stuff a try - it's nutrition and hydration in one shot and I have to say that it worked so well for me that I think I'm going to buy it for the marathon. I drank every 2-3 miles and felt great the whole time. The run was beautiful - we saw a beaver, ran by sets of canal locks and waterfalls.

I am proud of you! And those prices are super reasonable (At least by big-city standards.)

Ouch. Maybe those new shoes weren't as great as you thought they were. It does sound like it's time to visit a doc again, though. Take it easy. (And your injured foot time is still better than my PR...)

Yeah, I might have to go to the foot doctor. It's weird though, that part of my foot doesn't really hurt today. Everything else does though. Because I haven't run for about 3 weeks and did my training on the bike my tendons and stuff are all sore because they aren't used to the pounding.

You have an interesting dilemma. Do you spend the money on one on one training with all the support that goes along with it or do you do the classes. They are the same trainer if I am understanding it correctly, right? So you will get this trainer either way. Do you think you will get more out of the classes or one to one attention? Either way, if you commit to one of them I know you will begin seeing the results, which will motivate you more than anything.

Tailwind sounds a lot like Generation UCan. Meb uses that stuff. I will look into your suggestion though. I want to try something like that.

I actually didn't wear my new sneakers for the race. My older ones are way more padded so I thought it would be better if I wore those. I think the problem, if I am being honest, was the hills. It was way more heal contact that I wanted. Going down all those hills, as you know, is a lot of impact on the heals. Both of them hurt when it is usually only my left foot. It was A LOT of hills.

We'll see. For now it is back to the bike to stay in shape, focus more in cross training, and in a few weeks I will start running again to get ready for January.

And I realize my time isn't bad. It just feels like a disappointment because of where I WANTED to be right now. But as you said about a week ago, I didn't do the work to be where I wanted to be. I did the work to be exactly where I am and compared to where my life was 2 years ago, it is still pretty good. I am disappointed I finished a 1/2 marathon and it took me more than 2 hours. That just means my goals are much higher than they used to be but I still finished a 1/2 marathon and when I put it in that perspective I am really proud of myself. :-) And if I am smart in about 120 days I will be able to say I finished a full marathon at WDW. These are things I never dreamed of doing 2 years ago.

I think that those prices are fairly normal around here. At least they sound good to me! ;)

Well I still think that overall you are doing great. You have continued to keep moving and you are reaching your goals despite not being as quickly as you would like. I understand the disappointment you are feeling but I am glad that you have some perspective on it. :)

As far as classes vs. personal trainer; I think that I will start with the classes first to get my feet wet. This is going to focus a lot more on weight lifting and strengthening muscles vs straight cardio, which is what I was doing. This way I can start to learn the new things. I do think I will go for the personal trainer aspect at some point. He will do a meal plan for me and help me focus on losing weight while getting fit. This will give me more direction than I can do independently. And if I am being honest, I would love to drag my husband too. Not that I won't do it alone. I will. But I worry about his health too. Anyway. I am excited and plan to go to my first class on Wednesday. :)

I think it's similar, which is why I thought of you. I tried the unflavored version, which tastes like sweet/sugared water. I think I'm going to order the orange to see if the citrus tastes okay since that's usually my preference.

Seems like a good idea to me - the classes at least give you a flavor for things. And I think that having someone to share the pain and laugh with helps make the classes go well.

I ran this morning but it didn't go well. I don't know if it's because I stood on my feet for five hours volunteering at a water stop for the Nation's Triathlon on Sunday or if it was just a delayed pain from Saturday, but about a mile in the sole of my feet started to hurt to the point where I had to stop and walk several times. It could even have been because this morning was the first we've had in the 50s in months (and it was the low 50s.) It's not plantar fascitis because it started after I started running, not in the morning. Hopefully tomorrow as a rest/gym day will give them a break and I can run on Wednesday.

I think either plan will work for you assuming it gives you the motivation to do it consistently. That's all you have been lacking up until now. You can do this. I always thought it from your first post. You just needed that vehicle that would allow you to want to do it consistently. Whatever combination of classes or personal training it takes to motivate you is all good.

As for your husband, don't worry about him right now. You worry about staying on track and setting the example. He will follow. I have seen it happen myself. My manager is now training to beat me in a 10K next year. Another girl who swore she would never run is doing a 5K Color run in a couple weeks. She says she will walk it but she may go there and love it and then be on her way to a healthier lifestyle. So I have 4 people just at work I have rubbed off on. You don't think if you stick to this and the changes follow that your husband won't see it and finally believe he can do it too? It's all about the belief. People don't stop exercising, from what I have learned, because they like being overweight and unhealthy. They stop because it gets hard and they don't believe they can do it. You show him differently!!! Me and Chiomaca know you can, that's why we are here. (Sorry to speak for you Chiomaca, correct me if I am wrong).

I will most likely order something soon. I don't think the GU works for me at all.

I LOVE the fall. It has always been my favorite season. Running in the fall is awesome. The problem is, it does take longer to warm up. I'm sure your feet will be fine. Just rest them before they get worse. Trust me, I learned the hard way. :crutches::rolleyes1

I started to do my P90X workout this morning but it even hurt doing my push ups. Balancing on my toes to do them really hurt the legs. So I only did 1/2 of it. I'll just take it easy this week, I'll do something every day most likely but not kill myself all at the same time.

Oh, I am watching closely - 40 days away from the marathon. (Yikes.) I'm running a Half this weekend and a 20 miler next weekend. Our training plan has this weekend as a 19 milers, then a step back to 14, then back to 20, but I think I'm going to do something less than 19 on Sunday. If I run to/from the finish line, I think that will get me about 16, so I'll stop at that, then do the 20 miler. during my step back week - so just swap them. That will give my feet some down time. Will have to see how my speed work goes tomorrow morning.

Had a doozy of a day today when it was supposed to be quiet. Instead of getting a midday gym sortie in, I spent 14 hours working non-stop. I didn't get lunch until 2 and it took me three hours to eat it. Good thing I bought something that was okay cold!

I think that once I get started and it becomes routine I will be fine. Until the amount of money I paid out will be my motivation. I have already paid so off I go! And I know about my husband. I just hope I actually do rub off on him. He just texted me and told me that a friend of his just had 2 stents placed in his heart. That's the kind of thing I worry about. Oh well.

Glad you are taking it easy and recovering. :) And I agree, running in the fall is the best.

I hope your half goes well. :) And that your feet recover. Did work settle down? Days like that are so rough.

I'm just anticipating my class tonight. I get anxious about meeting new people and trying new things so I can't wait until class is over. It gets easier after that. lol I will check in tomorrow and let you all know how sore I am! I fully expect to be moving a bit slower than normal. lol

Reporting in after my first boot camp class. It was a bit intimidating and overwhelming at first, but you know me. New experiences aren't exactly my forte. The trainers were very nice and helpful. The first part of class was straight up HIIT. Weights, kicking, punching, jumping, step ups, sit ups... I thought I was going to die. lol My lungs were on fire and it was rough. I made it through though. Then we did more focused movements like calf raises, lunges, chair sit etc. Those were good but tiring. We finished out with ab work. It was a good class and I'm proud to have made it through the whole thing. It is not something that I would go to without some prior physical activity though. Today everything is sore except my feet and hands. lol Sitting and standing are definite reminders of my workout. It isn't too bad though. I am going to try to get a walk in tomorrow morning and then my next class Saturday morning. I really think this will be good for me.

Nope. I've been running for days now. But if it works out, we'll have done something that most of us think isn't possible. (Or I'll be pissed off because I worked my butt off for three days on something that went nowhere, as I predicted, but had to work on anyway.)

I'm glad you had fun - and proud of you for getting moving. Yay You!

That is awesome news. Well, not the soreness but you can't avoid that. And that reminder of your workout is good. It is a sign of progress. It sure sounds like a solid workout, one that you probably wouldn't have done on your own. It sounds like money well spent. You will probably still be sore by your next class and if you work that hard again it means you will be sore for quite a while. The whole time I was reading your post I was thinking to myself, "Yes, this is exactly what she needs". I am excited for you.

I took a few days off, I needed to. My lower body was so sore. My left ankle is still killing me. Nothing major, just all the ligaments and tendons under the ankle bone are still sore. I guess it shows that you can't do your training for these races on a bike. Sure it keeps up your endurance but you need the legs to be used to the pounding.

I had today off and got back out on the bike. My thighs were still sore from the race too so I took it easy on the ride. I was just trying to get back into the swing of things. It felt good to get back out there. It felt like it had been more than a couple days.

So when do you find out if all your hard work paid off or not? I would have a hard time working on something I thought was a waste of time.

I finally could walk up and down stairs today without wincing. Yay! Then I went to my second class. I'm not sure yet how sore I'm going to be. Once I got warmed up in class I felt good. Today was a lot of the same stuff as last time but the second half was cardio kick boxing. It was good and I'm glad I'm going.
