Is this realistic?

StayCool, congrats. I was wondering how you were doing the whole night. We got perfect weather.

I did better than expected but not as good as I hoped. Thankfully I developed another blister next to the one I had already. I also got another one on a different part of the foot. Looks like a painful day at the park tomorrow. I will post more detail about my race on Monday. A way better experience than i expected. Typing on the phone not so fun.

Thanks! I typed up a whole long post and it disappeared. :( I will repost after I get home in a couple days with all the details.

I have a question though. Runkeeper showed that I ran almost 12 miles vs the 10. Is it normal for there to be that much difference?

It's very possible. It depends where on the course you ran and how much weaving through traffic you had to do. The way they measure courses is they do it on the shortest part of the course. So, say they measure the left side of the street and you ran the right side the whole night it could add distance on top of weaving through traffic. My RunKeeper says 10.16 but I stayed pretty much on the left side of the road and stayed straight. Not much traffic after the first mile. I don't know if they measure where I ran. I just picked a side and stayed there.

I was all over the place. Left, right, center and back again. It was very crowded where I was until the end. Then it thinned out. I will post my splits when I get back to my computer

Doing that sort of zigzagging can definitely add the miles on! But 2 entire miles? Yipes. (the good news, however, is that you can definitely add a Half to your future repertoire, as long as you try to not zigzag too much)

So jealous about the weather for the TOT this year! Hoping it's cooler for the W&D. :)

This is your first post from this thread, February.

Ok, I'm looking for motivation. Here's the backstory. I'm about 100 lbs overweight. I'm doing weight watchers and have my good days and my bad days...

I have finally made reservations for our first Disney trip. While we are down there the 10 mile TOT race is going on. My thing is this; could I actually run it if I start training now? My friend just asked me to do a color run in April so I could start with the couch to 5 k and continue on. I could sign up for the 5k, but the TOT race looks like so much more fun... I'm not going to rush and sign up for anything yet, but I'm thinking it might give me some motivation to follow through. Thoughts?

And holy moly, you finished that race. And ran 2 more miles besides! YAY YOU!!!!!!!!

:cheer2:pixiedust::cheer2:

I'm all teary-eyed for you!

RunKeeper said 11.78 miles! :scared1: I was listening to it tell me my pace and distance and it was so far off from the mile markers that I got frustrated and took my earbuds out but just let it continue to track me. I wasn't sure if it was being crazy or not.

This is your first post from this thread, February.

:cheer2:pixiedust::cheer2:

I'm all teary-eyed for you!

I was pretty teary-eyed myself and if I think about it too much I get teary still! I know when I started this I wasn't sure if I could really do it and I had so far to go. During the last 2 miles I was dying (or felt like I was!) and determination to just finish is what kept me moving.

I will post my splits in the next post.

Here's my race recap:

I decided to wear my sparkle skirt even though I knew I shouldn't because I hadn't trained with it. I loaded up on anti-chafing stuff, mostly on my legs just in case. Turned out I was fine and I was very happy that I had worn it. It was cooler than my running capris would have been. I do have to say that I do not wear dresses or skirts regularly so it was weird at times.

Waiting in the corral for 2+ hours was boring. The people around me were nice and we chatted a little and I wasted time on my phone for a bit. I wanted to be in the front of my corral so I went right in when I got there. I listened to the dance party from there. The DJ was pretty good. :)

The walk to the start line was long. Like at least 1/2 mile long. It didn't bother me though because it was a nice warm up. I liked the start line and tried to get a good picture but failed. lol Usually when I start running I walk for about 3 minutes before I start run/walk, but I was good to go. The temperature was actually a little chilly to start but I was very grateful that it was not hot out. It was 68-69 degrees to start and the humidity was low.

I started out stronger than I normally do and it felt good for the first 1/2 mile or so. Then I started to get psyched out a bit by all the people passing me. I knew that I had a ton of people between me and the balloon ladies, but it was really bothering me. Plus I fell into my usual "What the heck am I thinking? I can't do this." Blah blah blah. That sticks with me for the first couple of miles. I hit mile 3 and then I felt good. I was listening to the Run Keeper app and was thrilled with my pace. It was around the Disney mile 4 that I realized the course markings were not even close to matching up with Run Keeper. :(

I ended up pulling out my ear buds because it was messing with my head to hear the differences in distance. I had set up the text alerts to go to my phone so I knew what my 5k and 10k splits were and they weren't what I thought they were supposed to be.

Around mile 7 I started to be able to hear the balloon ladies yelling for people to pick up the pace. I started freaking out. At 7 1/2 miles they had caught me. I was so disappointed and angry with myself. I had started at the beginning of Corral I and I still couldn't stay ahead of them. I never saw anyone get swept, but the balloon ladies were talking about it. Then they said that everyone needed to hurry up because they weren't sure if there was going to be another sweep at mile 8. By mile 8 they had passed me and I couldn't keep up.

My mental dialogue with myself was not good. At that point I was still trucking along, but my feet, legs and lower back were starting to hurt. I was ashamed that I was not going to be able to finish but part of me was thinking "if you are going to pick me up, just do it already". Obviously they didn't sweep anymore and once I got into the park I was relieved. I was still upset that I hadn't done better and I knew that was partly because I blew my training for the last couple of weeks.

Once we got into the park all the volunteers kept telling us that we had less than a mile to go and I swear they were saying that for 2 miles! I felt like a rat in a maze. Every time I turned a corner thinking that had to be it, well it wasn't. I almost forgot; right as we got to enter the park there was a DJ at the entrance trying to encourage the last of us that were trudging along. He asked me my name and then started saying how well I was doing and that we went way back, like 5 seconds back. lol That brought a smile to my face and made the last bit easier to deal with.

Ok, so now what we have all been waiting for, the numbers. Disney first.

5k split - 52:30
10k split - 1:46:54
Finish - 2:55:44

Ok, these are my RunKeeper splits. They are nothing like anything I've had.

Mile 1 - 13:37
Mile 2 - 15:31
Mile 3 - 13:40
Mile 4 - 14:36
Mile 5 - 17:09 (porta potty break here)
Mile 6 - 15:35
Mile 7 - 14:14
Mile 8 - 15:08
Mile 9 - 15:29
Mile 10 - 15:12
Mile 11 - 16:03

Total time: 2:55:23
Total miles: 11.78

I'm not sure what to think. :confused3 I know I was all over the course. I was trying to stay in the center but it didn't seem to ever work out. I also ran by feel. I didn't have set intervals. I would walk until I felt I had recovered and then I would run again. I would pick a person up ahead that was walking and wouldn't stop running until I reached them. Silly but it worked. lol

After the race my feet were killing me. My wonderful hubby met me at the finish line and was able to see me cross it. It wasn't anything spectacular because I was walking but it meant a lot to me. I got my medal and was thrilled. I wasn't thrilled with the amount of walking I had to do in order to get out from the runner's area though. lol I had wanted to have a beer and at least ride TOT once with my medal. Instead I switched shoes and we slowly made our way out of the park back to the resort.

Yesterday I sat by the pool and used the hot tub for a bit. My feet were pretty sore. Today we flew home and my legs stiffen if I sit too long, but it is getting better. I'm not exactly looking forward to work tomorrow though. lol Overall I had a great experience with my first Disney vacation and first RunDisney event. :cool1:

I'm on the skytrain reading this and people are looking at me funny because I'm crying! You did awesome - I'm so inspired by you right now. I remember the last few km during the first day of the weekend to end breast cancer and I was feeling the exact same things you were so reading this I was right there with you. I'm so glad your hubby was able to watch you cross the finish line. You go girl!! Wanna join me in 2015!

I'm going to start my 2015 training thread and bumbershoot I'm counting on you to repost it for me when I cross the finish line!

Well, 2 extra miles is a lot. I agree. But, we also don't know when she started her app. Did she start when the actual race started and still had to walk to the start line? Did she turn it off ASAP after she crossed the finish line or still walk til the water tables, etc... I don't know any of that so I was just giving a theory as to how it could have happened. But, some of those roads were 3 lanes wide. If she went from one side to another quite a bit that is an extra 30' each time. And, it doesn't really matter. What's important is that she crossed the finish line and if the app is correct (and I've had some issues with RunKeeper lately) then she now knows she could do a 1/2 marathon. :thumbsup2

The most important thing is, you FINISHED. I knew you would and you did. You didn't let the negative talk get to you and you crossed the finish line. As you put it, you blew off your training the last couple of weeks. Its a lesson learned.

Keep in mind you raced this race after navigating the parks for days beforehand and those days were hot and humid. It can suck a lot out of you.

As far as RunKeeper. Mine wasn't working right either. Mine is set up to give me updates every 5 minutes. It updated me at minute 5 and not again until 25 minutes and it was sporatic after that. No pattern. It can be distracting. I took my ear buds out once I entered the park anyway because I wanted to hear all that was going on and soak in the experience.

As far as you not being sure what to think. You should be thinking your pretty damn proud of yourself. Last year at this time you were pretty inactive, correct? Now you just got home from your first Disney vacation (I want to hear more about your impressions of that as well) and running 10 MILES!!!!!! Hello, 10 MILES. It's not like you walked to the street corner.

My question to you is, what are you going to do next? Is there another Disney race in your future?

Here's my review of the race.

First, Disney people are so nice. I am not one to strike up conversation with strangers but I do at Disney. Everyone I talked to would answer back and at least have a small conversation. When I got to the airport (still in Disney mode) to go home I tried talking to a guy and he looked at me like I had 4 heads and ignored me. It was then I realized my trip was over and I was no longer at Disney. :(

I LOVED the whole experience. They run everything so well. This whole experience for me was about getting out of my comfort zone and I did that. I would do some things differently for my next race but it was a learning experience so I learned stuff. :)

First thing I would change I think, I would go right before the race and use any extra days for after the race. I was so worried about stomach issues during the race if I ate the wrong thing I was stressed at meal time. And, I was trying so hard to fit everything in that I was walking so fast I got a huge blister. I came home with 3 huge blisters on my left foot and one on my right.

I might also rent DVC for my next race so I can have a kitchen and make my own food. Not only would it be cheaper but I could eat healthy. By the race I had a pain in my stomach and ran with it. I think it was from eating crappy food, and I was trying to eat well. Its just not the same when you can't control what you put in it.

I was a bit disappointed in the Expo. I'm sure the other races are bigger, and I went on Saturday so that might be part of it. I just didn't think the race merchandise was worth it. I did take a pic with Jeff Galloway but he got swept off to do some promotional video so I didn't get to talk to him. I attended one of the speaker sessions, which was good. I bought a new arm band for my phone. I needed it and I got a good deal. That's all the money I spent.

As for the race itself. I sat next to a woman on the bus who was in corral A. She was very supportive. She obviously takes this stuff seriously. She runs 3-4 Disney races a year. Has run the Chicago marathon 10 times and Boston 3. Once off the bus she took a few minutes to show me how to navigate the parking lot as it was pretty overwhelming to me when I first got there. I got there early. As it got closer to the race the place was packed.

I wandered around the parking lot. I signed the "book" they had. I talked to a few people. The DJ was great. The lines for the porta potties were ridiculous. Another thing I wish I did differently was to get in the corral sooner. I would have finished higher had I started sooner. I was planning on it but underestimated the lines for the potty.

As for the race, I mentioned earlier that my RunKeeper wasn't working properly. I ran the race in 1:29:50. RunKeeper said my paces was 8:52, which was 10 seconds faster than my previous race. I pushed myself hard because I wanted to finish in the top 500. I did not do that but I know I gave it everything I had so I am happy about my effort.

The weather was perfect. I was still dripping sweat when I finished but it was great. Because I finished pretty early I had no issues finding a bathroom to change in. I never saw the changing tent. I did see the lines for the women's rooms to change were LONG later in the after party. I was able to get on RnR 2 times and ToT one time before the lines got big. The party itelf was A LOT more crowded than I expected.

My advice to Dizzy, after experiencing the race, is to work my butt off to get as fast as possible by June and do a 10K as late in June (the cutoff for POT is July 1st, or atleast it was this year) so you can move up as many corrals as possible. This gives you more time to enjoy the afterparty.

I left the party at 2 am. It took me until about 4am to settle down and fall asleep.

Overall, I was really proud of myself. The last year has been tough with the marital issues and stuff. I could have given up but I worked hard and did it.

I'm probably missing something so I may add more another day if I remember it. I will do many more Disney races in the future. I made a new set of goals on the flight home and it will be time to get to work on those this week (once my blisters heal ;)) My marathon is 2 weeks from yesterday. That one has me nervous. Hopefully you guys will keep posting and it doesn't die now that the race is over.

I started it while I was waiting for them to release our corral. We were standing at the start line. I also shut it off as soon as I finished. If I hadn't it would've been reflected in the speed.

Decided to check in to see how you did. Congratulations! Remember this feeling.

Thank you! I wish I could join you but I have a feeling my husband would kick my butt. No Disney races in my future next year. :( Hopefully in 2016.

Yup. I need to stick with my training next time. My life got crazy in a million different ways and I didn't cope with it well. I just kind of shut down and withdrew from everything. Oh well.

The race was an after thought and added to my vacation after I had already set my dates. It was great but the days in the park did take a toll on my feet. I am glad that I did park days first though because I am still sore now and it would be really rough to walk the parks like this.

I had RunKeeper updating me every minute (I know, excessive but it is how I track my pace) and it was. It never skipped (that I know of because I did take out my earbuds between mile 4 & 5). Idk what to think about the times and stuff. I wish I knew for sure what my times were.

I swear I AM proud of finishing the 10 miles. I guess I am just hard on myself. I expected to do better than I did and I had expected to have lost more weight by now. Oh well. I am a work in progress and plan to keep on trucking.

Like I said earlier, no Disney races next year. My priority in life is to travel and experience things. My husband wants to put our money into the house and material things as he has travelled a lot as a kid and in the military. So as a compromise I will hold off until 2016 most likely. I do Swagbucks and Perk so I will continue to do that and squirrel away gift cards for now. :)

Here's my review of the race.

I am glad that you had a good race. :) I hear you about not knowing what to eat. I decided that since nothing bothered my stomach I would pretty much eat whatever I wanted. I controlled my portion sizes but I did have some sweets. I am lucky to have an iron stomach. ;) I would eat closer to the race though because I ate at 1-2p and then found myself hungry in the corral. Good luck on your marathon and I hope it goes how you want it to.

Decided to check in to see how you did. Congratulations! Remember this feeling.

Thank you! I remember you telling me to just sign up so that I would continue to train. I am so very glad that I took that advice. :) It took me a couple of days but now I feel happy with my accomplishment. So 2 days after the race I am already looking around for what to do next.

Right now I am debating what to do next. There is a Returning Warrior race locally that is either 5 or 10 miles depending on what you sign up for. In order to do 10 miles you have to be able to finish in 2 hours. I can't do that but I can do 5. Disney wasn't as stressful because I knew I wouldn't be the last person. I am afraid that in "normal" races I would be. I wish I had more confidence and was able to say that it wouldn't bother me but I know it would.

Anyway, if for some reason I choose to skip it, I know that there are some 5k races locally starting in April. I need to come up with a training plan that will carry me through the winter so that I can improve some more and not lose what I have done. I do plan to continue Zumba because I really enjoy it. :)

I have an iron stomach too. Problem is, I have been eating so well for 10 months that going down there and eating nuggets and fries a few times, and some candy at the party it caught up to me. I don't know how much faster I would have been had I not eaten that stuff. I know I stopped a couple times because I had cramps but I just used those as my walk breaks anyway.

I brought a banana with me and ate it about an hour before the race started. That helped a bit with the hunger.

When is the local 10 mile race that you don't think you would be fast enough for?

I would like to hear about the actual trip. Was it everything you thought it would be? Any places you ate that you loved/hated? How was the resort? Any attraction or entertainment stick out as favorites?

Maybe I will be in the same 2016 race as you if you do one. I start my job Monday and then the countdown begins til I can finally move on from this situation. Once I do I plan to be a runDisney regular. I would love to see what some of these other races are like.

The race is November 9th so pretty much 1 month away. It requires completing the 10 miles in 2 hours. No way I can do that. But I can definitely do 5 miles with no problem. The only other thing is that there is a glow/blacklight Zumba the night before. lol I can do both, but it would be rough. If I don't do Zumba, there will be some hurt feelings. So I'm trying to figure out if I can handle both because I really would like to have the motivation of the run. I haven't really ran in the cold yet either so that will be another adjustment.

I hope the new job is going well!

My trip was great. I planned and planned. After the first couple of days I threw my plans out the window for the most part. lol On arrival night we went to MNSSHP. We bought tickets at Guest Services because we got the military discount and had to activate the 4 day passes we had. Well everyone's band but mine worked. So we ended up waiting for at least an hour and then I had to get a new band, so my pretty painted and glow in the dark band didn't get used. They gave us 4 mickey bars for our trouble.

I pretty much drove everyone around like chickens with our heads cut off to hit all the top rides because I knew we wouldn't get to do everything on our MK day. My family thought I was crazy, but the did what I wanted and had a blast. At the end we lined up for the second Boo to You parade. Then it got cancelled. :( And the sky opened up and poured. lol We were sopping wet by the time we got back to the resort.

Monday we went to DHS. It was a good time. We brought our ponchos that time. ;) We got to do all the rides we wanted and had a good time. My husband made DD go on the rockin' rollercoaster and she cried all through the line and the entire ride. lol After it was over she said it wasn't as bad as she thought. We ended up leaving before Fantasmic! and I'm glad we did because it got rained out anyway. We ate lunch at SciFi and that was pretty cool. Not uber exciting, but I enjoyed my beer and some a/c.

Tuesday was back to MK. We didn't do anything in the order I wanted and I let the kids take the lead since we did most of what I wanted during MNSSHP. We were there for opening. Around 5-6 we were all tired but we had an ADR at the Crystal Palace for 7 so we toughed it out. We were in line for Splash Mt when the ride went down. They gave us a replacement FP so we used it on Space Mt. later. Dinner was fine, but nothing really exciting. Not worth the price tag IMO.

Wednesday we went to DTD and met up with my aunt and uncle for a couple of hours. Then we just wandered around, in and out of all the stores. I went to Fit2Run and bought amazing "recovery" sandals because my feet hurt. I was skeptical but getting a little desperate. lol Let's just say I lived in them after the race. :) We went to Raglan Rd and had a good meal. The entertainment was fun and I really liked the band that was singing.

Thursday was Epcot. By then we were just tired. I had hyped up Food & Wine and it ended up just being so hot that we bailed. We did a few rides in the beginning of the park and walked around the Showcase. We stopped at a few booths but not like I had imagined. I did have the most amazing grapefruit beer in Germany though. I hope I can find it locally.

Friday we went to Ohana for breakfast. My kids were super excited to meet Stitch. They even had him autograph their stuffed Stitches. The breakfast was really good and I wouldn't hesitate to do it again. DH took the kids back to the resort to swim and I took the expo bus to get my packet. I had pre-ordered the pin and necklace. I also wanted to get the jacket. I had seen it on facebook and fell in love. I also found the sparkle skirt and decided to give it a try. I tried in on there and it was really comfy. I got an orange RunDisney cup on the way out. Then I headed back to the resort. I got to my room and my red band wouldn't let me in! I had to have my husband come back and let me in. At that point my original band worked as the room key. We went to Boat Wright's for dinner and both had the prime rib. It was really good. Then off to bed.

Saturday was up early to hit AK. I get there wearing my painted band and it wouldn't let me in. :/ They ended up giving us each 2 extra FPs to make up for it. We made it to Tusker House for breakfast. It was good too. Then I rushed around doing the things I wanted because I planned to leave at noon to go rest. DH and the kids wandered around after I left and had a blast. I went and got some lunch and took it back to my room. I tried to sleep and dozed off and on for 2 hours. Then I gave up. I started getting ready for the race. :) I hit the first bus over. After the race we just went back to the room. I really wish we had ridden TOT at least but oh well. My feet hurt!

Sunday was our last day. I tried to sleep in but I couldn't. I moved in my sleep and my legs were so sore that it woke me up. :( We just went to the pool and hung out all day. It was nice to relax. Around 6 we ate at the food court and went back to pack. Up at 4 am the next day to check our luggage and ride ME back to the airport.

Overall it was a great trip. We barely used FP at all. Partly because most of the time we didn't need to and partly because we were not in the right place at the right time. We stayed at POR Riverside and our room was far far away. I wish we had been more centrally located. The food court was good, but we didn't care for the breakfast there. The kids definitely want to go back and I think my husband does too, but he won't admit it. lol
