Situation; a friend of mine has a daughter whose husband contracted a food born illness. The daughter has been exposed and requires blood work and vaccination, and has made an appt. with my DH. The children will be seen by a pediatric ID guy. My friend, whom I seldom hear from called last night and said; "I have eaten there and change the baby's diapers, etc, should I be seen?" I spoke with DH and he said that SHE could come in today with her daughter. At 11:02 (their appt was at 11) she called ME and asked where the office was. So already they are late. A couple of minutes later, her cell number rings back to my house and there is another voice on it, a male. He had the "wrong" number. It didn't take long to figure out that she was bringing her husband! I called DH's sec'ty and not only did she bring her husband but a total of 8 people came in including the NANNY!!! Don't they think that there are other patients scheduled? I hope they all have insurance. This could be costly!

Wow, that's pretty nervey. Are these people normal patients of your husband's?

Sounds more like nerVOUS to me. I hope they all test negatively.

No, he has never seen any of them as patients before. He is an Infectious Disease Specialist.

WOW! VERY rude and nervy! :sad2: I would bill the unscheduled patients as emergency visits! :)

But there are primary care physicians, walk in centers for screening and such things as telephones to make an appointment! I can't imagine doing that to physicians that I know well!

Wow!! It was pretty nervy, do doubt about it. But if this is a SERIOUS illness that they were exposed to they are probably so freaked out that they weren't thinking clearly. I hope your DH's secretary billed them all seperately and he didn't get too far behind with his patients (how could you not, 8 people!). I truly hope they're all OK. Once the tests come back negative (cross fingers) give her a call and calmly explain why it wasn't a good idea. I'm thinking she was just too scared to make a good decision.

He wouldn't bill punitively but the entire thing with gamma globulin, vaccine, blood work, titres, etc won't be cheap. It kind of addresses the issue of why sometimes patients with appointments have to wait to be seen..

That's pretty nervy. I hope they realize that they'll be billed for this.

I think it is very rude. I sure hope he makes them wait until all of the SCHEDULED patients have been seen. I would be really mad if I was scheduled and I had to wait an extra hour or so for all of these people.

Oh, come on you guys! She made a bad decision because she was scared spitless! Yes, she made a mistake but the OPs DH is a specialist in that field, correct? Yes, she was wrong but can you at least understand how freaked out they must be?

He may not be able to due to the nature of the illness.

You know, I can almost justify bringing the husband but to bring the Nanny and other people not in your family? Those people should be notified but they need to seek their own care, make an appointment or go to the ER.

I could see why she was freaked out, BUT she should have said I am bringing 7 more people, can you fit us all in? If you were a scheduled appointment waiting for your SCHEDULED appointment time wouldn't you be really ticked off if someone who had an appointment for 1 person showed up with 8? Imagine how far behind that put him. Wasn' there just a thread a bit back about how much people hate to wait for doctors and they are always behind...something like this is what causes it.

Exactly. There was permission for one more person. DH said that she could come with her daughter. That was it! She even asked me last night about her pregnant DIL and her son. I told her that they needed to contact their doctors, so she really knew that this wasn't appropriate. If she calls me, I will tell her.
In fact, I think the sec'ty told them that she had to borrow vaccine from the ER.
"My friend's" DH owns a business like the one my DS#1 works in. Last year she called under the pretext of referring a customer to DS. It turned out that there was "no customer". Her DH asked her to call and find out if my DS's company carries the product they advertize because he wanted the franchise for it and couldn't get it because it was taken. I couldn't believe that she had done that. I didn't confront her because I wanted to be sure that the bases were covered for my DS. Giving out a business "secret" would have gotton him fired even if it wasn't a secret. I know I am being cryptic in this case but trust me, it would have been a problem and I felt used in the situation.

That's really nice.

I would be very tempted to tell them you could only see the people you agreed to see. Everyone else can call and make appointments like the rest of the world has to do.

I'm sorry that this "friend" is taking advantage of you in these ways.

The issue with DS was upsetting. Just when you think you know someone....
I stopped having lunch with her when it turned into "My DH is such a good employer and your DS's boss is awful, etc, etc". Not those words but definately, without a doubt that meaning. My response was alway, "DS likes his boss and is treated very fairly", and "lets not talk shop".
