Is this normal?

Maybe I need to add that these families are rather new here. A Hispanic mom who has been here for at least 15yrs gets on these new ones and tells them that you have to watch them and that you cant leave them (1yr and under) home while you go 10 miles to pick up your older kid. tells them that this is not Mexico. and that they need to be more American.

So that is why I asked, I wondered if it was normal for Mexican families to do this.

Oh my...OP, your posts just get better and better:rolleyes1

I guess only you can judge?? You told the OP to 'get over it' because she questioned the kids running around a Mass. A Mass during which her son was receiving a very special sacrament. And nationality or culture has nothing to do with it. I've seen plenty of American born parents allowing that type of behavior and it stinks.

But there is nothing you can do about it. You are right, it is everywhere. Maybe one day they will realize they need to grow a backbone and parent the kids. Until then, move on. It isn't worth getting all uptight over.

Then those unruly, obnoxious children on the wedding thread must be Mexican. I didn't realize that!

And like a PP said those Mexicans and their culture are the reason children don't get invited to weddings...

Not sure what you are getting at. It is also normal for many South Americans to not discipline their little boys, at all.

At the risk of being flamed, I will say that during the four years I lived in Chile, I noticed a lot of 'permissive parenting'. We learned never to go to a restaurant on Sunday because it would undoubtedly be filled with kids running around and screaming.

I think that there is much more tolerance in some cultures for what is considered 'normal, childish behaviour'. Other patrons didn't seem to be bothered by the kids running around, and in fact seemed to enjoy the chaotic, 'family-friendly' atmosphere.

I will say that while the smaller children's behaviour often fit my criteria for 'spoilt brats' and made me cringe on a regular basis, somehow these kids turned into VERY well-mannered, respectful adolescents. :)

It is not normal for any child to run around the alter or the rest of the church during a service. I have never seen it in all of my days.

I wonder if it's normal behavior for people in NW kansas very very small towns to see bad behavior and think that it's because of the misbehaving kids' parents' nationality.

I can't believe people are making such a big deal over this.

I don't think OP was being racist. What I got out of this was that OP is unfamiliar with Mexican culture so she wanted to do her due diligence before assuming anything. I, however, know that bad parenting comes in all colors. One trip to Disney will teach you that.

I don't know, is it normal for people to have a holier-than-thou attitude because they aren't from a small town? Isn't assuming someone is dumb based on the region they live in no better?

Isn't this much like all of the anti-Brazilian posts?

amen!!

Racisim is alive and kicking in little towns in NW Kansas. Let me assure you that not everyone in Kansas thinks like the op. Just like not all Mexicans let their children run wild in church. FYI, I'm Mexican American. That behavior would not be tolerated. But you go right ahead and continue to make stereotypes. :rotfl:

I guess no one is allowed to ask a question about cultural parenting, and how they parented in their birth country. I am far from racist. I never said all Mexicans let their kid run wild, I just noticed it in the newer families that arrive. I've seen tension between the ones that have been here longer with the newer ones. That probably goes along with any nationality.

I am done with this post. You can think what you want about me. Even though you know nothing about me, or my family. I just asked a question to understand a culture.

Glad to hear it. :thumbsup2

Yup --- we all know how people on the boards love to trash the Brazilians and yet that is OK in the eyes of DISers.

OP -- it's bad parents and lack of parenting skills of an individual not a certain culture of nationality as a generality.

I am unclear as to why a Mexican mom that would leave her one year old alone in order to go get a child that was 10 miles away, wouldn't also be a Mexican Mom that would just tell the child 10 miles away to walk home alone.

It would be easier and just as stupid.

OP, I've seen kids do this and have no clue whether they are part Mexican or not, but I don't think all of them have been of hispanic origin. I believe it's more a parenting thing than a cultural thing.

Anglo? Hahahaha. Is that gonna be our gang name?

Im Mexican and Cuban, hispanic all over. All I have to say is this thread has me LMAO! I love good entertainment on a Sunday night.... Or is it just too much tequila this Cinco de Mayo?
