Is this illegal? Probably no - but odd? YES!

One of our stores was sold off to an independant retailer last year - they mistreated the staff - literally screamed at the manager every chance they got and finally got rid of them after Christmas. Thats not the issue I was curious about though. I just wanted to show what kind of people they were.

I found out what their check acceptance policy is today and I thought it was a little on the odd side. When you write a check in their store, the employee has to ask for a drivers license and a major credit card (hardly ever asked for now since you aren't allowed to record the number) and then the employee has to write down what race the customer is! Isn't that weird?

What do you think about that? Am I the only one that feels that is out there? What good would that information be to them?

What if you don't have a credit card? My in-laws are definitely able to cover their check but do not have a major credit card.

I would think that it would only be illegal if they used your race to decide whether to cash the check or not.

Something about that just doesn't sound right...
I work in a clothing store and when we cash checks we just put down the DL # and Exp. Date. I don't think the others are really neccessary. Like the above poster said-What if they simply don't have a Credit card?

Race? I worked in retail many years and that's a new one on me! That's insulting as well.

The credit card I can kinda understand, just to make sure it's used as a second id, like to check the sig.

But the other thing about "Race" I mean why, they aren't allowed to ask this on job ops, or anything else almost, why, why would you put this on a check?

Anyone out there have any ideas?
