I just got an email from disneyvacationclub@dvc.chtah.com and I was a little skeptical because the domain name looked fishy.

I did a whois on it and got:

Administrative Contact , Technical Contact :
Lindberg, Fred
hostmaster-cheetahmail@CHEETAHMAIL.COM
29 Broadway, 6th floor
New York, NY 10006
US
Phone: (212) 863-4600
Fax: (212) 863-4490

Record expires on 31-May-2011
Record created on 31-May-2000
Database last updated on 28-Jun-2006

I would think that anything that was legit would have a disney.com or a go.com domain.

It doesn't look like a scam per se, but the 800 number listed doesn't match up with any numbers for DVC I could find.

Has anyone else seen this?

Be careful out there!

edit: On second thought, it could be a perfectly legitimate reseller, but I would still be cautious.

Doesn't look legit to me...

What kind of e-mail was it? Anything suspicious? :scratchin

first-- whats the email in reference too

second--cheetah mail is an email forwarding/marketing service, they work with some pretty big names--disovery channel, Dollar,H&R Block, Brooks Brothers, National Geo

third--forward the email to DVC. They will be able to tell you immediately if its legit and if not they begin to track this issue and try to determine who is responsible

Yes, DVC does use chtah.com for some mass emails. The DVC Adventures by Disney email came from that address.

Perhaps the 800 number listed was your DVC Guides personal 800 number. Was it a special offer for add-ons (free vacation with "developers" points)

Sorry, I don't have the email anymore. The URL in the email (which I didn't click through, but typed directly in my browser) was a flash or macromedia page with pics and graphics. It didn't promise anything and looked rather professional.
All it listed was an 800 number.

I'm pretty sure it wasn't from our guide as we haven't closed on our resale yet.
:)

@sjdisneywedding:

I had vaguely remembered something about cheetah mail when I did the whois, but it didn't dawn on me until I read your post.
I wonder why they don't use the full name in their domain.

Oh well, false alarm, I guess. But you can never be too careful.

its ALWAYS better to be safe than sorry

especially in todays world, its truly amazing how these bad apples can go about obtaining info in pretty inconspicuous ways

I noticed something today I hadn't seen before. A DVC ad on a non-Disney website (one of those "double-click.com" ads) with a different toll free number. It looked to be a legit DVC ad, and I think they may be using differrent phone numbers to track where the lead came from. (ie internet ad, friend referral, Disney website, etc.)

Personally I think using an outside companies domain name is poor judgement by any company. Anyone can put a subdomain infront of thier domain name (dvc.anydomain.com). I personally err on the side of caution and delete all emails like that. My guess is that I have deleted a number of "real" emails because of this. But... better safe than sorry.

It is cool, but everytime I see it I can't get that silly Benny Hill music out of my mind. Talk about an ear worm. :rotfl:

Me too! :rotfl:

You wouldn't believe how hard it was to find that avatar, either!

And for the record, the character's name is Capt. Fred Scuttle!

Hey kapeman:

Have you always lived in Bham? If so, did you used to watch Benny Hill on Channel 13 at 11pm, like 20 years ago? ALso, the music is called Yakety Sax and was most often played by Boots Randolph.

I moved to BHM in '95, but I grew up in North Alabama. I watched the show on WOR out of New York on cable.

I wish that BBC America would show some of the older stuff that used to be in syndication. All they show is the more recent episodes that aren't as good.

Our guide sends us a little "what's going on in WDW" every time we take a trip. We just received our email for next week's trip and it came from the chtah address, too.
