My DS8 and I are currently booked in a standard studio at BWV from 5/31 - 6/9 for 144 points. I am really starting to hyperventilate about all those points used for 3 week-end nights (26 points each night). I thought about cancelling the first Saturday night (5/31), staying in a Value, then move over for the final 8 nights. BUT, if I go ahead and check in 5/31 (Sat) at BWV and stay 6 nights, I could cancel my remaining Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights at BWV and move over to a Value for those nights. That would save me 63 points - and gives me another trip to Disney later this year. I know it would be better to do the Value first, but it doesn't save me enough to do it that way. Would it be too much cultural shock.

WWYD? ;)

If you have the points and have done the deed.... then have fun. If after your stay you feel like the points aren't worth the weekend.... don't do it again. For now look forward to a wonderful stay. The beauty of DVC is you can change your plans every year.

I don't mind changing units once so I'd change and try something else for the full weekend. To me it's an opportunity to try something else, not a burden just to save a few points. Certainly if you had nothing to do with those points and didn't want to fool with renting, it'd be silly, but to give you another trip this year would be a great reason to fool with it. You could also see if MS has cash rooms with a discount that would give you the best of both worlds by not having to move and saving the points.

We've stayed at a value or mod on both ends of the stay, and we'll probably do it again. We don't have a lot of points, so it's worth it for us to move. I have to say, though, after three stays at Pop Century (for one night each) I'm willing to pay the extra to stay at POFQ, especially if it's for more than one night. It's more compact, seems less crowded and less noisy, and the rooms have a little more space, plus it has the refrigerator, which is nice.

I know what you mean, but the Moderates are priced at about $160. a night + tax. I always consider my points value at about $10. per point. If I did that for the last 3 nights, it's not a big enough savings to justify. ($630. at BWV or $540. at a Moderate) Unfortunately, a Value is the only way for it to make economical sense. :sad1: Even though at $107. per night + tax (AAA discount) for a Value doesn't seem like a very good deal either.

The flexibility with points is just another reason I love DVC! If I could squeeze another trip from those weekend points, I think I would. You'll still be getting a good part of vacation at BWV, so maybe plan more park days at the end and take time to enjoy BWV on the days you are there.

There are mixed opinions on switching to a value and I am probably more in the moderate resort camp if you can swing it, but others have fun at the values too.

Do you have an AP? Sometimes you can get a decent room discount with that, at least we have in the past. With the number of nights you're staying, then if you add another trip later this year, it may be worth it for you. There are usually code and discounts threads on the resort board that you might want to check out. Good luck!

If I had APs and could take the "extra" trip later in the year without the cost of tickets I would switch to a value at the end of my stay.

Also, as previously stated, there are often good discounts on rooms with the AP (sometimes up to 40% off).

If it was me, and I didn't have APs, then I wouldn't worry too much about the points because going back and having to buy tickets (not to mention transportation) could get costly.

I am going to get an AP when I go down in June (great deal with DVC discount) because a friend and I are going this December - staying at AKV . . . but if I save the points on this vacation, I could work in another trip in September for only airfare and food for myself (I would go with another friend - poor hubby). I am going to seriously look into this option.

Thanks for all the great responses. I figured most people would say I was silly and just use the points - that's what they are for. :goodvibes

There are often bigger discounts than AAA and expect more in the next few months. You usually don't have to have the AP when you make a reservation, only be able to produce it (or a voucher) on check in.

We stayed at POP last summer for free dining for 3 days, then moved to SSR. My kids 6,6, 10 loved POP and did not want to leave--of course, they loved SSR, as well.
If you want to save the points (and I would), then consider it a little adventure--I would go to a park most of the day--as you don't have all the amenities at the Value--but your 8 yr old will like the pool just fine. If you hate it--then you know to spend the extra points next time. My ONLY complaint was food court a bit crowded (but it was free dining) and POP walls were paper thin and I am a light sleeper--otherwise, for $82 a night---what a super deal! You could also splurge a bit and get a moderate--more amenities, fridge, and all pools have slide. Elaine

It's worth it to this family to stay put and use the points. Often we will have three or four weekend nights for our trips. And we usually stay in one bedrooms.
