We are buying a bumper hitch camper. My question is... Are we allowed to "double ball"? can we hook up a small trailer for the golf cart behind the camper. I belive the camper we are looking at is 32'. Is this allowed in all states? we would be coming from Indiana. Thanks all!

No, it's not allowed in Florida. I know it is allowed in Indiana.

Also, you'd have to consider the overall length. For instance, in Florida, the overall combined length of truck and trailer cannot exceed 65 feet. Other states have different lengths.

Thank you for your quick reply! Our truck is a 4 dr dually, plus that camper would make it a long setup!! These are some of the things we have to consider when we are buying this camper. Dh says golf cart will fit in the back of the bed of the truck, but that would make me a nervous wreck coming from Indiana. Thanks for the link! that will help alot

Most states that do permit double towing ,the first unit usally has to be a 5th wheel or a goose neck. Check on RV.net there are a lot of post on this issue in the 5th wheel section,

We have a fifth wheel and I had a rack built on the back to haul the Golf cart. Like any trailer you run into problems ( squirrley ) with alot of weight in the back. It's not so bad and I will be working to correct it ( first trip is always to work out what the bugs are ).If you look at the thread trip report to follow PICTURES you will see what we did. The pictures are not based around the rack but it is in there.

Mike how is the trailer doing with the cart on back? I'm working on my platform design now to haul an extra 4 wheeler as I only have enough room for two in the garage. I'm going to do the Reese Hitch type slide in brackets with the wheel rails mounted to that. Don't really need a tray just the rails for the tires.

Back on topic, you cannot haul 2 trailers in FL or GA. I called the highway patrol in both states this week because we're going to a place called Durhamtown to ride 4 wheelers Veterans Day weekend and the answer was no. Even though I've seen it done even at the fort it's not legal. What it takes to get pulled over I'm not sure. I would attempt it, but I'm thinking if we were involved in an accident my insurance wouldn't pay the claim so I'm going to go a different route.

Without going into to much detail I work for,,,,,,, The Florida Department of Transportation. While I do not work with the people that will pull you over, they check our trucks from time to time and I asked them about this. I was told two trailers are bad but, a setup like I have is acceptable.So far it has worked well for me but, I need to reduce the weight a little.If I get over 55 I start to get a little squirrely. Not enough to make me nervous but, enough to make me want to improve the situation. I don't take chances with my girls in the truck. I think a 4-wheeler( 750 ?? ) is lighter than an electric cart( 900 ??? ) so you may not notice a difference.Then again, I could be just some government worker passing the buck...

You know we were considering doing the same thing. We had a travel trailer for a few years. But we ended up putting our golf cart in the bed of the truck. It just fit. We had to leave the tailgate down. Then we got an extension for the hitch.

So anyway, when our camper got destroyed and we went looking at new ones, we decided to buy a class c. Now we tow the golf cart behind. We went to the keys in August and even pulled our boat behind.

I'm fairly sure that is the correct you can't legally tow any doubles anywhere in the US with bumper only configuration and a bunch of states don't allow doubles period.

Just having a double trailer will get you pulled over in Florida. If the Highway Patrol sees you they will pull you over and make you unhook the last trailer and if you have no legal way to tow it you will have to call a tow truck to pull it. I learned this from a cop at my university who used to be a Highway Patrolman.

I wouldn't want to tow a double trailer anyway. With the length and two turning points it would be very hard to manuver, especially off the Interstate, and impossible to back up.

Have you looked at the toy hauler trailers?

We had a TT and dually for years. Always put the golf cart in the bed of the truck. Securely tied it down so that it couldn't move forward or backward. This would be so much safer than an additional trailer!

Double trailers are not legal in Georgia and a lot of people drive through Ga to get to Fla.

Shortly after I posted this, we ended up buying a 34 ft Crossroads Crusier 5th wheel. Bunkbeds are over the hitch, and the boys are loving that. So we will have to see what happens with the golf cart. Im already itching to take the new camper to FW!!!!

As for me, we also put the golf cart in the back of the truck. But we're already looking at toy haulers for our next purchase. The toy haulers are finally looking more like a family RV inside than just some race-themed trailer.
