Is this a regional thing?

When I've read the DIS lately, there has been one thing I've noticed from time to time and it confuses me. I was taught that "an" is the correct word used before a word beginning with a vowel. However, I've been seeing "and" being used instead. At first I thought it was a typo, but would notice it throughout a post, and by various people. Example: "We saw an acrobat at the circus", but some people write, "We saw and acrobat at the circus". Generally, I see that those who use "and" are from the south. That's sort of what made me ponder if it's a regional term used.

I am from the south and I have never used And like that, we are taught an is used before a vowel so I don't know why people are using it.

We do have different ways of saying things and doing things but this isn't one of them.

I think typo, for some reason "because" gets me, when typing I almost always type "becuase", for some reason, it is just the way my fingers want to go, I have to correct it every time.

Of course not. The rule is that you use "an" before a vowel SOUND. That means you should sometimes use "an" when the word does not start with a vowel. For example: She has an M.A. degree.

No, it is a bad grammar thing.

No, it is a bad grammar thing.

Yup - like the fact that half or more posters obviously do not know when to use their vs. there.

Drives me crazy, but I avoid pointing it out in their threads because I don't like to hurt feelings.
