Hey guys... my boyfriend, myself and one of our best friends are planning a trip to disney soon. since we are college students with a very tight budget we are looking for ways to cut corners but still have the disney experience. we are going to stay at all star most of the trip and then go to a nicer hotel fpr the last 1 or 2 nights.
we had thought about getting/bringing microwave popcorn and raman noodles... there is a microwave in the food court we can use... is this a good idea or are we going to be shunned? :) don't want to make any faux pas' but still looking for good ideas on how to save money. if you can help please do so!!!

I don't think you will be shunned and it is a great way to save money. Have fun!!!!

Disnee Dad Says..................................Buy a $10 hot pot. It holds about 2 quarts and plugs into a wall socket.
Will boil water if you need it,(cup of noodles), or just put 2 cups of water in for each ramen package you want to cook.
Can also heat chili, or beef stew etc., you just need to stir alot because the heating element is on the bottom and will burn the bottom food and not heat the top unless it is mixed.
Ya want a cheap dinner? Boil up a pound of pasta in the hot pot, put on a paper plate or two. Drain the hot pot. Put in 1/2 jar of Ragu, Hunts or other spag sauce. Stir, when it starts to bubble put the pasta back in and mix well. In two minutes you have a hot pot of pasta! Collect those free packets of pamesan cheese at pizza places to pour on top!
Buy a beat up used toaster for a couple bucks, then make toast or muffins for breakfast, at your leisure.

Why wouldn't you be able to ask for cups of boiling water from different food vendors? And, there has got to be a microwave available - just ask. Adventures can be fun.

Hey - don't worry what people say. Just because you're clever enough to eat to live vs. live to eat - you'll have more fun. When you're old like us you'll have great stories to tell. You'll probably have late night cravings to drive your Lexus/Porsche to get noodles and popcorn but you'll have great memories!

All Star has all you need in the food court. No need to smell up your room or try to figure out dish washng in a motel room. They have nice hot water all ready for you, in the drink area, and a microwave and toaster to cook food. Just bring your own paper bowls and plastic forks. The food court is all set up for cooking and eating..even if you don't buy from them.
You'll see many families doing the same thing, and if you ask a food court manager, they'll tell you to help yourself to the micro and/or toaster. The toasters are usually put away after breakfast.

We did bring popcorn one year, but they do sell it there as well....I think it was .99 a bag. We used the toaster for a bagel one morning (we bought it there). I think a hot pot is a great idea if you are planning on doing a lot of your own snacks. I have used one of those coffee cup things (don't know what they are called..it's a coil thing. haven't seen them for a while) for hot choc and coffee and instant soup in my room when I was traveling alone for business.

ITA, and it makes no sense to smell up the room for the next occupants.

thank you guys!!!! we are flying but we figured raman and popcorn is small enough to stuff in the suitcases... :)

thanks again!!

I don't know about the popcorn and the microwave. It's been awhile since I've stayed there, but I think the Allstars have coffee makers in the room? You can brew some hot water for your noodles in the coffee makers (I'd just use coffee cups to catch the hot water instead of the coffee pot).

Why don't you save the money on the room cost by staying at the All stars the whole time? That way you can eat some real food. The All stars aren't bad and if you are on a tight budget then a stay in a "nicer" hotel wont benefit you, you can't eat at the "nicer" restaurant, etc. You're not going to be eating popcorn and Raman noodles the entire time are you? That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

There are no coffee pots in any of the rooms at the Disney Hotels that I am aware of.

on cheap eats to do in your room. I also agree with those who say not to bring things to cook in your room with. That's a personal decision. The thread I'm referring to has many alternatives and things that are inexpensive. Hope it helps!

They are at the CBR. They are also available upun request at most other WDW resorts.

Very good point.

We take a cooler and fix sandwiches and sometimes have breakfast (cereal and pastries) in the room. As already mentioned, there is a microwave, toaster, and hot water in the All-Star food court along with napkins and utensils.

All DVC resorts have coffee makers.

At the all star resorts, there is a micorwave and hot water from the coffee machine right on the bevarage island. The cast members wont yell at you for useing them (unless u make a mess ;) )

I'm not a student, but my tight budget would not stretch to staying onsite. I’ve booked a room at Comfort Inn, Lake Buena Vista – very near to Downtown Disney. They have free buses to the Disney Parks and all rooms have fridge, microwave and coffee maker. Plus there is a free continental breakfast.

I know it is not onsite, but compare the maths in column A to column B and see which one suits you best.

Whichever route you take, have fun.
:)

Now that I think about it. I wouldn't want to be in the room after someone cooked in it all week!!! Depending on what you cook that is. I can see snacks (apples, cereal bars, etc) Do you really want to cook on vacation? I think I'd vote to stay off site you could probably save up to half on your rooms, which would give you more $ for food and snacks.

You will have a good time, and I can tell you from experience that the Raman noodles (Mr. Noodles here in Canada) were a big hit with my kids. It was a break from all the food court food. And the popcorn was my treat! Enjoy!
