$398 Walmart special buy

250 GB hard drive

wireless enabled
Windows 7 home premium

only 250 GB hard drive is my only concern. Though likely enough for his needs.
I just bought an hp at Staples last week w/ 500GB for $400 and it had a $50 rebate.
If you are looking to buy for Xmas, probably as good a deal as you might find.
I would look at Staples, Office Max, Office Depot ads before buying.

apparently this one is normally almost 900.00!!

PP's suggestion is better than the laptop you are looking at. Costs less, bigger hard drive. I have a "low-end" Toshiba and I do like it a lot, but I have two big complaints, the power cord is terribly cheap and shorted quickly and the case is not very sturdy--the port you plug the power cord in broke off after only a few months.

My BF has a "middle of the road" HP laptop and it is soooo much more sturdy in construction than my Toshiba. Like I said, I'd go with the HP, but if you must get the Toshiba it has been a good running machine despite the case not being so strudy.

Not sure where you heard the 900 figure, but it generally retails for $350, which puts best buy's price spot on:
http://www.bbspot.com/reviews/hp-g42-415dx-laptop-with-an-amd-athlon-ii

(end of the review, "You can find the HP G42-415DX laptop for around $350.")

My recommendation would be:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Asus+-+...rown/1257145.p?id=1218243226535&skuId=1257145

You get same memory, larger hard drive, and the intel processor (although it's a pentium) rather than the amd athlon processor. $50 cheaper. I realize the online one is backordered, but perhaps a B&M store may have it in stock.

Asus isn't a well known brand, but they're growing in recognition; they're a primary manufacturer of computers, unlike most of the well known brands. I'm looking at a lenovo or an asus to replace my HP that I'm using and I can't wait to throw out the top floor window into a snowbank.... or maybe pavement so it will smash..... or maybe drive over with my car... hm..... (yeah, I'm disappointed with my HP).

FWIW, my niece has a toshiba - I though she liked it but found out otherwise. I heard from a salesperson that toshiba's customer service is terrible, but that's second hand info so take it with a grain of salt.

For our money 15 inches is the absolute minimum for a screen size. When they go below that everything shrinks down to match and if it's your primary computer you will go nuts tapping on those tiny keys and squinting at the screen. The OP's computer had a decent sized screen and since he just wants to websurf and play games hard drive space isn't as important as a good display.

Lindsmom, I've had many IBM/Lenovo laptops over the years (my college required their use) and they were awesome! Extremely sturdy, ran wonderfully. They are a little pricier though, so I've switch to other PC brands since graduating. Asus is also very intriging for the aspects you mentioned, and I also think you get a little more bang for your buck because they spend more money in development than advertising than the big brands.

My newest laptop is a middle of the road Samsung. Jury is still out on this one, Ive had it for about three weeks. So far so good. I decided to go with Samsung because they seem to be on the cutting edge in all electronic gadgetry right now. I also choose it because of a massive post-thanksgiving discount. My favorite feature is the HDMI output so I can watch Netflicks and other streaming media and BlueRay.

Thank you everyone for the help it is appreciated. :)
