Is this a crazy idea or where to stay last night with 6am flight home

We once did a red-eye from Disneyland back to Vermont. Went straight from closing of the park to the airport. Clothes were still damp from Splash mountain. I rarely sleep on planes. We wanted every last second in the park.
I really have no desire to do that again, it really beat me down for a full week after.

We (myself and 2 dd's age 15 and 16) have a 6am flight home and I am trying to decide what to do the last night in Disney. We have reservations at California Grill at 9:50pm so by the time we finish dinner we will only have 3-4 hours until we should leave to the airport. Is it worth getting a room at All Stars for $150ish and get 3am ME or just go get a Dole Whip at Captain Cooks and hang around Poly lobby until 3:30 am and uber over to airport with no sleep? Or last choice is cancel California Grill reservation and get a real nights sleep before flight home?

Seeing that you will likely not be able to get an earlier Cali Grill reservation and it is an amazing restaurant i would keep the ADR. If you dine and finish say about 12-12:30. you could get a room but really by the time you get to the resort you will likely only have 2 hours before ME pick up. So not really worth getting a room for that amount of time. I would either hang out at the Poly and then uber or van service to the airport at that time which would have you getting there about 1 or 2am. Hanging there and just get through security when it opens - or if it is open go through it - not sure if it is always open. But when it is open there are always long lines so why not get through all that mess and wait for your flight.

You have older kids and although you all will be dead to the world i guess it will be a fun way to end your trip.

I love California Grill but in this case I’d cancel it unless I could find a much earlier reservation.

We're from the West Coast, so our flight often leaves around 630am. That 3am pick up is pretty brutal. We always call it an early night, so I'd see if you can move your reservation earlier or opt for another day.

I would cancel the late dinner reservation, make an earlier dinner reservation, keep the room at All Stars for $150. Highly doubt you will get a room at Hyatt for less than $200, it tends to be pricey. Uber to airport, will be quick at that hour of morning, security should be very manageable.

I would cancel CG, do something else special earlier, and get more sleep.

Actually, I won’t schedule a flight that early, but if I had to for some reason I would never plan a late night before it. I know lots of people do, though. I would do it to leave for vacation and get there early, but never to end it!

Flight schedules can be weird with certain airlines. In many cases I find it impossible to find a flight to or from MCO without having to schedule a ridiculously early or ridiculous late flight even for a journey that's only supposed to take a few hours.

As for the OP, I was thinking of consulting with the kids but I guess it makes more sense to keep trying and see if you can find an earlier ADR. If all else fails, you're better off just taking an Uber to MCO right after your dinner and resting there. Though on my last trip to WDW, we had an 8pm flight home but was surprised to find MCO a ghost town.

There are much (MUCH) less expensive airport hotels that are a 3-5 minute complimentary shuttle ride away. DW is not a late night person and we crashed at the embassy suites upon arrival and it worked out fabulously. The Hyatt is most convenient obviously but is often pretty pricey.

I'd check and see whats available by MCO, Uber to it, and crash for a few hours. They'll get you to the airport quickly and in plenty of time.

EDIT: probably too late for OP, but still glad to share the idea for others that may be interested :)

Maybe I’m missing something, but if the OP booked a room at All-stars they WOULD have a reservation and would be able to use DME. She said that if they didn’t get a room they would Uber to the airport.

Exactly. They said "Is it worth getting a room at All Stars for $150ish and get 3am ME or just go get a Dole Whip at Captain Cooks and hang around Poly lobby until 3:30 am and uber over to airport with no sleep?"

Although I've never gotten a bargain there, many others have. FWIW

I would opt for a much earlier dinner (maybe HDDR?) and head to the airport hotel.

Travel days are EXHAUSTING and for us being tired would just magnify the exhaustion and we’d be beyond miserable. Hard pass.

But of course you know your family best. My DD would not be able to go to school the next day. Even if she slept on the plane.

I would not be able to go to work under those situation. Shoot, my DH put his foot down on late returns if anyone needs to either go to work or school the following day Never mind going all day with no sleep and heading out for a 6AM flight.

I would change the flight time to later in the day if possible!

I agree. The OP mentioned their flight is only 3 hrs, so it isn't like they are traveling internationally where the choices might be limited. Most airlines charge to change tickets, so the best plan would be to decide on the flight that makes the most sense when first booking your reservations. If you live in a small town, you might have fewer choices for airlines. Perhaps check other nearby airports to see if other choices are available at a more reasonable hour.

It depends on the destination. My nieces flew into Montreal. They had a great Saturday evening flight back home booked, however it was canceled at the last minute, and they were schedule to fly out at 11 AM. Certainly not as problematic as the OP's flight but way earlier. WEll that stinks! Find a better one. Nope, the airline only files out three days a week. It was that flight. Period. I realize that this was an international flight, but depending on the home airport the situation could be very much the same.

Oh my. If the kids are going back to school the next day, definitely opt for sleep. Every time we go, we need a full day after the trip to just relax, and that's even on a full night's sleep.

Get a room at airport and get some sleep. That’s me though and I get crabby without sleep.
This is my thought too. You can do your late meal at CG or not, and uber to MCO. I spent a night there when my flight was cancelled and recall it being pretty nice (a Marriot, I think?)

I also vote for an early dinner (4:00-5:00 pm) and a room at or near the airport. The hanging out in the Poly lobby idea, with my luggage, at some crazy point in the middle of the night, sounds to me like an awful nightmare.
