Is there such a thing as an extra tall baby gate?

DH and I want to refinish the wood floors in the living room. But we have a dog that has the run of the house (we don't crate her as she is well behaved). The varnish will take days to set and we have to keep her out of there while it dries.

She a large dog, around 60 pounds and quite the jumper. She'd be able to jump a normal baby gate like it wasn't even there (I've seen her do it!). Anyone know if they make extra tall gates? We plan on having kids, so they'll come in handy again some day! :teeth:

I just mounted ours up higher for our german shepherd (large gap by the floor) because she couldn't scooch under. We had her so well trained that I could just prop it up and she wouldn't touch it (one in another room) and one day I swung the one in the utility room closed (like a door) but forgot to attach it at the other side. She was in there for a few hours and if her tail had brushed against it, it would have swung open............she never bothered it.

I'd thought about stacking two, but we have three doorways, so that'd be six gates if we'd double them up, I figured it would be cheaper to buy three tall ones if I could find them. And placing them higher up may not work, she loves to scooch under the love seat, it's amazing how flat she can make herself.

She's so curious that she'll definatly try to push on the gate to see if it will knock over. She's part boarder collie, you see, way too smart for her own good. She knows how to open fence gates, she's an expert "counter surfer", and I've seen her open a snap down garbage can without making a sound. She's well behaved, but only when the house is properly dog proofed!

Since she's part border.........just "explain" to her that you are re-doing the floors!

If she was pure border.........she would have refinished the floors herself, rearranged the furniture, cleaned the closets, taken out the garbage ;)

The Foster and Smith pet catalog has axtra tall gates. Good luck with the floors and your pooch!

What about checking with friends that have kids, they may have a gate or two that you could borrow. Goodwill or a consignment shop might have some deals on used gates, too.

Babies R Us has extra tall gates, but I think they are a little pricey....I would check consignement shops for a cheaper used one

I think the tallest gate I have is about 40 inches and it has to be anchored into the door frame with screws anyway. I think a 60lb dog could probably jump it without much problem. Toby used to jump 6 foot fences.

All those pressure gates I've seen are much shorter. Our tall gate still wasn't enough to contain my Houdini-toddler 3 year old.

We finally just installed a screen door on his bedroom to contain him at night.

Yeah, she'd smile and nod her head, then roll over the new floor the first time I'm not looking. :teeth: She's smart but doesn't listen so well...I adopted her as an adult so I didn't get to train her as a puppy. It's easier to just keep trouble away from her than train her not to get into trouble.

Oh, how very true!

Try Dr. Foster and Smith's catalog. They have a ton of dog supplies. There's also another catalog.. I think it's called Care A Lot, that has gates.

Since you won't be able to go in there either ewhile the varnish is drying, how about just pushing a dresser or other large object in front of the doorways. It will save you the money.

I got mine there too. Believe it or not it was for a 4 lb Yorkie who could leap over about ANYTHING. :lmao:

LOL, my first thought was how tall IS your baby that a standard gate would not work?

Sorry, ignore me... I have no answers, only questions.
