Is there Gluten in Whiskey? Sept trip: 9 days, 3 boys, 1 urgent care visit NEWx2 11/7

Nice that you got to check out Riverside, it looks so pretty.

:lmao: at the not yelling at each other when you got lost. DH and I are really bad about turning on each other when we got lost.

Can't wait to hear your take on the Halloween Party.

We often yell at each other when we get lost. Okay, mostly I yell. I was very proud of the restraint I showed, especially since it was, of course, ALL DAVE'S FAULT we got lost

POR is so pretty! :lovestruc I hope you guys love staying there!
Sounds like Planet Hollywood was a little bit of a let down. I've only been to one once, and that was enough for me.
Can't wait to hear about the Halloween party!

I wasn't really expecting great things, so it was fine...it was kind of too bad this wound up being our last table service of the trip, though!

Thanks for sharing the pics of POR as I am hoping to stay here on a future trip as well. Lol at not yelling at each other when getting lost - that sure is a result! :cool1:

Oh no on PH not being very accomodating over your requests. I have also heard good things of the place.

POR looked really nice--I'm excited about trying somewhere new after 3 times at POP!

I'm excited about the POR pics! We are staying there when we go in March. Mom and I stayed years ago when it was Dixie Landings, but my dh and kids haven't ever been there. Looks so peaceful.
Too bad PH wasn't a bit nicer.

POR certainly seemed peaceful compared to Pop! You'll have to report back and tell us all about it after you go in March :)

...I have another installment ready to go, but it will probably be tonight before I can get the pictures uploaded and post it.

Never mind! I have it ready now!

Chapter 41: Downtown Disney

We still had awhile before it was time to head over to the Halloween party, and I still had that gift card to spend (and a rapidly dwindling amount of time for souvenir shopping), so we spent a little while shopping in Downtown Disney.

First we went to Once Upon a Toy:

IMG_1445.jpg

The kids found the video games and immediately started playing Epic Mickey....which, you know, they can do at home. A woman who was passing by asked us what the game was all about, and I tried to explain it, but I fear I made it sound....lame. Or confusing. Or something. We were a little disappointed with the lack of Epic Mickey merchandise in the stores (other than the game itself). I'm not sure if this is just how things are for all but the most iconic games, or if Epic Mickey has not done as well as hoped. My kids like it, anyway.

(I just did some googling. Word is there are rumors at least of Epic Mickey 2. So I guess it hasn't done TOO horribly).

IMG_1446.jpg

While the kids were occupying themselves with Epic Mickey, I made my first gift card souvenir purchase:

IMG_1448.jpg

Now I can listen to the music from The Haunted Mansion and Carousel of Progress anytime I want!

Okay—honestly? This sounded more appealing to me while I was actually AT Disney World than it has since. We do not keep it on a non-stop loop in the car or anything. But it's still fun to have. I suspect it will be in heavier rotation when we get close to next year's trip.

Then one more trip to Babycakes to pick up breakfast for the next morning.

And then! Back to Pop to take a short break and get ready for MNSSHP! Gus was Mickey, and Milo was Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. Ari would agree to nothing more festive than a Halloween t-shirt.

Chapter 42: MNSSHP, part 1

We drove over to the Magic Kingdom and parked in the brand new Zurg section:

IMG_1473.jpg

Can you spot what's wrong with this picture? We DROVE over to the Magic Kingdom....

I did not yet spot the problem myself, at the time. Back to that later.

We hopped on the monorail (another bit of foreshadowing) and got to the gates at pretty much exactly four. We rock!

IMG_1483.jpg

I guess he decided the t-shirt wasn't enough of a costume at the last minute and decided to pop on his sorcerer Mickey ears, too.

IMG_1488.jpg

We walked right in, got our wristbands and candy bags, and headed off to Tomorrowland to hit some rides before the party started.

IMG_1490.jpg

We hadn't done the Laugh Floor yet, so we went there first. We submitted two jokes while we waited in line, but neither one got picked. This is a little remarkable, because they were the funniest jokes EVER. Do you want to hear them? Good.

First joke:
Q: Why did the banana go to the doctor?
A: Because he wasn't peeling well.

Ha! I'll give you some time to compose yourself after that one.

Okay.

Ready?

Second joke:
Q: Why did the chicken cross the Mobius strip?
A: To get to the same side.

Can you guess which member of our family THAT one comes from? Hint: it's the one who's a math teacher.

Someone from our county did get her joke picked, though, so we were at least glad to see a hometown girl make good.

The Laugh Floor makes me nervous. Remember the hate to draw attention to myself thing? Yeah. I'm always worried they'll put my picture up there...like me with a caption underneath: “TAKES PICTURES OF ALL HER FOOD IN RESTAURANTS!” The first time I ever saw the show, I was just about to nurse then baby Gus when I realized what the set up was and had to change plans really quickly. Sorry, kid: you'll have to stay hungry for awhile. I'm all for advocating for breastfeeding, but I don't so much want to be televised while I do it.

But none of us has ever been on the big screen. This time the theater was maybe 2/3 of the way full and we still didn't make it up there. Maybe they can sense my fear.

After the Laugh Floor show passed without incident, we went to Space Mountain:

IMG_1491.jpg

And then we finally got to ride the tea cups. An observation: taking pictures of another tea cup while on a tea cup makes one really dizzy.

IMG_1504.jpg

IMG_1507.jpg

IMG_1511.jpg

By now it had started to rain a little, so it seemed like a perfect time to head over to Columbia Harbor House for another round of the chicken fingers.

IMG_1518.jpg

IMG_1526.jpg

Only they were closed!

Wha?! How did I not know THIS was going to happen? I knew it was closed during the party itself, but I figured it stayed opened up until then. But, no. Closed at 5, and it was now something like 5:30. A Cast Member standing out front told us all about it.

“You have to stand here just to tell everyone that the restaurant's closed?” Dave asked her. “I'm sorry.”

This wasn't good. It was raining, so we didn't really want to walk anywhere else, AND nowhere else in the park had the GF chicken tenders that the kids were already expecting. While we were standing there trying to figure out what to do, another woman came up and was dismayed to find out CHH was closed.

“Do you know if anywhere else sells the gluten-free chicken fingers?” she asked the poor CM. I got kind of excited about our shared predicament, and attempted to bond with this woman over GF chicken fingers. She seemed to want nothing to do with this, though, and walked off grumpily, rejecting my offer to let her look at my cool GF app. Oh well.

We finally decided to go to Pinocchio Village Haus. I can't really remember what the rational behind this was. I think it had a lot to do with not wanting to walk all the way back to Cosmic Ray's. So then, at Pinnochio Village Haus, I.....ate gluten. The only gluten-free options there were Amy's pizzas or macaroni and cheese. And I really didn't want either of those things. So I got the cruddy chicken nuggets. The kids all ordered macaroni and cheese. This was our first experience with some GF and some regular food orders, and...I'm glad we didn't do that very often. It took a LOT longer to get the kids' meals than mine (I think Dave decided to not eat and just grab a snack later). But I didn't want to eat before they had food, so my food sat there getting cold. And if the chicken nuggets are kinda yucky when they're hot, they're REALLY bad when they're cold.

The upside of the meal was that they gave us tons of cookies. I'm not sure why...I think the manager felt bad about the wait or something, so she gave us extras. At any rate, this was our first encounter with the French Meadow chocolate chip cookies, and they were really good. I liked them a lot more than the brownies.

I'll leave off here for now, on a bit of a down note. The party got much better from here, I promise!

Why do kids always want to stop and play with stuff they already have? I'll never understand that :confused3

I totally get what you're saying about the CD. While you're at Disney it's so magical that you assume you'll want to be surrounded by it all the time, but then you go home... This trip I picked up some PJs. Was very pleased with the purchase since I'm always in the mood for PJs.

Great pictures on the teacups (even if it did make you dizzy).

Can't wait to hear more about the party. There's no fall break for the schools here, so I doubt we'll ever get there for it. I'm living vicariously through the TRs. :lmao:

I LOVE the boys costumes. I have Epic Mickey but haven't played it in months... oh to be a child without adult responsibilities, right? Can't wait to hear about your party... your review wasn't spectacular but I've never even stepped foot in Pinnochio Village Haus and I really want to give it a try. If only to wave at the people on It's a Small World!

I remember our first trip, I was convinced I wanted to Mickey-fy my entire kitchen--dishtowels, potholders, utensils, everything! I'm glad I resisted THAT impulse!

Too bad you don't have a fall break :(. Our county is weird....there are only a few counties in the state that have fall breaks, but we're lucky to live in one of them.

Thanks!

I didn't talk at all about the atmosphere in PVH, but it actually was pretty pleasant. A lot bigger than I expected. All the tables overlooking Small World were taken, though :(

:lmao:

I loved this. :upsidedow

thanks! Too bad YOU don't get to pick the jokes for the Laugh Floor

:goodvibesCatching back up here!

I didn't realize Planet Hollywood even HAD a gluten free menu! The desserts do look good, it's a real treat when a restaurant has house made GF cookies though. Usually the boxed ones are a tad crunchy (as in so rock hard I'm going to chip a tooth!) unless they're the Enjoy Life ones.

I love your two boys' costumes! My DD's are very much into Epic Mickey too so they know who Oswald is. They look darling in them!

We've never done the Laugh Floor either, I really don't know why.:confused3 It sounded fun though! And I soooo understand your feelings about taking food pics! The first couple of times I did it, DH looked at me like was doing something highly improper! He asked me why I would want pictures of food! Now though, he doesn't bat an eye and knows not to eat any of his food till I snap a pic! Haven't I trained him well?

Ack! CHH was closed? Ugh, that would've annoyed me if I'd planned on eating there. Because, let's face it, eating out GF is a bit of a challenge anyway but when you go to all the trouble of planning it out at Disney...well, I'd have been peeved. Though I can't imagine why that lady wouldn't have wanted to share your snazzy GF app? I'd have loved that. Some people are strange.

Sounds like PVH was a tad underwhelming. I'm not a fan of the Amy's pizza either, it never tastes cooked all the way. Sorry to hear your meal was a let down. But I agree with you on the French Meadow cookies! They are good, so are the brownies but I know what you mean when you say you ate them alot at Disney. It always helped when the restaurant warmed them and put a big ol' dollop of ice cream on top!

Great update, looking forward to the next one. Thanks so much for sharing.:goodvibes

They don't have one printed out or anything, but they definitely seemed to know the routine with the chef coming out and everything. I was pretty pleasantly surprised about the cookies!

I think CHH might close at 5 every day? I'm not sure....really, it was my fault for not researching it better--we totally could have gotten there before 5 if we'd known!

Chapter 43: MNSSHP part 2

It was still raining some when we came out of Pinocchio Village Haus. By now it was just past seven, so the party had officially started. We walked back over to the Haunted Mansion and saw these guys:

IMG_1529.jpg

My kids wouldn't pose for a picture with them, though. Oh well. We rode Haunted Mansion, of course, because you have to do that during the Halloween party.

Then we walked over to Frontierland and rode Splash Mountain. It had stopped raining at this point, but the sky looked like this:

IMG_1535.jpg

IMG_1546.jpg

It looked even more ominous by the time we got off Splash Mountain, complete with flashes of lightning off in the distance. I checked the weather on my phone and there was a “severe weather advisory” in the area. This didn't sound good. We were really worried at this point that either it would start storming heavily and ruin the evening or we'd all get struck by lightning. But neither thing happened! The sky kept looking like it was going to open up on us at any second, but it never did. It turned out to be a lovely evening, weather-wise, after the early rain.

After Splash, we passed the giant line of people waiting to see the Seven Dwarfs, but we bypassed it and got in the line for candy instead.

IMG_1547.jpg

I love how the SM fastpass machines have little themed covers to wear!

IMG_1550.jpg

IMG_1552.jpg

While we were in that line, we ran into the ONE GUY the whole night who recognized Milo's costume.

After candy, Dave was very nervous about all the lightning and wanted to find an inside ride, so we went over to ride Pirates and get some more candy.

IMG_1558.jpg

IMG_1560.jpg

By now it was just before the first parade, and we thought about grabbing a space for it so we'd have it out of the way early. But we quickly realized we weren't going to be able to find a good spot so late, so we crossed back across to Frontierland and went over to Big Thunder Mountain instead.

IMG_1572.jpg

Uhh...I don't know when this happened. They had little games set up for the kids in the gift shop after Splash Mountain

Last year when we did the Halloween party, we rode Big Thunder Mountain 4 times in a row without stopping and regretted it deeply. But it was really cool to ride it in the dark at least ONE time, so we wanted to be sure to do that. But as we walked up to it, we could see that it was closed and heard the CM telling people it was because of the lightning in the area. Dave wanted to go up and ask him when it might open again. I wanted Dave to leave the poor guy alone, as I figured he had no idea when it would reopen. But just as Dave was walking up, the CM's phone rang and, after talking to whoever it was, he told us that they were reopening right then. Just for us! Well, he didn't say that it was just for us. But we were the first people in line, so it seemed like it.

Next we went back over to Tomorrowland to hit a couple of rides and get some more candy before Hallowishes. Oh! This is when I had the Really Awkward interaction with a CM. We were in line for Buzz, and we had an elaborate plan worked out for who was going to ride with whom. Milo wanted to ride by himself, I think because he found the idea of no competition appealing. And then I was going to ride with Ari, and Gus was going to ride with Dave, but only if Dave promised to lose.

Okay, so we got up there, and Milo stepped off onto the walkway to get on the ride. But just then, there was...something going on up ahead...some guy had gotten out of his vehicle for some reason and was walking on the walkway to get to a different one—not really clear on what was going on. But, at any rate, The CM next to the walkway put her arm down, as if to indicate that people should stop getting on the moving part. But she didn't say anything. I was JUST about to step onto the moving walkway, and her hand was actually behind me. I guess maybe she assumed I was riding with Milo and would keep going to get in with him. But I WASN'T riding with Milo. And her hand was in between me and Ari. But, while I wasn't riding with Milo, I didn't like how he was rapidly disappearing out of my sight (not in any rational way; I mean—there wasn't much of anywhere he could GO...I guess it was just kind of an automatic “eek! My kid is leaving!” instinct kicking in).

It all happened very fast. I looked at the CM, but she still wouldn't make eye contact or say anything, so I started to step off onto the walkway, and Ari was following me. Then she barked, “Hold ON!” at me, but by then there was kind of no going back. Anyway, so there it was. I was terribly embarrassed that a cast member was mad at me, but I was also annoyed with her for letting my eight year old go off without me and then not offering any explanation about what was going on. Ah well. It all worked out fine. The guy who was causing the problem got everything worked out somehow or other, and there were only one or two ride thingies separating me and Milo.

After Buzz we went on Space Mountain again, and by then it was time to rush over to the hub for the fireworks.

I had this big plan to get to the Liberty Square side of the hub for the fireworks, so that we'd be well positioned to scope out a good parade spot afterward. We had waited a tad late to head over, but we made it through and wound up with a decent spot on the walkway to Liberty Square.

Confession: I've never seen all of Wishes (just caught parts of it on the way out of the park with sleepy children). So I don't have much to compare Hallowishes, too. But we really enjoyed it.

IMG_1602.jpg

IMG_1605.jpg

IMG_1609.jpg

IMG_1614.jpg

IMG_1615.jpg

This would be my best picture...if it weren't for that guy's big ol' HEAD!

Up next: the parade!

Sounds like you guys had great luck with the rides!

Such a weird interaction with the CM! Disney sets the bar so high, those awkward things really stick out. At Six Flags, that would be a really nice CM :lmao:

Great castle pictures! I love the one of your DS and DH watching. Sorry about the big head, but it's still a good pic :rotfl2:

Look what I'm doing here! I leave for Dollywood on Thursday, so I'm timing it perfectly to finish up Disney and then tack Dollywood onto the end!

Chapter 44: MNSSHP, part 3: I didn't have a very firm grasp of how long Hallowishes would last or how early we really needed to get a spot for the late parade. As it turned out, we found an excellent spot in Liberty Square (sitting on the wall sort of across from the Diamond Horseshoe) a full 45 minutes early, and there was no one else around for the first 15 minutes or so.

IMG_1617.jpg

We are all so excited about the parade!

IMG_1619.jpg

Once we secured the spot, we took turns running assorted errands with the kids to pass the time (problem with the late parade is that it's hard to keep the batteries in the ipods alive that long!). First we hit the candy line by the riverboat (which was right behind our parade spot). This was backed up with people just coming from the fireworks, so it was a pretty good time suck. We did bathroom breaks, and Dave grabbed some waters and snacks for everyone, and the time passed surprisingly quickly. Dave and I had realized we hadn't had any Mickey bars yet ourselves, so we got and ate those while the kids went through their candy and ate some.

And then the parade! I love the Boo to You parade. Even the kids like it, and you know how they feel about parades. But what's not to love about dancing gravediggers?!

I was kind of paranoid the whole time we were waiting that someone was going to, like, hit us over the head with bricks and steal our spot or something—so many horror stories have I read on the boards lately. But everything was very civil. Our wall spot was great, because the kids could stand up on the wall once people filled in in front of us and still see everything.

IMG_1621.jpg

IMG_1629.jpg

IMG_1630.jpg

IMG_1633.jpg

IMG_1640.jpg

IMG_1642.jpg

Dave HATES the Country Bear Jamboree. Like, really hates it. Like, he says, "you'd have to PAY me to get to me to watch the Country Bear Jamboree again." So when the kids saw this float they were all, "take a picture for Daddy!"

IMG_1659.jpg

I had kind of wanted to see the Villains show, but after the parade and fireworks I knew the kids were all done being spectators for the evening. So instead we went back to Tomorrowland (which is, I think, my favorite place to be during the Halloween party).

But on the way, we had to ride Dumbo, because we hadn't ridden it at all on this trip AND we'd missed it last year. The kids weren't thrilled about it, but they humored me.

IMG_1667.jpg

Look at Milo, back there (behind Ari and Dave) by himself again. He was feeling like a loner that night, I guess.

IMG_1673.jpg

IMG_1680.jpg

Projections on a construction wall were surprisingly entertaining for the kids

Then Space Mountain one more time. Then more candy. And then, to close out the night, one more spin on the Peoplemover.

IMG_1681.jpg

It was just past midnight by the time we got off the Peoplemover and headed out of the park with the throngs of people.
We got a little more candy right outside the gates and then.....

(foreshadowing finally pays off here)

...we spotted the line...oh, I'm sorry, I mean the ANGRY MOB...waiting for the ferry. Oh, right. No monorail after the parties. I knew this. But I completely and totally forgot. Even as we were walking out the gates, I forgot that the Ticket and Transportation Center even EXISTED. I was all, “oh, and we parked so close; we'll be to our car in just a couple of minutes! What a magical end to our night!”

But no. I have only myself to blame for this. I'm sure at some point in the trip planning process I had mentioned to Dave the big news about the reduced monorail hours, but I certainly never expected that HE would remember it. We should have taken the bus. Too late now.

Okay, so Ari does not do well with crowds. Tired Ari is especially bad with crowds. I'm not so great with them myself. They make us grumpy and short tempered. And a grumpy, short-tempered, exhausted ten year old combined with a grumpy, short-tempered, exhausted mother is a really bad combination. We did not behave well with each other while we waited for the ferry. I did not have the whole being ten thing to excuse my behavior, but I did apologize to him and pull myself together before we got on the ferry.

I had plenty of time in which to do this.

Now. If I were Disney World, and I had decided to shut down the monorail on the days when hordes of guests would be leaving the park, all at the same time, very late at night, I would probably throw a few extra CMs into the mix to handle the angry mob. I'm just saying.

Instead, we did not encounter a single CM until we were nearly through being a part of the angry mob. The way the ferry waiting area is set up is that there's a big open area to hold politely waiting guests or angry mobs, depending on the day, and then there's a smaller area, set off with a railing, for strollers and wheelchairs. But the angry mob did not care that the smaller area was for strollers and wheelchairs. Many members of the angry mob went through that line, where, in the fantasy Disney that I run, there would be a CM at the front making sure everyone getting in it actually had a stroller or a wheelchair (I would also make exceptions for people carrying sleeping, very big for their ages, five year olds. Ahem. Yes. This is the one time we wished we had a stroller for Gus. And that he wasn't big enough for Rock n' Roller Coaster after all).

What happened at real Disney World was that a whole bunch of the angry mob noticed that they could reach the front of the angry mob a lot faster if they took the wheelchair lane, and there was no one to say a word about it until they got to the very front of the wheelchair lane, where there were a couple of harried CMs telling everyone, “IF YOU DON'T HAVE A WHEELCHAIR OR A STROLLER, YOU MUST GO THROUGH THE TURNSTILES!” I have no clue how they tried to actually enforce that, though. I have a sneaking suspicion that no one who'd gone through the wheelchair line was actually sent all the way back to the beginning of the angry mob though.

I don't remember how long we waited for the ferry. I think it was....FOREVER. Or maybe half an hour or forty minutes.

While we were waiting, I was pretty sure the ferry was going to be completely packed with wall to wall people and probably sink, and I was trying to figure out how we were going to keep all three kids from drowning. But the ferry was surprisingly uncrowded once we got on. We went right up to the upper deck, and Dave even managed to find a bit of bench to sit on with Gus.

IMG_1685-1.jpg

Some of the angry mob was not placated by having finally gotten on the ferry. At one point a CM called down the stairs to one family that they needed to keep the stairs clear. Their kids were sitting on the steps. The mother screamed back, “Well, you should have the monorails open then!” and then barked at her kid, “Get off the steps!” The kid was back on the steps about 20 seconds later, and the poor CM pretended not to notice. Our family is so civilized that we only yelled at each other, though.

Once we finally got on the ferry, everyone was in much better spirits. I was worried there'd be a massive wait for a tram, but we walked right onto one and were in the car and back to Pop in no time. I think everyone manged to be asleep by 1:30 or so.

So. Not the best ending to the night. I have stretched the story out for dramatic effect, but, really, overall it was just an unpleasant blip in the otherwise lovely evening. It did tarnish the memory of the party more for the kids than for the grown-ups, though. None of them is eager to do another MNSSHP anytime soon.

Yikes! Sorry your night ended badly! I do not do well with crowds either, but I usually take it out on DH, DD usually get by unscathed. :lmao:

I don't know what they're thinking shutting the monorail down early-especially when guests are required to pay extra for the party. :sad2:

I enjoyed the for-dramatic-purposes-stretch. Can't wait to hear about Dollywood! :cool1::cool1::cool1:

Sounds like a great party night at MK except for the ferry incident. Thankfully it didn't rain again.
I can't wait to hear about Dollywood! I love Gatlinburg/PF. I haven't been to Dollywood in about 6 years or more so I can't wait to see pictures!

I love the costumes and MNSSHP pics.

Yay on BTMRR opening back up just for you! Oh no on the Buzz situation...am glad it all worked out in the end.

Oh I hope you get to watch the whole of Wishes as it is such an amazing show.

Chapter 10: Saturday, 9/16, Part 3: more Animal Kingdom
This is what Dave did in the evenings while I worked on my trip report notes: he's making a spreadsheet to record all the money we spent on stuff. We are two different kinds of geeky.[/B]

Joining in late :goodvibes

Sounds familiar! Joyce is always scribbling trip notes when we get back to the room--except this last trip where Joyce decided not to write a report because we weren't actually going to WDW...hence my TR. I'm busy organizing receipts together...though I didn't compile them in a spreadsheet until I got home :)

Phew, caught up! It was fun reading along!

After replying on one comment, I realized that I'd have a lot of individual comments over the next 15 pages, so here's one post of what I remember I was going to say:

* Loved all the picture comments..."Bunch of cars doing stunt things"...haha!
* Glad your waitress was looking out for you on the whiskey. Our Le Cellier water just accused us of being on a "fake honeymoon"...
* "Grow the chicken" :lmao:
* Can't wait to go on Star Tours! It opened a couple of weeks after we left in May, so we didn't get to go on it. DW is going with a friend this May, so she'll go on it, but I told her not to tell me about it until we go next October. It was hard to try to skim through those parts of your report :)

I'm sure I wanted to say more, but I was too late to the party to comment along the way. I'll keep up next time :goodvibes

Sigh...I am jealous of your MNSSHP time (minus the ferry wait). Ours was just not good. Not good at all. And I really wanted it to be wonderful. I shudder just thinking about it!

I remember those ominous clouds and lightning. We were at DTD that night and were trying to get back to the van before the bottom dropped out, which I don't think it ever did. Still, those clouds looked nasty!
