Folks,

I am a complete gardening NITWIT. Prob because I am allergic to virtually everything that grows in this hemisphere. DH on the other hand really enjoys it. We have 4 beautiful Peonies growing alongside our deck. Is there any (safe) way to divide them up, and transplant some to other locations? The are very hardy and strong, and have come up bigger and bigger every year.

Thanks

Debbie

Peonies are best divided in the fall, after the foliage dies. Lift and separate (LOL) is the easiest way. Make sure you take at least 3 eyes on the piece you wish to transplant.

Another tip to growing healthy peonies.
When you dig the hole dig it double the depth and add conpost and bone meal. Do not plant the eyes of the peony more then 1 inch below the soil line. Peonies that are planted to deep do not flower well.

Good luck replanting your peonies.

How are Peonies at attracting bees and wasps? If wasps really love them, I don't want them near my patio area.

Ours don't seem to attract the wasps. We had a couple of small nests on our deck, but far away from the peonies.

All good advice up above. Also, the following year, don't be discouraged if it doesn't do well. Check out this old post of mine:
.............Well, forget it. I just tried to find it but the search function is disabled and why does the garden thread only go back two pages?

Anyway, no wasps around my peonies but ants are attracted to them. I believe the plants actually need the ants to eat away at some sort of covering or something with the buds before they can blosom.

I found the thread I was referring to in the prior post. I transplanted beautiful healthy peonies from Mom's yard to mine and the following year their growth was stunted and the buds dried up. Patience is a virtue and I waited and was rewarded this Spring with healthy plants with the hope that they will get even better every year.
