is there an advantage to having contracts at multiple resorts?

my family and i just came back from disneyland and briefly talked with a DVC person right before leaving. we didn't have enough time to go to one of the presentations, so we have been doing some research online and reading these forums. i noticed that some members have contracts at multiple resorts. is there an advantage in doing so? we have only been to disneyland and currently live in washington, so we would probably pick grand california as our home resort. however, there is a good possibility that we will be moving to north carolina in the next few years. that makes us think maybe it would be better to choose a wdw resort instead...or maybe have a contract for both dl and wdw. can you combine your points from both contracts to use at one resort? do you have the 11 month booking window for both resorts? does anyone have any insight into this?

thanks for your help!

If you own points at different DVC resorts, under the same membership (ie: same UY and titled the same way), then you can use the points together at the 7 month window.

At 11 months, you can only use them at their own resort. So, if you own 100 at VGC and 100 at BLT, then all you can use at either one of those resorts during the home resort booking period is 100 points (unless you bank/borrow to get more points from that resort).

Some people own different resorts because they travel at different times of the year and want the home resort advantage at certain resorts. For example, I know that some own at BWV or BCV specifically to go durinou g Food and Wine in October and VWL for December, etc.

I was wondering the same thing. Thanks for the explanation. :)

UY = Use Year, a poor name for what it is.

Think of it as the month that Disney replenishes your DVC points. In the first 8 months of your use year, you can cancel a trip and still bank the points into the next year. In the last 4 months, banking is no longer allowed. Some people have different use years to allow maximum flexibility for banking purposes. I use my Feb use year points for trips from Feb through Sept, and my Aug use year points for trips Aug through March.

Disney/DVD is in the business of selling timeshares, so information from them will be slanted toward how wonderful the DVC is and why you should buy now.

The DIS has information good and bad about the DVC. You should spend as much time as you can reading current and past posts and learn as much as you can. :disrocks:

To get the best and most enjoyable use of your membership, my advice is that you buy where you love to stay. If you don't know where that is yet, then rent a reservation and stay at some different DVC resorts.

For example:
My UY is March. So, I can use my 2010 point for stays from 3/1/2010 - 2/28/2011. The last four months of my use year I can't make changes. So, from 11/1/2010 - 2/28/2011 I can't make changes. If I want to stay during this time, I must book it by the end of October. If I have points to bank, I must do so by the end of October.

this is true for trading out of DVC (using pts for disney collection hotels like the GF or for cruises), but not for DVC reservations.

after 10/31/2010, you can no longer bank 2010 pts into your 2011 UY, but you could still book a stay at a DVC resort from 11/1/10 through 2/28/11 using 2010 pts, if you can find availability. you could book the night of 2/28/2011 at a DVC resort by calling as late as that day if something is available. (it would be more limiting, though.)

You can also read the stickies a the top of the DVC forum for Use Year information and tips for picking your home resort. It is confusing at first, so you will get better the more you read. You can get some info from Allears.net, DVCNews.com and then there is a Passporter DVC E-book that you can download for less than $8 I think. I look at it from time to time.

The Rule of Four applies to stays other than the actual DVC resorts. So I can book AND travel the last 4 months of my Use Year to AKV or any other DVC resort....I cannot book AND travel to any of the other collections. To stay at the Poly (or where ever) I would have had to book that reservation before my 8 month mark.

It is easy to misunderstand this...so my good friends on the DIS educated me.

I thought if you had two 100 point contracts with the same use year, even at different Home resorts, you can book at either home reosrt at 11 months out, and combine the points. There fore having 200 points to book. It would let you switch resorts from year to year, still staying at your favorites, and still staying at your "home" resort.

Home resort points can only be used at the home resort at 11 months. You can combine them and use them anywhere at 7 months.

But can you borrow from the other contract at 11 months? Or you have to wait until 7 months?

We own 26 contracts at 5 resorts and we have been DVC Members for many years.

I think that you may be a bit confussed. :goodvibes

At 11 months you can only use your AKV points at AKV. Your BWV points at BWV. At 7 months you can combine them.

You don't borrow points from your other contracts at 7 months, you just use them. The term borrow is when you use next years points, this year.

I have one contract and I can barely keep it straight. Kudos to those of you who can keep different UYs and home bases straight without missing a deadline or losing points. I wish I had that ability.:worship:
