Is there a stomach bug going on at WDW?

I just had Norwalk about three weeks ago and certainly don't want to get it again! Then my sister had what we assume was food poisoning last week so she and I have had enough vomiting and diarrhea to last us a lifetime!!!

stomach virus is extremely prevalent here in North GA. Many people are probably traveling to Disney and either intentionally or unintentionally bringing it. WHen I am at Disney I always have a bottle of purel hanging from my backpack to use and I also carry indivdual antibacterial wipes. Hand washing is great, but if the water is not hot it will not kill the germs, plus they live longer in wet environments so grabbing paper towels and turning off sink etc can recontaminate you. I also bring a can of lysol and lysol everything that we might touch as soon as we walk in the room. Don;t know if it helps but it has made me feel better, I have had one child in hospital with Rotovirus and a staph infection before and I have a weakened immune system from meds I take, so I am overly precautious. I am glad to hear it is not rotovirus going around downthere as it can last a week and often hospitalizes small kids. SO sorry sick at Disney. I got pneumonia there a few years ago( I had a weakened immune system at the time.) Certainly changes the trip.

But handwashing even with lukewarm/cool water , as long as you use plenty of friction is better than hand gels or wipes when you are dealing with viruses.Antibacterial gels and wipes are fine for bacterial illnesses but really do nothing for viruses.

You're not going to get that water hot enough to kill germs. You would burn your hands. The point of handwashing is to loosen the germs and flush them down the drain.

This bug is just going around everywhere. At least it doesn't last for very long

We were ill in Disney too - arrived 11/15, I was sick starting 11/17 and DH was sick starting 11/19. We all had just finished a round of antibiotics the 14th as well, so it had to be something bacterial (and stomach related.)

We got back last night. My son had a stomach virus the week before we left. The remaining 4 of us were sick while at WDW. My belief is that we caught what he had. We took Zofran with us and it helped control the symptoms.

It's everywhere right now, not just Disney. I'm so glad my kids are out of school for the next two weeks and we are staying home.

While visiting DD9 at school for lunch Monday, 2 kids started throwing up in the lunchroom. I really don't want to catch it.

We got back a few days ago and DS and DH both were vomitting and had diarrhea, it managed to miss DD and myself. And FYI Delta would not change our flights for illness unless we paid a $100 per ticket fee.

Oh No! I know everyone is going to get sick as the winter season hits us but we flew home today and half our flight was vomiting from a bug of sorts. I can only keep my fingers crossed I dont get sick but we shall see. I did notice this year is Disney I could not find ONE bathroom with even luke warm water. It was all so cold. Even in the places to eat.

Seriously, this is exactly why people are sick! Enough is enough. People need to get travel insurance, cancel flights or suck up and reschedule. Passing germs around is not acceptable in order to save a few bucks. There could be immunocompromised people on that plane who may very well now have to spend their holidays in hospital just because families had to see Mickey Mouse at Christmas, despite being ill.

Good grief! Tiger :(

This is the problem and it is one thing that worries the folks that study and plan for super bugs. How do you get people to stay home?

There are studies that show that simply shutting down a school for a few days can halt an influenza or viral outbreak. Because the children are home, the parents usually stay home as well.

Schools and crowded places are real breeding grounds.

This is why we don't cruise....

This bug hits so fast you might not know you are sick until it's too late. People also have to be back home for work and that is not covered under travel insurance.

If a child has already been sick, then that illness is already known about. She said that she took a sick child on the plane, so that is a problem.

I totally know about being ill - I have been sick most of my life and have cancelled every conceivable event, vacations included. My health, and the health of others whom I might come into contact with are more important than money.

P.S. We don't cruise for these reasons either.

Sure is going around. My dd8 started with the virus at 8 Sat. night. Threw up on the bus back to Poly.. She proceeded to continue all night and all of Sunday. Sat. awas her bday and at least most of the day was great, however, getting home on the plane was no fun for anyone! It was awful not having the Lysol and windex to clean up. Not to mention doing laundry at 5am in the Poly. laundry. I figured if it was food poisioning, she would have been better after her body got rid of the bad food. Luckily, no one else has it yet:yay:

Poor baby - what a horrible end to her birthday.

I posted on the other thread that all 9 of us got this virus (presumably Norwalk or something nasty like it) when we were at WDW 11/27 to 12/6.

The scenario you posted above is why I was SO thankful we were in a DVC unit where we had a washer/dryer in the room and a full kitchen so we could heat up chicken soup. It also helped having multiple rooms so we could spread out and segregate the sick ones from the well ones.

The one and only time we did cruise we all got the Norwalk virus.

Oh I will not do a cruise for this very reason either! I dont fly if I get sick. I have canceled flights and vacations due to being sick or my son being sick. I worked with DRs and at one point we had to totally avoid germs. HA! Impossible yet one can surely cut the risks of spreading and getting germs.

The very first thing I do when I get into my hotel is clean it... the bathrooms all fixtures and light switches door knobs etc. Hopefully this is what has kept my family healthy on this trip and I hope it continues. Some may call it being paranoid but hey.. whatever. I also didnt take a thing from the flight attendants on the plane since they were so busy catering to all the sick people I didnt want anything they had touched.

When I last got trip insurance from yahoo travel... it was just if you were too sick to fly. You needed a doctors note and who in the world is going to say someone should travel if they are so sick as people have described. Im in agreement people need to look into trip insurance!

The virus at WDW is starting to read like The Stand....:lmao: If anyone knows what I'm talking about.

You caught what he had? Yeah, you and probably 100 other innocent victims you exposed while at WDW! Seriously people - I can't believe what I'm reading. Who would knowingly expose other people to nasty stomach bugs? Suck it up and postpone the trip people!

To the person saying that the airline would require them to pay a $100 change fee per ticket to reschedule their flight - I'm sorry, but I consider it selfish and irresponsible of you to not reschedule. Yes, it would cost you $$, but really - imagine how many people you subjected to your illness by continuing to fly despite knowing your illness.:sad2:

Maybe I'll just hole myself up in my house - then at least I wouldn't be subjected to illness spread by irresponsible people.;)

We caught the virus, it started hours after we arrived home. I'm sure we infected people on our flight, especially since we sat in the last row (the worst place to sit for air circulation). I didn't know I was hours away from vomitting.

I'm a huge germ freak myself - constantly upset with friends who bring their green snotty kids to play at my house. But...I can't imagine being stuck at an airport away from home sick. No matter what - an airborne virus is going to get someone sick somewhere. Just my two cents....

Public service announcement....Repeat after me people.....Antibiotics do not help viruses(so don't call the Dr asking for a zpack if you are vomiting and have diarrhea ,make an appt to be evaluated if you think it may be more than a virus. The only thing the antibiotics will do is guarantee that they will become useless to fight the bacteria they were intended for)The Flu shot does not stop stomach viruses( but do get one to help prevent Resp flu).Antibacterial hand sanitizers do not stop viruses( those of you who rely on these for your sole handcleaning ).WASH WASH WASH your hands.Cold water, lukewarm water,or Hot water...as long as you wash with enough friction and long enough( sing the alphabet song slowly)you are helping prevent the spread of illness. Also, try not to take things like Lomotil or immodium if you happen to get the stomach bug...it only prolongs your illness.Eve nwith all the precautions out there...Does it guarantee you won't get it? NO.you can be highly vigilant about washing your hands etc, and you still may contract it.PLEASE,PLEASE,PLEASE do not travel when sick,go to buffets or restaurants sick,go to school or work sick. You are putting others around you at GREAT risk. The elderly, the young babies and children, and all the people that are immunosuppressed from Cancer therapies,Organ transplants etc. CAN DIE from simple strains of stomach flu, resp flu etc. I have had 2 cancer pts pass away after contracting the norovirus. Please be cautious.

He was better by the time we left, I just called in case he was sick thank you very much. Not to mention that it would have been a lot more than $100, it would have been the difference in flights as well and we were out of vacation time and not wanting to get fired, I guess, is definitely selfish! But again, we did not fly sick, or at least knowingly, my DD just started vomiting yesterday so this seems to take about 4 days from exposure to hit. Maybe you should start a campaign directed towards the airlines about this issue, convince them to let ill people switch flights without charging outrageous fees. If anyone is selfish, it is them.

There are a some of very self righteous, judgemental people on this board.

This is silly because most of the time you are contagious before you even show symptoms so in the big picture, it doesn't really make a difference. The only way for YOU not to get sick is to hole yourself up and I think everyone would be grateful for that!
