Oh well, Spring a Leak it is then.

Hope he has fun there and isn't disappointed watching all of the other kids in the bay paddling and having a great time.

In all honesty, there doesn't seem to be any comforting you/your phobia so I think you might want to seriously consider staying on the ship that day. If you cannot find a way to cope with your child enjoying the water, then it might be best not to tempt them at all since, once they are there, they are not likely to want to leave because it is such a tremendously great place.

If you stay onboard, you can view the beach, get a tan, and have the pool to yourselves without allowing your phobias to negatively impact your child's fun.

I live in florida and have been around the ocean most of my life. On the beaches here Sharks are a real concern--the water is not clear like it is in the bahamas and the sand is darker making the water dark. There is also Surf which churns the sand up. Often you can't see a shark until it's pretty close, or you will see them IN a wave.

On CC it's very different. There are the nets, there are the lifeguards, and the water is not only VERY shallow for a good distance out (where most beaches would have a surf-created drop off), it is VERY clear. If there was a shark they would be easy to spot. As shallow as the area is--you would see it coming.

I'm thinking the last headline disney wants is "Shark Attack at Castaway Cay"--the beach/bay area is very small--if sharks came in they would be spotted pretty easily. The family beach area seemed pretty artifically made--very much like a pool with some man made features and fish.

COULD there be a shark? Sure, but its not likely. Stay in the shallow areas if you are that worried, its more like a wading pool.

Oh well.....I feel badly for your son....we all have our fears and some have debilitating phobias...I hope you consider rectifying your phobia for your sons sake....:(

Like I said before what better place than here where the environment is secure. no one said to go deep sea diving. I just hope you don't tell him that he can't go in or at least not why he can't go in...smh....

Wow! Judge much??? First of all, dont tell me what to do and how to spend my vacation or how to raise my child!! I have been to many beaches and have had a great time. My son is not going to be deprived of fun by not going in the ocean so give me a freakin break!! I know my son more than you do and he is not going to even want to go into the ocean. I started this thread asking about if there are pools or water play areas and that's it!! Never asked for your opinion on how I should raise my son or if my family and I should stay on the freakin boat! :furious:

Oh puhleeze! You dont need to feel bad for my son. He is just fine.:rolleyes2

Putting my son in the ocean then leaving him there is not going to make me feel better. There is a big difference between not watching a needle which cant kill your kid to putting him in an ocean full of predators which can.

:rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2::lmao::lmao::lmao::lmao: Sorry but I have been an open water diver for 37 years with well over 300 dives and have never had a problem/issue with sharks or any other form of sea life. I have dove around reef shark and white tips never a problem. My daughter received her divers certificate when she was 12 years old and loves to dive.

I understand how you feel, I also have a phobia of sharks. I am going to try to get in the ocean at CC and I know my kids and husband will want to. I won't hold them back because of my fears. Funny thing is, I grew up around the ocean and have snorkeled and swam in Galveston, which is not clear. MY phobia started after I went deep sea fishing and caught a shark, it scared the crap out of me to see what is actually in the ocean. :crazy2:

Is this a joke? Are you really that Afraid of sharks that you won't even wade in the water with your child? The shark isn't going to come ashore, you can easily go in just a little and be very, very safe. I could understand not wanting to out out swimming in the ocean if you have a fear, but this has gone to the irrational stage.

You know, we spent an extra day at Castaway Cay once and NO passengers were allowed off the boat. Aside from being worried about airfare for the trip home (which Disney graciously worked out), it wasn't all that bad. :joker:

We sure didn't have to worry about any sharks that day! :happytv:

No judgement here - I have a phobia of fish and I don't get in the ocean - ever. I tried wave runners and I couldn't handle that, I was too close to the water and the likely possiblity of fishes swimming under me sent me over the edge. Meanwhile my 2 year old was loving every minute of it...My kiddos know I am crazy and still love me. I am sure you will have a wonderful vacation and enjoy all the non ocean water activites CC has to offer. I know I can't wait to hit the beach (and enjoy my water time on the boat)!:goodvibes

Off topic - but why did that happen?

We didn't get out in time and the waves kept pushing the ship toward the reef. We got caught in some pretty nasty weather. In fact, it hit the whole eastern seaboard. There were a lot of angry people on both sides of the delay, on the boat and waiting to get on. There was a huge line at the customer service desk and people lined the decks and verandas to watch each time the captain tried to inch us out safely. I think the staff did a wonderful job handling something that was completely out of their control. They printed up new, special navigators and planned events to keep both adults and children occupied.

The folks waiting to board lost a day of their cruise and many were upset about it even though Disney gave them a free day at the parks and both sides a 20% discount on a future cruise.

I understand. I don't even sit in the office while my son is getting a shot or blood draw. I pace around at home until it is over. BTW, real phobia's in themselves are paralyzing. Without going into to many details of my personal life, as silly as a needle injection sounds to you, to me it is very scary. That is why they are called phobias. It is an irrational fear. I get it. You will figure out what is best for you and your family. And very much enjoy your trip, whether you are in the ocean or not. :)

I think some posters are just saying it's not fair to impose your fears and insecurities on your son if possible. That's all.

Check out the DCL website for CC:

There's loads of information there. And no judgement ;)

That's what I've been thinking as I read this thread. It seems a shame to pass an irrational phobia on to a young child who COULD turn out to be normal and really, really enjoy the ocean and maybe want to be a Marine Biologist when they grow up or something. Personally I would try hard to keep my phobia to myself and let the rest of my family enjoy the beach as they wish.

When my DS was younger I once panicked in a bad storm that came with tornado warnings and one of those projected path things on TWC and the storm was heading right for us. As a precaution I made DS get into the bathtub and stay in the bathroom until the storm subsided. He was probably about 6 or 7 at the time. But it freaked him out to the point that he still almost has panic attacks at the thought of ANY approaching thunderstorm storm.:( I hate myself for doing this to him. He needs to be AWARE of the dangers that COULD occur with a severe storm but certainly not panic at the thought of any storm. I struggle through this with him every spring and summer when we have numerous storms pass through and sometimes there's a tornado warning so I hustle everybody to the basement. I reallllllly regret passing this fear to him.

get over yourself. Enjoy your phobia, just know that it is pathetic that you are projecting your insecurities onto your child
