i love to over plan and we are supposed to go to kauai this year. love the Disboards. would love a hawaii forum to help me over plan with budget ideas, must do things, best places to go. i've looked at trip advisor a little bit but have trouble with finding current stuff. i prefer to lurk and not ask questions. this way i learn things i would never think to ask. tia.

Don't know of any Kauai forums. My favorite thing we did on Kauai was a helicopter tour. It flew over Waimea Canyon and Na Pili coast. It was breath taking. We stayed in Poipu. It was over 10 years ago but there was a place called Poipu Burgers that was soo good. Have you tried the gohawaii site?

ETA: There are also a ton of great hikes.

agree. love kauai and tripadvisor forum is awesome. really helped when we planned our vacation. wish i was going. if you go in spring / summer do a na pali coast boat tour from north. we just fell in love with the island. hope to return someday.

don't overbook...pick 2-3 activities to do during the week [guessing a week] and let the rest fall into place.

hawaii has a main board and then each island has a board. it's fairly active.

Enjoy!

Was just there in October & did the helicopter trip. We LOVED it! We were sorry we didn't
have time for the tubing trip. Maybe another visit down the road? Have fun!

I'm (hopefully it's not for sure yet) heading to Kauai too! Idk Kauai forums but we LOVED this activity a couple years ago and can't wait to do it again: http://kauaibackcountry.com/tubing/

We used this company for the ziplining and it was awesome!!!

I planned a two week vacation to Hawaii- one week in Kauai and one in Maui and used the tripadvisor forums, but honestly had better input/planning from the Revealed books. Kauai: Revealed was a lifesaver for us.

We went ziplining with Kauai Backcountry and took a helicopter tour with Jack Harter: http://www.helicopters-kauai.com/index.html. We also did some stuff on our own like the NaPali hike to Hanakapi'ai beach on the Kalalau trail (one of our favorites). We did a boat tour with Captain Andy's as well: http://www.napali.com/tours/ (we did the snorkel BBQ one). You can't see the Napali coast except by helicopter, boat and hiking (so I guess we did all three!). We usually did an activity in the morning then hung by the pool/beach in the afternoon. We stayed at the Kauai Marriott and it was absolutely amazing- best pool ever. We used the book for a lot of off the beaten path locals restaurants and even picked up some food at Costco (along with $1.50 hot dogs for lunch).

We've stayed at the Kauai Marriott and are looking to stay again! LOVED it! And I'll definitely look into that book.

Doing activities in the morning is such great advice for whatever island you visit in Hawaii if the activity involves the ocean- the waters are much calmer then. Discounted afternoon snorkel tours are discounted for a reason!

It's been a few years (We went with a party of 10 in 2014), but let me be the third person to recommend the TripAdvisor Kauai forum. Spend some more time out there and I'm guessing that you'll feel more comfortable to participate. There are some people who go to Kauai every year or more there and I thought it was a very active forum. At least in 2014 that forum was super active and very helpful to me for planning. Our budget view of the Napali coast from above, seeing the Jurassic park waterfalls from above, etc. was with a great little company called Wings Over Kauai -- very good price for filling the whole plane pp with five or six of us from our group and tons of fun. We stayed in Poipu too, though, in the summer the North Shore seems to be a favorite of frequent visitors and some in our party who were there for an extra few days at the beginning of our trip stayed there a few days first and we did two day trips up. Other times of the year, Poipu is recommended because of all the rain up north. Summer, though, is dry season and the North is very lush and beautiful. // The one piece of advice I wish I hadn't listened to is that you don't need air conditioning in the summer. In hind site, the house we rented did not have a great cross breeze and I wish I had selected the large condo I was contemplating for our group with A/C instead. It didn't ruin or trip or anything, but we had a pretty hot stretch and could have really used that A/C. The island is so diverse with lush green, other areas that look like the South Western US, etc. DS is a photographer. We let him pick a vacation destination for high school graduation and this is what he picked. It was a great choice too.
