Hello!

We just became members on the Magic last week. Our dinner companions had been DVC members for years and commented on how they would use points to book one person and use the "cash discount" and pay cash for the other person.

What exactly is this cash discount? Does it vary by cruise/route?

Looking to book Alaska for next year and push it back to 2014 if Disney keeps the route. If not, next year it is!

No cash discounts unless they are trying to fill a ship and have left over staterooms. That has happened once so far that I remember. It was earlier this year.

DVC negotiates the price for cash guests. You have to use points for the first guest and you can pay cash for any remaining. But you won't get a deal.

Cruising on points is expensive.

Thanks, figured as much! We don't see us doing that many cruises, probably Alaska and one that goes to CK, so will save our points for Disney resorts and the RCI properties.

You might want to learn about booking RCI before you make your plans.

You need to learn more about DVC. The best use of your points is DVC resorts. If you can still cancel, you might want to consider that and learn more about DVC before buying. But time is running out on cancelling your purchase.

use your points how you wish. Cruises and RCI may not be the best use of points but at the end of the day they are YOUR points use them to travel how ever you want.

DVC sets the cash rate for each cruise when dates are first released. The DVC cost stays the same even if the cost for booking through Disney Cruise goes up or down later. If you book partly on points and partly with cash, you must book everyone in the cabin through DVC, and pay the DVC rate. There are times when Disney Cruise prices have gone up and the DVC rate looks like a discount, but there have also been times when the DVC rate was well above the current price for booking through Disney Cruise.
