Hi,
I'm overwhelmed with so many tablet choices! My son is in 8th grade. His school encourages "Bring Your Own Device". He does NOT need it at home as he has his own computer. However, for school, he needs something to access google classroom and research on the internet. He does NOT want a chromebook but a tablet with a keyboard.

I am looking for something inexpensive (under $250) in case it gets stolen or broken. He wanted a Surface before he saw the price. He has no preference for Apple or Android. I was looking at an ASUS but don't know anyone who has one!

Any suggestions?

The Samsung Galaxy 4 gets pretty good reviews. We got a white one at Costco for $229 and a black one at target for $249. Almost all the stores have them for $249 this weekend.

I've had good luck with my Acer Iconia tablet. It was about $250, but it's also 10 inches with 32 GB of space. There are cheaper versions for under $200. My sister really likes her Google Nexus 7, which I also believe is under $200. If you go that route get the 2013 version not the 2012. The 2012 breaks easily because the battery has too much space and slips out of place if you drop it even from a small distance. The 2013 doesn't have that problem. Also, I would avoid Windows tablets. IMO they just can't compete with Apple or Android when it comes to app availability at this point.

I don't know if it will work for you (I don't know what google classroom is or if these can access it) but amazon has their Fire HD tablets on sale through today. Fire HD6 is only $79 and Fire HD7 is $109. I have always been happy with my Kindle Fires so I jumped on the HD6 at that price.

I just saw an article about best black friday / cyber monday deals and one was a laptop at Staples for $150 (normally $200). It was a touch screen that ran windows 8.1. The deal runs until December 1st according to the article. Worth checking out... I personally prefer a small laptop with a keyboard over a tablet, but that is personal preference.

My DD's school made a big deal out of the whole bring your own device thing and told every student they need one so I let her use my older kindle fire - they have only used their own devices twice.

She doesn't even take it to school anymore. So you may want to hold off until you know for sure if it's needed.

I emailed the one teacher who was pushing it and she said the schools wifi couldn't handle all of the devices when they were on at once so they are no longer using them this year. She said maybe next year when they get their wifi upgraded over the summer.

I'm so glad I didn't spend the money to get her own device!

I bought a white Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 10.1" (2014 version) last week at Amazon for $229, but several places online still have it for around $249 this weekend. It's a very nice tablet, and you can put up to a 64 GB micro SD card in it for more storage. I saw bluetooth keyboard cases for it on Amazon for around $25.

As much as I enjoy shopping at Amazon, I don't care for the Fire tablets at all. They're much too locked into the Amazon "ecosystem", and they make it difficult to download an app that isn't on the Amazon app store. Also, you cannot expand the memory with a micro SD card.

My husband just bought the Samsung Galaxy 4 8" tablet from Amazon for $179. and is very happy with it.

All 3 of my kids have Asus Memo Pad that pay 100 bucks for they good tablets. They hold good to.

Ipad Mini (1st Generation) is $199.99 at Bestbuy, I'm seeing. I got mine...shoot..this could be the start of year 3 at Xmas...and it's still going strong and would meet what you are looking for. I love it :-)

Good luck!
