I am trying to figure out the equivalent in digital to my current lenses.

For my film SLR, I have 3 lenses. My fav is my 28-105, I also have a 70-210 and a 35-105 for my back-up camera.

I am looking at getting a digital SLR now that we have really decided on going to Paris and I want to get a lens that is equivalent to my 28-105 or even one that would be equivalent to 28-200...Is there a chart out there I can print out that would tell me what to look for?

I am considering the Canon 30D or the New Rebel...weight of the camera is inportant....Can anyone recommend a good lens for these systems?

thanks a million.

Most DSLRs have a 1.4 to 1.6 crop factor. This means a 100mm lens on a DSLR camera will "see" what a 160mm lens does (using the 1.6 factor) on a film camera. So just multiply your lenses by 1.5 to get a rough idea of what they will "see" on a DSLR.

On a Canon 30D or Rebel XTi you would need an 18-66 lens to duplicate the 28-105 range you have now. I dont think anyone makes a lens at exactly that range but there are many that are close.

I prefer Canon lenses but Sigma has an 18-125mm lens that is equivalent to a 28-200 lens on a Canon digital and many on this board have this lens and love it. Sigma also has an 18-200 lens for Canon but it is not as good optically as their 18-125.

On the bright side, if your 70-210 is for a Canon camera it will be the equivalent of a 112-336mm lens on the 30D or XTi.

This page has a nice list of the crop factors. http://www.steves-digicams.com/cameras_digpro.html

To figure out what you want when compared to your SLR lenses, divide your lenses by the crop factor and that is what you need to cover the same range on a DSLR. As long as your lenses are compatible with a DSLR, it looks like you will just need to cover something at the wide end. The kit lens (18-55) may be fine to complete your package. Many people like the 18-125 Sigma and the 18-200 from Sigma or Tamron.

as you may be aware, you might be able to use your lenses if you get the same brand( ie i can use my canon film compatible lenses on my canon digital) for canon rebel it's any ef( eos) lens or third party ef compatible. some third party need to be rechipped.

Thanks for all the info...Boy I find DSLR lenses confusing but you guys sure helped me out.

Bright side...all my SLR lenses are Canon EF (EOS) untrasonic lenses.

I am leaning towards the XTI camera as I can't justify the 30D unless I would get back into weddings (something that a Motel owner can't do in summer) and it's a little on the heavy side for 25 days in France constantly around my neck.

Is there anything about the XTI that anyone wants to share that they think I should be aware of...???

thanks a million everyone.:thumbsup2
