I would like to ask for an "Upgrade" when I check in ?Is their a way to go about it ?? But also I don't want to pay the extra == Just see if they have a better room for what I paid for ? Sorry if its confusing the way I am wording it .

Doesn't hurt to ask. Just don't display an entitlement attitude and they'll sometimes be able to accommodate you. At some places front desk staff don't have a lot of flexibility. Don't know about WDW.

We have always gotten an upgrade - DH and I will "play" with the CM's and not even ask. They will give you the best room available. I agree with the PP - don't have an attitude of entitlement, just have fun with them!

I have batted my eyes and made sweet flirt talk and it still got me zip! I have not said anything before on anniversaries and b-days (it was noted on the ressie but I never said it at check in) and that got me zip too....

I think most complimentary upgrades are assigned before you check in. From what I've read on these boards, they're usually done for the resorts' convenience - evening out room counts for housekeeping, taking rooms out of service for maintenance, etc. It just looks like "pixie dust" to the guest.

Upgrades are also a lot less common than they appear on these boards.

That said, I would never be comfortable asking for one. No matter how I phrased it, I'd feel like I was really saying, "Hey, you know that fancy room that would cost me hundreds of dollars extra for the week? Well, I want you to give it to me for free." And I'd be convinced that the CM would be saying some fairly choice things about me after I left the desk.

But then, maybe I just have a low embarrassment threshold. Go ahead and ask, it's not like they're going to throw you out of the resort for asking....

I agree. I would never feel comfortable either asking for an upgrade that's why I pay for mine. But I guess it couldn't hurt and I will send some pixie dust your way.

we booked standard view AKL for our last trip and it was for our anniversary. we just casualyl said "you wouldnt happen to ahve any free upgraded rooms, just thought I'd ask, cant hurt to try" type thing, and we got upgraded to savannah view! like i said, cant hurt to ask, dont ask, dont get!

We treat the CM's respectfully. We enjoy visiting with them, but we don't expect/hint/request an upgrade. We pay for the level of service we want. If we want something extra nice, we plan for it in the budget.

Personally, I'd never ask for a FREE upgrade. When others are paying for their upgrade in room type, what entitles me to expect that the resort should provide me with one for free? Just seems in very, very poor taste, IMHO--as if the person asking for the freebee is more special/entitled than everyone else.

If you truly want to upgrade to a better room view/type, then why not just book one and pay for it?

Heck I always WANT an upgrade hhaha, but would never ask for it! The first time we stayed at the Bc we got upgraded to concierge/waterview! Amamzing - we did not say anything or have any idea how it happened.

But we always just book garden view...but we have gotten water views with that and so we just go in knowing what we booked and if we get a better view it is a wonderful suprose!

I would never ask for what I can't pay for, and I have to agree that most upgrades are probably already in the system. When I make a reservation, I make no room location or special requests. I kind of like flying by the seat of my pants, so to speak - it's so much more exciting. Anyway, I've been upgraded my past three trips. Once from CSR to Grand Floridian, and twice from studio to 1-BR Villa at SSR. I don't think there is any "better" way to get an upgrade, but more a luck of the draw.

Okay, the best way to approach it is simply ask
"I know it's probably not the best time to ask, but just in case we might consider upgrading our room, is there availability and how much extra would it cost us for this stay?"

No problem in asking!!! But don't be discouraged if it doesn't fit your budget or come freely to you..you're still staying in a wonderful resort and you'll most likely be making most of your memories outside the hotel room than in...hmmm...unless it's your honeymoon!

At check in I simply and nicely ask...are there any upgrades available. This is not saying I expect them for free. One time I got upgraded to a water view at the beach club. One time I was offered an upgrade from a standard view to concierge at the WL for $99 a night. Which was a saving about $100 off rack rate considering my current discounted rate. When I ask sometimes they say there are none available and sometimes they tell me a cost of the upgrade. If its more than I want to/can pay, I simply nicely tell them no thanks.

I don't think there is anything wrong with asking. I do agree with others don't get upset if they can't upgrade you.

I'd be too embarrassed to ask, but it sure beats the procedure in Vegas. My b/f gives the people at the check-in desk $20 and asks if there are any upgrades available. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. I think I'd die of embarrassment if he did that in Disney though I do think it's worth asking for though.

I was told by a Cast Member that any free upgrades which happen at check-in take place when the guests name is entered in the computer and a thing will come up that says they got a free upgrade. So the Cast Members have no control over it since it was decided before that a free upgrade would happen.

Also when asking if any upgrades are available and if the Cast Member says yes it is, chances are they will think your willing to pay the extra $ per night because they can not give free upgrades just like that.

Sure. It's the difference between accepting an unsolicited gift, and asking someone to give you a gift.

I think what the other posters meant is that it's presumptious to ASK for something for free, when others must pay for it. That it gives the impression that you feel you are entitled to something that others are not.

I dont feel comfortable asking either...but I do hope that one day they will surprise me.

Not at all, but again, I didnt ask. If they choose to offer, then by all means, Ill take it.

I also dont see any problem in asking if there are any upgrades available and what the price would be, if you have are willing to pay....but the OP specifically said that they did not want to pay any extra.
