Is the San Angel Inn Really That Bad?

I did not really like either restaurant. If you prefer mexican food, then try San Angel Inn. I love mexican food, and I thought it was o.k. The atmosphere was nice, we had a table by the waterway and it was nice to see the boats go by. My ds, who was 5 at the time, had a major meltdown in the restaurant, this was our last meal of an 8 day trip, so he was just exhausted. I'm not sure if that played with my review or not.

Rose and Crown was o.k. as well. We were able to sit outside and that was nice, but just felt the food was o.k.

So, I guess if I had two choose again between those 2, I'd pick San Angel.

We liked it enough to plan a lunch there on our trip in two weeks. We also have a dinner ADR for Rose and Crown later in the week, so I'd say you do well with either.

If you've never been there, you'll wonder what you missed. If you go, and don't like it, at least you know. Perhaps you'll find that you do like it, like the other 48% of us. :thumbsup2

I might be in the minority but I LOVE San Angel Inn. It is truly my favorite restaurant on property. Free tortilla chips, margaritas, tasty food, and wonderful ambience. Where can you go wrong?

Not really hot, but spicy. I believe it contains poblano peppers, which aren't particularly hot but have a distinctive flavor. The soup also contains cheese, avocado and tortilla strips.

We ate there last year for lunch and loved it! The atmosphere was great, and we loved having chips to munch on during our lunch. It was really hot that day and our server brought over a whole carafe of lemonade to drink, instead of just two glasses.

We like it! We have always had a good meal and a nice time. The atmosphere of course is wonderful. I love the Filete Motuleno, it is delicious!

We went there in March 09 and really enjoyed it. I was a little concerned also because I had seen so many bad reviews. DH and I both thought it was good. We loved the atmosphere and we found it was quieter than many other restaurants. We did the DDP that trip and this was our only out of pocket meal. We will definitely go back.

Echoing what others have said...

I don't think it's THAT bad, but it's certainly nothing special when it comes to food. I just feel like it's similar to any of the 2 or 3 Mexican restaurants where I eat on a regular basis. I've never had a bad meal, and never had any issues with service.

The atmosphere is great... especially on a sweltering August day. After eating lunch there, it's almost disappointing to go back outside and realize that it's not dusk and it's still hot.

I am another person who avoided SAI because of the reviews but we decided to try it last October and loved it. We tried R&C twice and were very dissapointed both times. That being said not everyone will love it and it really is just something you need to try yourself. I used to love Dinner in France and had wonderful food twice but on our last visit we really didn't like it at all. Try it you might like it.

It is just my opinion and experience of eating there several times, but to answer your question, yes, it is really that bad..from the food to the service.

Just one opinion though. I know other's love it.

Love the setting but our May meal there was really disappointing. I think the last time I ate there might have been . . . 2005 or 2006 and I remember it better then. But I wouldn't go back based on last meal.

We had a fantatic meal at SAI in October!!! Everything, from appetizers - dessert, was absolutley delicious!!! Service was great too. Try it for yourself and don't read too much into reviews - we all have different tastes.

We were disappointed by the food there on more than one occassion. Having grown up in Ca we are accustomed to a variety of Mexican dishes, but resturant made and homemade, and these were not that great. While the food was edible it didn't meet our criteria of "good" mexican food. DHs biggest peeve was asking if they had tamales (he was craving one), and the server didn't even know what one was :confused3

DH and I eat there every trip, it is a tradition for us. We think that it is a great place to eat and love the atmosphere. Nothing like sitting in a cool, dark restaurant after a very hot day in the parks! :thumbsup2

I know it get bad reviews, but I do enjoy this restaurant, however the food is so so. I enjoy the atmosphere and the drinks. I usually order a few appetizers as my meal, that way I'm not disappointed.

Another thumbs up for SAI here. :thumbsup2 It is a must do everytime we head to WDW. Not a bad experience in 20 years! Even the kids love it and they have been going since they were babies. The oldest is 16 now! My only wish is that it wasn't so expensive. Go and try for yourself, you might be surprised.

The food was not nearly as good as the local Mexican restaurant where we eat for $5-$6 for combination plates. The service was the worst I have ever encountered at a restaurant. I am not a hard person to please and there are very few restaurants at WDW that I say bad things about but this is the top of that list. This is the only restaurant that I have ever left no tip for the waiter.
