Only by the local media.

from orlandoairports.net

OIA=An abbreviation for Orlando International Airport (MCO)
MCO=The official airport designator code for Orlando International Airport

I would only use MCO if making air reservations as OIA is used officially as an airport code in Brazil.

interesting history of MCO - code that is - (wikipedia)

Floridians joke that the airport code MCO stands for "Mickey's Corporate Office", as the Orlando area is the location of Disney and Walt Disney World; it actually stands for its former name - McCoy an Air Force pilot who crashed in the area.

See, I was paying attention at some point. Any idea as to why the local media differentiates? Just curious.

That happens all over the place. Most airports have a nickname that's not the same as the designator code. At some airports, the nickname is a set of initials. At other airports, the nickname is part of the full airport name.

In Denver, it's a mouthful to say "Denver International Airport," so residents and the press use the nickname "DIA" — instead of using the designator code of DEN.

In Chicago, it's a mouthful to say "Chicago O'Hare International Airport," so residents and the press use the nickname "O'Hare" — instead of using the designator code of ORD.

There are some exceptions. For Los Angeles International Airport, LAX is the nickname and the designator code — often pronounced "lax." Nobody says LAIA.

Yes, Orlando has two commercial airports:
MCO — Orlando International Airport (nickname: OIA)

SFB — Orlando Sanford International Airport (nickname: Sanford)

Disney's Magical Express only serves OIA.

I'll remember that- now I'll never get them mixed up! ::MickeyMo

MCO is the official Air Traffic Control designation of Orlando International Airport. The McCoy Air Force Base, before Orlando International, is how it was derived. ORL is the Air Traffic Control designation of the former main airport, before jets, now know as Orlando Executive Airport. Every airport in the world has its own 3 letter identifier for Air Traffic Control purposes.
