Or do I need a map of some kind? I just assumed that once we get on HHI we will find the resort from posted signs. But as we get closer (leaving a week from Saturday), I am started to think about 'details' more and more.

We will just find the resort?
Thanks,
DJ

They have strict regulations on HHI about signs, so ALL signs are fairly small. You have to keep a look-out.

Basically you'll be coming from the West. Once you get on the Island you'll go a few miles, than make a broad 90 degree turn to go due South. After the turn you've probably got 4 or 5 miles.

You'll pass a shopping mall on your right. The turn to Disney (a right turn) is shortly after that.

The shopping mall Caskbill mentioned is Shelter Cove. Just past the mall is the entrance to Palmetto Dunes Plantation- it would be a left turn. (This is road to the Beach House). Instead, turn right and follow the signs to the resort- it's about 1/2 and is right across from the Shelter Cove Marina.

There are also some directions on your confirmation sheet.

Enjoy!

Thanks! I just pulled out my confirmation and you are right! There are directions on there! I didn't even notice.

Sorry about that, this is our first trip to a DVC resort (we just joined last year), so I am still learning :D .

Thanks again!

I know on our first HHI trip we were lost almost all of the time. Many of the restaurants and stores are in mini-malls, and as Caskbill said, the signs aren't easy to see. In fact, landscaping is so lush that it's easy to miss the whole mini-mall.

We were constantly overshooting our destination, and then doing a turnaround. It was kind of frustating, to be honest with you, but it makes for a much better looking island.

During our last visit to HH (1/2003) the sign closest o the road was carely visible because of the plants growing over it.

However, there are small mile markers next to the road. As I recall, the HH resort is just after mile marker 8.

If you do not take the toll road, the entrance will be on your right. As your passengers are looking to the right side to find it. Buildings are easy to see, signs are not. You will see a Cracker Barrell, and then a Piggly Wiggly. Then a mall with a Saks 5th Avenue, Talbots, and Belks. Shelter Cove Entrance is next. That is where you turn. Go straight back and when you see the big statue of Neptune, turn right and go over the bridge. (look at all the Yachts) Welcome Home! Don't need to look for it after getting off I-95 it is a long way from I-95. wait until you pass the split for the toll road. Also on the right side of the road, is one of the creepiest grave yards. It is in the oak trees with all the spanish moss hanging down. It always seem dark in there. It is right before you see the Piggly Wiggly. Its not a tourist spot, it is just creepy to see.

When you first get on the Island, stay in the right lanes. The left lanes are an exit only to the toll road, where you don't want to be.

Wow! Thanks everyone! I'm so glad I asked! I am hoping it is still light when we get there, but we may have to find it in the dark, so all these tips will be a BIG help!

I agree with all of the above posts. After reading all the good posts before we went to HHI in January, we decide we wanted to arrive in daylight hours. Am I glad we did that. The Disney sign is set further back from the road than I expected. I'm not sure we would have seen it in the dark. The one thing DH noticed is right by the Disney sign and closer to the road is a sign for the "Self Family Arts Center". He always seemed to noticed that sign first and knew to make the next right.

Hope this helps and have a great trip. :D

We just got back from our first (but definitely not last) trip to HHI late last nite. Besides the confirmation sheet directions, be sure to look for a traffic light at the corner where you turn right. And do you have any extra room in your suitcase? Need a tour guide? Don't miss the dolphins that are around in the morning!

Did you do the dolphin cruise? Or did you just see them out in the water? We only have one day at HHI, and we wanted to run to Savannah to go to Juliette Low's home (I'm a Girl Scout Leader, and she was the founder of Girl Scouts, so I am really looking forward to going there).

I wonder if we can do the dolphin cruise AND go to Savannah? Probably too much, huh? Well we will see.

We also have a 'tradition' of staying up on Academy Award night to see who won best picture, and that is our first night there, so I think I need a 'no sleep' pill so we can do all the things I want to do! ;)

Actually, the most exciting part of seeing the dolphins was that it wasn't on any "Dolphin Cruise" (which we didn't go on), but seeing them "in the wild", in the channel to the right rear of the main check-in lodge. The CM at the front desk said she saw them every day on her way in to work, and we saw them twice around 9:00 am, and once around sunset. The first time I heard loud splashing and thought someone was feeding the birds or throwing rocks! What it was was the dolphin splashing to churn up fish to eat-usually there are other birds, pelicans, hanging around too.

When we were there in July, we had a group of 4-5 dolphin everyday at the inlet to shelter cove. We had a perfect view from our 2 bd in building 30. we watched every morning during breakfast. very cool!

One thing that got us (in daylight) was that the photos you see in various places give the impression that HHI is off by itself. These are skillfully crafted photos, because the reality is that the resort itself is nestled-in behind several other things. It's not something easily seen from the road, and it's not because of heavy vegetation or small signs. But, we did manage to navigate just fine using the instructions on the confirmation. Just keep your eyes peeled.

We drove in at night and went right past the place. Had to stop, ask, turn around go back. It is not easy to find at night if you have not been there before. Have a wonderful time.

Very true, if you have not been at night, it is easy to miss it. In addition to sign restrictions, they have a restriction on bright lights.

At certain areas it is very dark. The best thing is to watch for is stores such as the Piggly Wiggly and the Shelter Cove Mall, then you know you are close.
