Is the food at Boma and Jiko very different from American food?

Thinking of making dining reservations at Boma and/or Jiko. We are a family of picky eaters and am concerned the food will taste too different for the picky eaters. For those that were faced with the same issue but went ahead and tried it, how was it, did the picky eaters enjoy?

Thanks a bunch :thumbsup2

I thought the food at both Jiko and Boma (at least the majority of the Boma food - some I didn't try) was "normal" enough in taste. I love the food at Jiko - to me its just good, high end, food. I enjoyed the taste of the food at Boma but there is a spice that is used a lot in the food that makes it taste a little bit different and that spice upset my stomach. So while I enjoyed the food, I didn't enjoy how I felt afterward.

There were plenty of items at Boma that one would consider normal or standard fare...prime rib, roast chicken, vegetables, etc. There were also items that were recognizable but perhaps done just a little different or spiced a bit differently. There were, of course, a few items that were really different. But overall, there is so much to choose from that everyone should be able to find plenty to feast on. We, as a family of 5 different eaters, found plenty and loved our evening at Boma. I tried EVERYTHING and loved it.

We did not eat at Jiko. Next time.;)

The atmospheres are very different though. Boma is a typical buffet and can get quite loud. Jiko, our new favorite restaurant at WDW, is a sit down restaurant with "business/casual" attire. We ate a Boma several years ago and haven't been back but not because we didn't like the food. We ate a Jiko on our last trip and the service and the food were wonderful.

We did Boma for breakfast which was fine. Mostly normal breakfast food. We have eaten at Jiko on 2 different trips. It is my DH's fav restaurant. I am very picky & don't like really spicy food, but I loved the dish I got. I ordered the sturgeon that had this delicious tomato butter sauce!!! YUM! Give it a try!

dined at Jiko's on 5/2 and 5/5. Tasted pretty Americanized to me! Most restaurants don't have flatbread (appy) but most have this standard -

did you ever see peanut butter and jelly look so good?

Too busy eating to get pix of the entree but here's one of our appy's - Ahi Tuna (tartare):

and, of course, I did get pix of the desserts which were great too!

I should also add, I had a party of 20 to feed and nixed Boma's b'c of my REALLY picky ADULT eaters. (I was afraid they'd confine themselves to the kids' section of the buffet so I opted for the big bucks and held the party at Jikos.) Not one person complained; not one person left anything on their plates! LOL. I have to tell you, I planned ALL our meals around these carnivores who eat at diners and we did ok - LeCellier, Kona and Jikos. And, they ordered steak every night! LOL

I thought I'd look at Boma's buffet but never got a chance to do it with so much going on.

We ate at Boma, haven't tried Jiko yet. I really liked Boma, but DH, who isn't particularly picky thought it was "too different". :confused3

I am a picky eater...so is hubby.
We both adore Boma and Jiko.
Boma has interesting things to try (like my fav Fu-fu...white potatoes, yams and african spices served like mashed potatoes..yum!!!) and normal american dishes (mac-n-cheese, chicken, salad) if the other things dont pan out for you.
Jiko is my favorite restaurant on the planet!!! They have an African Oak grilled fillet mignon with a 5 cheese (specialty african cheeses of course!) mac-n-cheese with an incredible red wine sauce over it all. Sounds like quite the dish (did to me too!) but trust me...it is to-die-for!!!! I dream about it until I get there again lol.

So dont be afraid to try them. I havent regretted it yet, nor has my picky tummy ;)

we ate there last tues - i loved everything i tried - hubby who is super picky had no problem finding stuff to eat - loved the prime rib - was back for many helpings - said it was some of the best he has ever had!!!

We had that same concern due to our oldest DS being a very picky eater :sad2:. But we finally gave in and tried Boma last September......and let me say we LOVED it....even our oldest DS walked away stuffed ;). The buffet is filled with such a variety that there's something for everyone. The prime rib is awesome :thumbsup2. There are things on the buffet that are different, but for the most part I would say the food is pretty normal as far as taste :).

It's basically just beef, chicken, etc.

You might prefer Boma because then you can get the sauces on the side. Jiko, you can ask for things plain if you want. But they really are very good they way they are.

Thanks a bunch :thumbsup2

With all these positive responses, I think I'll give Boma and Jiko a try ;) I'll be sure to post after we try them :)
