Is the cost of an extended warrenty on my laptop negotiable?

The warranty on my HP laptop will expire soon, and when I called for rates to extend, I was given a very hard sell on 2 year and 3 year plans. I'm guessing these folks are on commission.

Has anyone been able to haggle to lower the cost on a computer service plan/warranty?

How much do they want for the warranty? Will the laptop even be worth is in 2 or 3 years?

In general i skip all of these and self insure.

I don't understand why you need an extended warranty on a laptop. Do a Google search to find other extended warranty options.

I was going to suggest SquareTrade.com but one must buy their warranty within 30 days of purchase.
We just bought an incrdible Dell with touch screen, 1 Terabyte hard drive, great specs for just $399. Normally I wouldn't bother with an extended warranty but since this will be going with ds17 to college in Sept we felt we should. For 2 yrs of coverage, including drops & spills etc, it was just $43 through ST. Just by calling to ask a question they offered to knock 35% off.

For a laptop that's already a year or 2 old, I would put the $ toward a new one.

I think it depends on the nature of the machine. If it's a Black Friday special or something low end like that, then extending a warranty probably doesn't make sense. But if it is a high end laptop, then extending the warranty may make sense.

My company buys pretty high end laptops for most of us who have them. And they take out warranties for them for 3 years. (Unfortunately with my last laptop, the warranty got used 3 times between years 2 and 3!) Once the 3 years warranty is up, then the company replaces them.
