Is Thanksgiving not PC?

I thnk we should just toss all demoninational holidays in favor of one big holiday made just so everyone won't get their knickers in a knot.

To quote Frank Costanza from Seinfeld, "Festivus for the Rest of Us! "

The holiday ornament is a plain aluminum pole, with no decorations or tinsel, because it is too distracting. And after dinner, the wrestling starts.

What's to offend?

That was what my husband said too! That is TOO funny! (At least to me!)

We will start with the listing of grievances! (see other threads on Kerry/Bush) ;)

All of this talk about Thanksgiving really has me thinking. And it had me thinking about the origins of Canadian Thanksgiving, which really is quite the fascinating tale.

The origins of Canadian Thanksgiving are more closely connected to the traditions of Europe than of the United States. Long before Europeans settled in North America, festivals of thanks and celebrations of harvest took place in Europe in the month of October. The very first Thanksgiving celebration in North America took place in Canada when Martin Frobisher, an explorer from England, arrived in Newfoundland in 1578. He wanted to give thanks for his safe arrival to the New World. That means the first Thanksgiving in Canada was celebrated 43 years before the pilgrims landed in Plymouth, Massachusetts!
For a few hundred years, Thanksgiving was celebrated in either late October or early November, before it was declared a national holiday in 1879. It was then, that November 6th was set aside as the official Thanksgiving holiday. But then on January 31, 1957, Canadian Parliament announced that on the second Monday in October, Thanksgiving would be "a day of general thanksgiving to almighty God for the bountiful harvest with which
Harvest Season
Canada has been blessed." Thanksgiving was moved to the second Monday in October because after the World Wars, Remembrance Day (November 11th) and Thanksgiving kept falling in the same week.

Another reason for Canadian Thanksgiving arriving earlier than its American counterpart is that Canada is geographically further north than the United States, causing the Canadian harvest season to arrive earlier than the American harvest season. And since Thanksgiving for Canadians is more about giving thanks for the harvest season than the arrival of pilgrims, it makes sense to celebrate the holiday in October.

So what are the differences between Canadian and American Thanksgiving, other than the date? Not much! Both Canadians and Americans celebrate Thanksgiving with parades, family gatherings, pumpkin pie and a whole lot of turkey!

I'd venture to guess that the Canadians have pretty good beer at their Thanksgiving meal as well - though nothing quite tops a draft of a good ol' American Brewski.

Honestly, there is no real way to be PC. We are a Nation of diversity! What happened to the tolernace and acceptance that this Great Nation was suppose to be based on, though not always practiced? There are always going to be a handful or more of people that are going to be offended by something! That's life! Does that give that handful of minorities the right to dictate what is acceptable for all? I don't think so. Are we going to change our historical documents because someone doesn't like the word "God" being used. I certainly hope not!

I don't begrudge people their right to live and or worship the they want to; but I am certainly not going to let them dictate to me what is right or acceptable to me.

I fear that the way things are going we will be left with no "holidays" at all. All we will have will be the dates on our calendars. It seems that is the only PC thing that will be tolerated by all. That way everyone can be upset! At least until someone can find fault with that too!

Wait a minute... maybe we can't even have the dates on our calendars. Remember AD, BC - oops refers to Christ.

That's what I was saying! It is getting to the point where it is ridiculous! Why can't we just live and let live? What difference should it make what we call a holiday? Really what harm does it do to anyone? It's a word! Call it whatever you want; but let me do the same! A little tolerance, love and compassion would make this world a little better place to live in!

Actually (and maybe I'm tainted and bitter from years of working holidays in retail)there IS no such thing as a 'real holiday' anymore. Holidays are just excuses to have sales or to go out and party and get schnokered. That's why I think except for the so-called 'major holidays' (Christmas,Thanksgiving,Easter.4th of July and New Year's Day)all other holidays (Labor Day, etc) should be gotten rid of entirely. Take them off the calender...nobody would miss them.

I understand where you are coming from, too! I worked retail until dd was born; so I know what it is like having to work those "sales" on a quote unquote holiday! I agree that "holidays"seem to be a thing of the past. However the point I was trying to make on this thread was that there is no way to keep certain or any holidays and still be PC for everyone!

I think am going to start a new thread a see what people really think about our "holidays". Feel free to post on it!
