Is text messaging as big in the US?

In England, text message is probably the main way many people communicate now. I know I personally get through about 700 texts a month (I live away from my friends, bf and family). Even my grandma uses text messages regularly (In fact, we spent the day together recently and she spent most of it texting her friends!)

I wondered if it was as much as much of a phenomenum in America? :grouphug:

Comparing life in CA to life in London, text messaging is MUCH more widely used in the UK. In the US, I would get a text maybe once a week from my best friend; here I receive many every day from various people. I know my boyfriend and I keep in touch much more through texting throughout the day than the phone - when he is at work and I am at lectures its a lot easier to send a quick note and have him respond when he can than interrupt whatever he is doing at work (and the same goes for me at lectures.) Plus he sends "good morning" texts knowing I will just get them when I wake up, as opposed to waking me up with a phone call. :goodvibes

Not quite that big. I think there is a significant antipathy for spelling things out here. ;)

I think it's more popular with kids. I'll send text messages to DH, but he's not real great about returning them, so it doesn't really start a conversation.

Since you text so much, do you get good at using that stupid number pad??? It takes me forever just to type two sentences. :earseek: And no matter how hard I try, I just can't use the texting shorthand that's so popular.

I can text without even looking at the keys, which means I can text whilst doing anything else....its a sad but useful talent!

As for shorthand, I am probably the only person in the world who texts not just in FULL words, but with all the correct punctuation too....I don't know why but I just can't bring myself to use bad grammar!

I've just discovered texting because of a guy I'm seeing. I'm hooked now. I love getting messages from him :)

Okay, quick! Without looking, what letters go with which number keys? :rotfl:

My friends and I never text message. But my little sister (18) and all her friends sends millions of them, I swear.

very big with high school and college students. The problem here is most plans set a limit on text messaging unless you pay alot of money. Alot of the hs kids I know spend big money on their text messaging bills.

I going to admit here that I do not know how to text message.

Me either. My sister was here last summer from CA and sent me a message one day when we were going to the beach and I just called her back. :teeth:

Usually just call people on my cell phone. I find it much easier than trying to type in letters with the stupid number pad..

I've probably sent two text messages in all my life. I don't really see the point--after all, if I have cellphone in hand, and the other person does as well, why wouldn't I just call said person instead of sending a text message? And if the other person is in a place where a call would be considered rude, shouldn't their phone be turned off anyway? :confused3 :rotfl: :rotfl:

I couldn't do text messages anyway--I really hate shorthand, and it taxes the brain trying to figure it all out. :rolleyes1

The only text messages I get are from my friends in the UK. LOL

Most folks are able to receive TXT messages so unobtrusively that they are far superior to trying to carry-on a vocal conversation with someone. Remember, you can set your phone's ringer to off and still receive TXT messages.

Texting is something I LOVE to do, however, my provider says I am limited!

I wish the phone services here would come out with an UNLIMITED text plan, heck, they can keep my calling minutes, give me the texts!!!! :teeth:

I have my yahoo messenger set on mobile once, used that thing for an entire day! THEN I GOT THE BILL! :faint: Why didn't I think of that BEFORE I did something crazy like that? :faint: :faint:

i text all the time... means i can contact my friends without interrupting thrm.. or if i dont' know what time they'll be able to take a call, i'll text...

and i too can text without looking... but only on predictive text!
