Is spelling a lost art?

One of the spelling errors was actually a very easy typo.

But the powers that be, decided that two times by ateacher made it a spelling error. It's nitpicky and childish to point out that stuff as when folks resort to that, they've run out of anythign to contribute to teh conversation.

(Typos left intentionally b/c I'm weird like that on spelling threads.)

They were not typos. It was a small comment. These were words such as "agianst" used more than once, and other very simple words, used more than once by two different posters that were teachers, including the original poster wanting a better "sallary". The teacher was disturbed that their spelling errors were mentioned, pointing out that they were not English teachers. And TWO teachers made the errors. If others in the post had typos, grammar or spelling issues, they were not brought up. We all make typos. It was not done in a way to be disrespectful or nitpicky. They were teachers that were complaining about cuts made and money issues. That was the issue and why it was mentioned. I really don't see a lot of people correcting others on spelling or grammar issues, possibly I don't see those posts.

Grammar tests are a thing of the past-- elementary schools don't have kids diagramming sentences anymore.

There was a thread here about 3 weeks ago about diagramming sentences. I would say that about half the people thought it was a stupid exercise in a grammar/English course. To me, diagramming sentences is just like learning/practicing your multiplication tables in math. No one thinks that is stupid. People who love English and grammar just get no respect!;)

I agre, this speling and grameer thing has gotta stopp. Goode greif what is you're maine languge anywhy?

You's ain't got no reasen to not no the languge, its just cilly.

I've always been a good speller. Do I notice mistakes on signs, message boards, and news crawls? Sure. Sometimes I even get a giggle from it. Do I bother to correct people? No. I understood what they meant, and that's good enough for me. Sometimes my fingers can't keep up with my brain while typing and I make a typo, it happens. Big deal.

But that darned 'leet-speak' drives me bonkers. :crazy2: I always type out my words in full in text messages!

Is your brain ready for this?

Eye halve a spelling chequer
It came with my pea sea
It plainly marques four my revue
Miss steaks eye kin knot sea.

Eye strike a key and type a word
And weight four it two say
Weather eye am wrong oar write
It shows me strait a weigh.

As soon as a mist ache is maid
It nose bee fore two long
And eye can put the error rite
Its rare lea ever wrong.

Eye have run this poem threw it
I am shore your pleased two no
Its letter perfect awl the weigh
My chequer tolled me sew.

(I know - it gives me a headache too! :rotfl:)

For the record: I am an excellent speller, but I get many typos because my computer keys stick. I get a little miffed when I see someone pick at someone's spelling regardless of the reason. Lighten up folks, no one is perfect. (I had to edit myself 4 times because of the keys. It's a post. I shouldn't have to be that picky).
