I heard a rumor once that the reason it could never be re-released was due to a contract problem with one of the vocal performers.

Thanks for that link that was interesting. I have never seen the movie(we've never even been on Splash Mountain since my DD9 did not like water rides, but we should be riding this year since she says she's over it) and nobody could ever give me a clear picture of what the problem is/was. As a black person, I can understand the complaints. It's like they're saying the movie was trying to make light of a horrible situation. But I believe that's true of lots of Disney classics. Look at the step-mother/step-daughter relationships. I think in race relations, intention is 95% of it. I don't think Disney's intention was to say that they think slavery was funny or enteraining. Rather than seeing a "watered-down" version, I'd rather see the real story, but maybe if they wanted to put a little message on there saying that this is the story the way it was written in whenever it was written and that it's intention was to share a story passed down for X amonut of years/generations and that it's NOT intended to be a documentation of what slavery was like. We have the new Universal movie and it's cute, but not great. BTW, whats a laserdisc?

In the Mid-80s Laserdiscs were the ultimate in high fidelity (think of them as a precursor to DVDs). The systems were *very* expensive and the laserdiscs were more expensive than VHS tapes, so they never caught on with Joe Consumer.
