Splash Mountain is our favorite ride. We love it! We've never seen Song of the South. Since Splash is based on SotS, we'd love to see it.

I remember reading that it's been put in the vault because it contains racist material. Is it in the vault forever? Will there be a re-make of the movie someday?

Thanks!

Hopefully, but highly doubtful. Bob Iger stated, I believe at the share holder meeting, that he viewed the movie and personally decided it will never be released on DVD. I guess they feel there is too many stereotypes in it. I bought a copy of the movie from Ebay. Honestly, I do not know what the big deal is. Movies now-a-days are ore racist than this one is.. And now Universal is releasing The Adventures of Brer Rabbit.. I looked up the history of brer Rabbit and it is a story passed down through African folklore... Maybe African-American folklore.. Either way, this DVD should be celebrated but kept in some vault locked away.

Thanks for the information. I wonder how the Universal version will stack up to the original Disney movie. I guess I'll never know, since I haven't seen it (and unless it comes out on dvd, I probably won't see it). I'd like to hear the story of Brer Rabbit. I'll have to check the library and see if I can find a folklore book.

Kelly, pick up a copy on Ebay.... That is where I got mine. Honestly, I cannot see Universal's stacking up to Disney's version at all... But, all they are doing is retelling a story...

Maybe this is just the kick in the pants Disney needed...Universal making a movie of Uncle Remus stories. Disney could trot it out of the vault and beat them to it. As opposed to their newest movie about animals escaping from a NYC zoo (now where did I see that before?)

I too believe I read that Iger said at the latest shareholder meeting that he would not release the film. I have never seen it, but I have yet to meet someone who did that at least didn't admit to some hesitation over how it would play in our current society

dbm I bought a copy from Ebay.. And honestly, I do not see the big deal.. I think this more or less celebrates African-American folklore.. This movie in no way degrades them....

For those who bought DVDs on eBay, how was the quality? That is my favorite movie and I must have it. I have "Zippity Do Da" as my ringtone for my phone. :thumbsup2

they are usually copies of the Song of the South Laserdisc, so they are in no way close to what a real DVD copy would look like. Unfortunately they are also technically illegal to buy.

There is a nice section of SotS on the second disc of the Alice in Wonderland Masterpiece Collection DVD, in the "One Hour in Wonderland" program. It shows the full Zip-a-dee-Doo-Dah number and one of the Br'er Rabbit stories. The video quality is quite nice there too.

I read that Scott (?) McQueen the former head of restoration at Disney did a full restoration of the film a few years ago, so it would be ready for DVD release as soon as someone has enough cajones to pull the trigger on it.

You'd think they'd just quietly put it out there, as a limited edition or as part of a Treasures package, just to undercut Universal and the Bootleggers.

I, too, don't see a big problem with it - it seems like most people are not even upset by the stereotypical voices, etc, of the cartoons, but more the fact that the Freedmen are happy and singing, when, really, their lives stunk and they should have been depressed and miserable.

If you look at the way Brer Fox, Rabbit, and Bear behave/talk, the characters don't seem to be any more offensive/stereotypical than the dinner table scenes in the Eddie Murphy "Nutty Professor" movies, and if I recall, all the characters were voice by African Americans, so it's not like it was a white man charicaturing a black man's voice.

Most other movies that are that age or older are celebrated for the innovative film making that they were and use the controversial nature of their content as a jumping off point for discussions on how far we have come. While Song of the South in no way compares to "Birth of a Nation" in terms of racially inflamatory content, "Nation" is widely available (and shown every year during black history month on my campus) while the only way to see Song of the South is by buying a bootleg with Chinese subtitles from Hong Kong. SotS and Birth of a Nation can both be considered ground breaking cinemating achievements, from a pure technical film making stand point. They should both be available for the public to see.

Snopes has a pretty good summary of the criticism of the movie:

http://www.snopes.com/disney/films/sots.htm

Supporters of the film read into the sketchy backstory in the script that the father, John, is a rabble-rousing newspaperman in Atlanta, and the family has had to move out to the Grandmother's farm to stay out of the way of the trouble John is stirring up with the (racist) establishment in Atlanta. See the script:

Well I guess the point really is that no matter if we agree or disagree with the assessment of Iger and those before him, this film has been kept off the shelves for a while now and it will take a new CEO to change that. Considering the films content, that seems like a 50/50 at best

Unfortunately dbm, my fellow New Jersian, I believe you are right. As much as we wish this DVD will be released, Iger's words were not very encouraging... However, if this new DVD by Universal about Br'er Rabbit does well, Disney may look at the lost revenue and deicide to finally release the movie.. Maybe they can add a disclaimer before the movie and on the DVD cover...

But more likely they will release a "new and improved" watered-down version. Which, come to think of it, may not be all that bad.

Has anyone read the unabridged stories of Uncle Remus? I HIGHLY recommend them to anyone that loves tall tales and folk-telling. The stories are in full southern dialect and there is always a lesson to be learned. Check out http://www.uncleremus.com/ if you are interested. And no I'm not a spokesperson just someone who loves these stories!!

I don't know how they can water it down?? Didn't they already change tar baby to a glue character??

Considering that it's one of the best films Walt Disney ever made...

That it takes place AFTER slavery ended...

That the black folks in the film are portrayed as wise while the white folks are portrayed as fairly stupid...

There's no reason the film shouldn't be released.

It's really a shame.

Fortunately I purchased the Japanese laser disc a few years ago and treasure it highly.

When we were in WDW over the holydays I noticed they were selling some of those books in the Splash Mountain store where you exit the ride.
