someone has to tell me how WDW did this.

We are currently at WDW and having a blast. Yesterday we were at MK and my son and I split off from the rest of the family to ride space mountain (fun!). We went through the standby lane and had about a 20 minute wait. When we left, we didn't stop to look at our photo, just not interested.

Last night I was looking at our photo pass on the my Disney ap...and it was there! Twice (I'm guessing one for me and one for my son). So weird. I'm really trying to figure out how on earth they did that. Facial recognition? Do they track everyone at all times? Gps device implanted in me? I'm going to need a tin foil hat if someone can't explain this to me.

I thought it must be magic band related...but then I thought it's so hard to scan it "just right" to get into places it couldn't possibly be tracking me.

Disney is quite good at what they do. It's super cool to think of how they manage things behind the scenes. Nothing is by accident.

They started doing that via the MB so that those who have the MM can have it or try to get you to buy the MM. I love WDW because of the RFID. Makes DL seem even sadder without it.

Magic Bands are the best! I only wish they worked at home, too.

There are "passive" and "active" scanners from what I understand. The passive ones are the ones you scan for FP+ and you need to be right next to them for them work. The active scanners are pulling your information from a more broad spectrum so you only need to be within a certain proximity.

They have been doing this on most rides these days. Last year 7DMT was the first time I witnessed it. This year there were many more.

...kind of makes you wonder where else the active scanners are monitoring your movements, no? :scared:

As PP have said it is indeed the active RFID of the magicbands.

The way they know how to make sure you are you is that the scanner which writes the photo to your photopass/memory maker account that is linked to your MDE and thus linked to your MB is just slightly past the camera. So it snaps a photos and in miliseconds starts the chain to read the band access your MDE account and write the photo on your PP/MM account. There was a ton of after park testing done by CMs for each ride that has it. They had a good flow of groups who would just cycle through the same ride over and over again across a night or two. After each ride they reported if the photo was put on their account and if the photo was indeed their party. My close friends did it and said some of them were fun (7DMT) and some made them sick to their stomach (ToT) since they rode so much haha.

I wonder if it actually scans at the camera, or does it just keep track of your place in line??

Big brother is watching. ;)

Those using mb have high frequency rfid. Those who choose using a card ticket, have a low frequency rfid chip.

I was wondering about this, too, since DH just came back and we had ride photos in our MDE account that we didn't have FP+ for or scan our magic bands at the end of the ride. He went on EE once as single rider, and his pic was there.

"I always feel like somebody's watching MEEeeee"...Remember that little ditty from the 80's?

It's the same technology used in EZ Pass for your car. That's why they give you the little plastic bag to put your EZ Pass module into if you're not planning on using it. Because if you just take it down out of the window and even stick it in the glovebox or center console, the scanner can still pick it up. I know this because it's happened to me.

More scary is that it isn't always accurate. Our last trip we had some ride photos of totally random people that weren't us! It happened on 7DMT and there was one other ride, but I can't remember which one. Ours were there too, so it didn't miss us. I assume the other people must have been on the same ride cycle?

I actually like this feature a lot. When you go on a DCL cruise, only the children going to the kids club get magic bands. They scan in and they scan out. When you go to pick up your child, the CM's can tell you EXACTLY which room your child is in in the club. Love it.
