I LOVE the name Skylar, spelled exactly like that. There are so many Jessica's, Katherine's, Elizabeth's, Amanda's, Emily's and Sarah's in the world, that Skylar is a nice change. Good Choice! :)

I think it's a lovely name, but would have trouble with the Schuyler spelling. I think you'd have people always mispronouncing it as School-er or Shoe-ler. (I research family history & that spelling, pronounced Shoe-ler shows up a number of times.)

Yeah, we aren't considering the spelling Schuyler for this very reason. I live in Mississippi and, though this state has come a long way over the years, a lot of people still don't spell well. (Sorry if I offend anyone who may be from MS...just telling it like it is.) There would be some who would no doubt have trouble pronouncing it. A lot of people around her cannot say my name b/c of the spelling. And a lot of those who can say it always spell it Tosha. My mom's name is Myra and people always pronounce it Mirror. My nephew's name is Channing and people call him Chandler. So, I am sure they would come up with some weird interpretation for Schuyler. But that's the only reason I would not spell it that way.

Every Skylar I ever knew was a boy, but I know a woman named Michael, and a woman named Kevin ( both were Jewish, so I don't know whether that is a religious thing or not ).

I know a girl Skyler. I like it. My DD's name is Kendall. Most Kendall's are boys. I don't care. I like it. Go with what you like.

My boys are Sage and Cole, so not exactly the norm names. :)

I have a son Sage too!

There are many names that could be used for both genders:

Sage
Robin
Jamie
Skylar
Hunter
Taylor
Morgan

funny thing is that I told him someone else had a poll going for the name Meadow for a girl...now he has decided that he loves the name Meadow and would like to name a girl Meadow!

Sorry, but Meadow just screams "Sopranos fan" to me.

Congratulations and good luck with whatever you decide! I like the name Skylar but since I'm inundated with watching Fairly Oddparents and one of the characters is Chip Skylar...I would have a hard time with it but then again....our 1 year old is named Luke and he already has endured "Luke I am your father" statements (i.e. Star Wars! But that's OK because that is part of where it came from! ROFL!!!!!!!! It's just kind of a joke! I have such a hard time finding boy names I like and he was my 3rd boy - so it was *really* rough finding a name both DH & I could agree upon!)

Honestly, no matter what you name your child, there will always be unanticipated issues. I have 4 kids and none of them have gotten unscathed without some name issue (either with it being somewhat common - although I tried to avoid it, didn't quite work out that way with 1 child or pronounciation or spelling since it could be boy/girl name but different spelling). Most of these weren't anticipated when the kids got named. LOL! I named my DD Carolyn (who up until she was actually born, was possibly going to be Heather Renee) and you would not believe the trouble people have with pronouncing her name....it's a simple as you can get - and she is always being called CaroLINE. Of course, Caroline is the more popular version that came along right after her. It never occurred to me that I would actually have to deal with pronounciation issues when I named her.

I voted "yes". I think it's a nice girl's name, and you can call her "Sky" for short :)

My DSs names are Craig and Robby. Craig is just Craig, no nickname obviously. Robby's full name is Robert but we don't like the name "Bob", so he has been "Robby" or "Rob" since Day 1. We almost named him Robby right on his birth certificate but decided to go with Robert in case he wanted a more formal sounding name later in life (for business reasons, maybe). Also, even if we named him Robby legally, everyone would still assume his real name was Robert. Robby likes being called either Robby, Rob, or even Robert, but NEVER call him Bob. lol

I was seriously contemplating naming Robby "Harrison". Not after Harrison Ford (although that's a good person to be named after. lol), but after George Harrison of the Beatles. The ONLY reason that Robby is not named Harrison is because it didn't sound good with my last name (at the time). I am remarried and my last name is now Brown, I think Harrison Brown is a good name, but I am not having anymore kids, so there goes that idea. lol

I know a few Skylars and they are all girls. Not even that unusual a name in my area.

Funny some of you mention Kendell - I also know a few Kendells, and it's also only a girl's name around here. Never ever heard it for a boy.

Hmmm...that's interesting. DH and I have never even seen the Sopranos so I never even thought of that. Good to know. Of course I don't know many people that watch the Sopranos around here either. If we did consider the name Meadow I would have to do a local poll to see how many people would associate it w/that.

I have never heard of any Skylars at all in my area. It's funny how different areas have such a different trend in names. And I was thinking the same thing about Kendall. I know quite a few Kendalls around here that are girls, but no boys. Thanks everyone for all of the info. Keep it coming for as long as you want. I am open to everything.

Skylar is what my cousin named her baby. :D

I  it.

p.s. yes the baby is a girl.

I'm not really into these new names so don't like Skylar for a girl or a boy..........if you add a K on the end......you get Skylark.....(a fool/idiot who gets a kick out of being a total jerk)........I do however like SKye for girl.....I knew a little girl once who had the name of Storm.....she was such a pretty little thing.......but Storm???

There are some really pretty unusual girls & boys names out there, without going to the extreme...........good luck & do keep in mind that your child is stuck with this name for the rest of their lives & also take into account what other kids will call her. I feel sorry for kids with way out names, as other kids can be so cruel.

Good luck...it's not my choice...........I have my boys & they are happy with their names.........one is traditional & one is newish (when he was born it had been around a few years).....now it's very popular.

I like the name Katharine. I don't like Elizabeth, but I do like Eliza. DH doesn't like either. But the funny thing is that I told him someone else had a poll going for the name Meadow for a girl...now he has decided that he loves the name Meadow and would like to name a girl Meadow! He either likes names that are very common like Ashley (which I like better on a boy) or something unusual like Skylar. We are still trying to find the middle ground. I like Meadow but not sure I would want to use it. I do like Skylar but still debating that too. That's why I love the DISers. I can get all kinds of points of view.

I went to school w/a girl named Abby and I do not have fond thoughts of the name b/c of this. Plus, my dad's dog's name is Abigail and they call her Abby for short. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Getting away from Meadow........a nice name for a girl is Melody...........another I like is Nerida. I don't mind unusual names, just not 20th century kind of ones, nor unisex names. But, it's totally your choice.......you asked for opinions & you got it :D

My cousin's son's name is Skylar.:p Actually it's Dillon Skylar and he goes by Dillon.

I think it's cute for a girl. My neighbors had a daughter named Skyler.
