I like it. I might like it better as a middle name with a more traditional first name, for the sake of sounding professional and classical in her thirties/fourties. But, it's a lovely name.

I don't care for it...too trendy for me. But you gotta go with YOUR gut!

..but I like the spelling Schuyler better if it's for a girl!

If I saw that name written down with the above spelling, I wouldn't have the first clue as to how to pronounce it. One thing I know I will avoid when I have kids is to give them a name that has a funky spelling...the last thing they need is to go through life constantly correcting people, getting mail with the wrong spelling, etc. Sure, it may be unique and different, but seems like more of a burden than anything else.

To the op, I think I'm leaning toward not liking the name Skylar. But that's just my opinion, and I don't greatly dislike it, it just wouldn't be my first choice.

If you like unusual names that are not too modern, but unusual just the same.......here is one....

Auriel Pronounced like Ariel the little mermaid, but instead of Air it is Oar -re-l It is French & means Angelic & Golden

Getting away from Meadow........a nice name for a girl is Melody...........

Oh, then my aunt would love you! Her name is Melody. But DH has a hard time saying that for some reason. He always wants to call her Melanie. He jokes all of the time that it would have been easier if she were just named Melanie. He has never met her, btw...that is part of the reason he can never remember her name! :D

That is what makes it so hard trying to find a name hey? One you don't associate with anyone else......it's like Anglea.......I used to like the name until I met one who was a gold digger & just walked on everyone. Now I can't stand the name.

Good luck with your search..............might be easier if it's a boy :D At least that way you more or less have your names picked. :D

The only Skylar I know is a girl.

I like it - it reminds me of the character on All My Children! (who moved to a different soap btw!!)

I googled Skylar + All My Children...

http://www.babynames.com/V5/index.php?content=n_soap2

:flower1:

I believe the characters full name is Skye - not Skylar. She went from All My Children to GH. I think there is a Skylar on a different soap, though.

Another girl who had that name was Vince Neil's daughter.

Anyway - For Skylar - I am mixed. The majority of the Skylar/Skylers that I am aware of are girls. But, before I had heard of it as a "people name", I had only known of it as a pets name. I even had a male blue parakeet whose name was Skyler.

I must admit - when I saw Schuyler it took me a little bit to sound it out. My first thoughts were Shoe-y-ler. Actually, I still can't see how you get Skylar out of it! LOL
Someone mentioned Kendall. In my area, to my knowledge, there are no male Kendalls. Kendall is a girls name.

I cant see Schuyler as Skylar either. I want to say Shula, like the restuarant, LOL!

I had to come back to this thread because the other day at DS's soccer class there was another mother there with her new(days old) baby. It was a girl named Kendall. Then in our local paper last night someone had taken out a Happy Birthday ad to a Skyler and there was a picture of a little girl in it, so Im assuming thats a girl Skyler. Personally I like Skylar better than Skyler, but its not much of a difference.

Also, what I learned with my DS, is do not listen to others opinions. Go with what you want for your child. I came so close to not naming DS Colton, which I love, because of a lot of negative feedback during my pregnancy. Now that hes almost 5 I know I would have been kicking myself if I had gone with Dylan, my second choice.

I know a few Skylar's & they are girls.

I'm not fond of the name Melody because my name is Melanie & growing up I constantly got called Melody!!!

Have only heard one of my DD's names one other time - her name is Ashlyn. I heard a woman in the grocery store years ago call a baby that. Also, DD said a boy on her co-ed soccer team (a team she was on when she was about 7) told her a few years ago that they named his baby sister Ashlyn because her parents liked the name so much after they heard us call her name.

My other DD's are Kelsey & Marissa. I also loved the name Taylor (unisex name).

A friend just named her daughter Ryan. I thought that was odd because I have a nephew named Ryan, but the more I think of it the more I like it for a girl - although I would have spelled it with 2 "n's" so it would be Ryann - just because!

I absolutely love the name!!! I know 2 girls (one teen, one toddler) with the name!! Beautiful!!

There is a pretty young woman at work with gorgeous long red hair and her name is MOLLY-KATE. I love that name and she looks like a Molly Kate too.

So I just had a thought and it has nothing to do with Skylar. Your screename is Tasha+Scott.

Why not name her Sascha as a combo of both your names?

On the Skylar side, I like it as a girls name but the only Skylars I have known are boys. Sissy Spacek's daughter is Schuyler. Perhaps you could pair it with an ultra-feminine middle name, that seems to soften the unisex blow for some people.

I like it, but then my DDs are named Remy and Holland so I don't stick to normal names. I think Skylar with an a is more feminine than with an e (does that make sense LOL).

A little OT, I once met someone who had a son named Holland. I wonder if they call him Holly too...hmmm... ;)

Honestly, I cringe when I hear it :scared: and think "that poor child"

But that's just my opinion. It's not my child ;)

I like it, My DD Shayla was to be Skyler McKenna...I really wish now we would have stuck with it.

Well, personally I like the name Shayla. It was another name we thought about but I like Skylar a little bit better. So I think your DD has a beautiful name. I also like the name Remy and Ashlyn. I guess I don't think the way other people think. I am not looking at these names b/c they are trendy, etc. I just like different names than the ones I grew up hearing my whole life. Half of the names I like I have liked for 10 years or so...before they were even considered a trend. I thank everyone for their opinions and suggestions and we will continue to look into other names but right now I believe we are going to go w/Skylar if it is a girl and either Hunter or Dakota if it is a boy unless we hear something else that we just absolutely love. And CamColt I appreciate your post and you will be happy to know that while I value other people's opinions I will not let it sway me from what I really like. This was more of a curiosity thread than anything else. I appreciate everyone's input but I will go with my gut. Thanks again everyone! :D
