is sci- fi a must do?

We took 4 kids, ages 9, 6, 6, and 3. They all loved the Sci-Fi and counted it as one of their favorites. (The Sci-Fi and T-Rex were there favorites). We're doing it again in Nov.

This is definetly not a must-do for us.:snooty: We tried it for the first time on our last trip because of all of the raves and must-do's listed on the DIS! We were very underwhelmed; the atmosphere was cute but our kids didn't really understand all of the 50's movie trailers. We also sat in a car which meant that it was hard to talk to our kids in the front seat. The food was average at best, but the milkshakes were good.

If you want to do a TS in DHS, 50's PTC is definetly the way to go. After doing Sci-Fi, we all agreed that we would be returning to 50's PTC on our next trip--a must-do for us. We loved the comfort food there and all of our meals were very tasty.:thumbsup2

I was very surprised to find out that most of the pp in this thread agreed with my opinion. Most of the reviews of Sci-Fi say how great it is, which is why we decided to try it. Different strokes for different folks.:goodvibes

I have always liked Sci-Fi....so it was a must do for our last trip. However, we won't do it again. We were there 2 weeks ago....we waited 35 min for our table ( we had an ADR). Our waiter was in a REALLY bad mood to start with, so that didn't help. We didn't mind waiting at all, but it was nice when we were finally seated.

So we get seated and our waiter comes over and says "oh good, more people". :scared1: Seriously ?? It was kind of downhill from there. He rushed us through everything. We no sooner got our appetizers then our meal showed up. (there was hardly any room at all for the plates) There was another couple "in our car" in the front seat. You could tell they weren't really happy with it all either. They had a baby and the infant seat was in the aisle between the cars. ( not much you could do about that). Well, he just kept making snide comments about their baby constantly being in the way. ( yeah, that silly baby should have moved when she saw HIM coming !!):rotfl: They finished up and left before we were starting our lunch and their dirty dishes and high chair stayed put the entire time we were there. No one bussed the dirty dishes. :confused3 (did I mention that it was not full at all....there were empty cars and they didn't seem to have a shortage of servers)

Long story short, when he brought our check I gave him our KTTW card so he'd put it on the dining plan. As he's walking away, he says ( quite loudly) "I guess I'll be putting my tip on your room charge". I'm sorry, WHAT?????? I called him back and said " oh, to answer your question, I'LL be handling your tip so I'd appreciate it if you left that up to me". UGH.

I know it was just the server, and I want to still love it, but next time we'll do 50's PT. We've heard great things about it, so it might be time for a change. It's obvious our waiter needs some time without customers anyway! :rolleyes1

The movies scared our 8-year-old. It's now 7 years later. He's never asked to go back.

I think you should do it at least once. We ate at Sci fi for the first time this year. Our kids really wanted to eat in a car, and my husband and i thought it was a cool concept also. It was fun and the food was ok. I wouldnt do it again. But i definitly think everyone should try it once.

Lunch time. it's worth doing! decent cheeseburgers, onion rings and milkshakes!

Scared him when he was one, and now -- at 8 -- he won't go back? Or scared him at 8 and now, at 15, he won't go back?

Scared him at 8. He has not expressed a desire to go back in the intervening years. But, on the other hand, I haven't asked him about going back either.

We were just there two weeks ago. My kids loved it! I had the bacon cheeseburger and it was really, really good.

I liked the fact that it was so quiet in there. It was a very relaxing lunch after the huge crowds that were at HS that day.

I sat in a seat with my 3 & 6 year old and had plenty of room, my dh & 8 year old sat in front of us.

It goes to show -- you can just never tell what will spook a kid!

We also had a moody server at Sci-Fi. She was an older woman and consistently tried to talk us out of things. We were on the DxDP and wanted the famous shakes we kept hearing about. When we ordered shakes as our drinks, she went on and on about how big they were and we should really order them for dessert, not a drink..., and when the kids got milkshakes, that really sent her over the top "Will they be sharing, because the shakes are that big, they could split one." Oh, and then we got apps on top of that:rotfl:, she sighed loudly.

But, we didn't let her spoil our meal. We loved sitting in the car and watching the old movie trailers. My kids couldn't believe how bad special effects used to be :lmao:.

I loved going to Sci-Fi when I was younger so this is a must do for us with out upcoming trip. The food is okay but it's the atmosphere that makes it worthwhile. My daughter is 3 and loves to go to the movies so she is going to love eating in a "car" while at the movies! And the waitstaff is on roller skates which kids will love. Does anyone know if they still serve complimentary popcorn?

I LOVE Sci-Fi, for lunch at least. It is one of the coolest restaurant atmospheres in all of Disney. The shakes are wonderful and so is the food, if you stick with a burger and fries. I've never tried anything else, but knew that was the safe choice. DF got the ribs and wasn't overly enthused, but I had warned him to get a burger. He agreed with me though that the atmosphere and the shakes are top notch.

Another lunchtime Sci-Fi lover! Great burgers, onion rings and shakes! And a great way to get out of the heat for a bit.
Dinner, not so much, lunch, absolutely!

wow thanks guys----confused still....all we could get was 4 which is dinner...i will see what other options r available....
oh quick question if we get HS around noon would we be ready to leave by 4??? or is more of an all dayer?

ok so if u had a choice at HS betw that-- prime time, mama melrose, hollywood and vine which would u pick?
haha i am asking for it now:rotfl:

With the kids I would go with 50's Prime Time or Hollywood & Vine. Of course Hollywood & Vine will have the Character's and is a Buffet and Prime Time Cafe is just a menu.

Depending on how your days is going, Prime Time has great Bloody Mary's!:goodvibes

thanks this would be after 4-- no characters it states....i am sure whichever we pick will be fine....i just wasnt sold on breaking up the kids in rows then eating in dark....etc....i bet they would crack up at primetime! esp when my 7 yr old gets told to eat his veggies by somebody other than me:)

for some reason my gut is telling me to cancel and not eat in HS at all for TS...it does look cool my kids are 4 5 7......but i am one over and i dont want to pay OOP...
if u guys tell me it a must do i will! will they think the movies r cool? will they recognize any of them? our ressies are 4:00
eating in the dark with 3 little ones...just not sold on that idea.....
help?:confused3

It may scare them at that age. It is not a don't miss anyway IMO. If we eat at HS at all we do lunch at 50's PT or just stop at the snack area outside TOT...
