Is Princess Eilonwy (Black Cauldron) the first modern Disney Princess?

For the last five years, we have watched Black Cauldron on Christmas Eve. What always strikes me is how strong of a character Princess Eilonwy is. She is allowed to be more independent and courageous than prior princesses and reminds me more of the recent princess characters than the classic ones. Is she the first of the modern princess characters or am I missing one?

I think that is probably accurate. This was already starting in the 80's when the female characters could also be the heroes. It makes sense that The Black Cauldron would depict that.
