Is Physical Therapy a good career choice?

These are some great replies. I'm glad to hear that it is a solid career choice. I'm 20 hours away from getting my Bachelors in Biology. I'm also 32 and a mother of two kids so choosing the right path immediately is important to me. I don't have alot of time to jump around (ha).

Best of luck to you! I am in a very similar situation. I am also a 32 year old mother of two. I have my BA in Psychology and 15 graduate credits in Applied Behavior Analysis. I have been out of school for about 4 years since I found out I was pregnant with my son. Now he is 3 and starting pre-school. So it is time for me to get the ball rolling and get back in school. Now I am reconsidering my field and looking strongly at OT. I like how you put it, we definitely don't have a lot of time to jump around;) I hope it all works out for you. Keep us posted.

Wow, that is news to me. I have never heard of an AT not being able to do PT, what exactly do AT's do in your state? In my AT coursework a good majority of the coursework and testing consisted of PT and rehabbing. In fact, in the definition of what an AT does is to evaluate, treat and rehab injuries. None of the sports medicine clinics or hospitals I know of that use AT's, which is all of them, have to treat AT's as unlicensed techs and most, if not all AT's would be very upset with this classification because they ARE certified and have a 4 year degree to do what they do.

Did MN pass the expansion of AT scope of practice? I know that there was a bill introduced some time in the past.

Just realized almost 3 years later that I'm the one who started an AT vs PT debate. I'm in Ohio where I'm employed by a clinic. I do 10 hrs/wk in the clinic & the rest outreach at a local college. In the clinic, I am able to eval & treat workers comp cases without the supervision of a PT. There are some insurances out there, be it few & far between anymore, that will reimburse for AT services in the clinic. In those cases, I treat patients who have been eval'd by a PT & a PT signs off on my notes.

I'm still pushing for anyone who is considering PT as a career to at least start with an AT major, esp since March in National Athletic Training Month. I still love my career choice - even considering my baby is 3 months old! PM me with any questions about AT!
